MaryEllen & William’s Trip to Rome

Mary Ellen reached out to me while she was already in the early stages of planning a trip to Rome, and it quickly became the perfect opportunity for her entire family to join her. Rather than hopping from city to city, they wanted to fully experience one destination without the added stress of constant travel.

With multiple dietary needs in the family, gluten-free and dairy-free for Mary Ellen, gluten-free with mushroom and lettuce allergies for her husband, and gluten-free for both kids, it was essential that this trip feel enjoyable and manageable, not overwhelming.

Rome proved to be an excellent choice. Italy has a strong awareness of celiac disease and food allergies, and Rome is home to many restaurants that truly understand how to safely accommodate special diets. This made it possible for the family to relax, enjoy the incredible food and culture, and focus on making memories together, without constantly worrying about what was safe to eat.

Why did you choose your vacation destination?

My grandparents were from Italy, so we always wanted to go. I had another event in Italy, and the timing worked out so that the whole family could go. We wanted to spend the time exploring Rome.

What were your favorite activities on your honeymoon?

This is so hard to say! We had many amazing tours: Pompeii, the Vatican, the Colosseum, Papal Audience... We can't pick a favorite!

What was your most memorable moment on vacation?

Once again, this is hard to pick. Seeing the Pope, the Sistine Chapel, seeing snow on Mt Vesuvius, sitting around the table with the entire family for the wine tasting.

What were some of your favorite gluten-free meals?

All of the food was amazing! My son had the "best pizza of my life" with pepperoni, honey, and spicy olive oil.

Other favorites: risotto with salmon, a hamburger!, fried artichoke, a gluten-free cornetto that tasted just like the regular version!

What was your experience using Gluten-free Vacations?

They made it so easy! Everything they arranged worked out wonderfully! I never worried about our meals, even though my son has celiac disease and my husband has multiple food allergies.

We had an amazing time! Everything worked out so well - from being picked up and dropped off at the airport, to our day trip to Pompeii, and all of our tours! We loved the hotel too - everything from the spacious rooms (which I didn’t expect in Europe) to the breakfast at the rooftop cafe overlooking the city! The food was amazing, and it didn’t take long to realize that eating gluten-free in Rome was actually easier than eating gluten free at home, but I never would have even tried it if I hadn’t found you and Gluten-free Vacations (especially given our other food restrictions)!

We will definitely choose Gluten-free Vacations for our future trips!
