Why I Love All-Inclusive Resorts for Gluten-Free Travelers

If you're gluten-free or living with celiac disease, you already know that travel comes with an extra layer of planning. Where will I eat? Will they understand cross-contact? What happens if I get sick two days into my trip? After years of helping gluten-free clients plan vacations, I can say this without hesitation: all-inclusive resorts are one of the best ways to travel safely, deliciously, and without the constant mental math of "can I eat this?"

For anyone who isn't familiar, an all-inclusive resort is exactly what it sounds like: your room, meals, snacks, drinks, and often activities and entertainment are all covered in one upfront price. No bill at the end of every meal, no adding things up as you go.

If you haven't stayed at an all-inclusive resort, or if the last one you visited was sometime in the 90s, you might still be picturing a big buffet with lukewarm, low-quality food. I get it, that reputation exists for a reason. But the resorts I work with couldn't be further from that. We're talking real culinary programs, ร  la carte restaurants, and some resorts even have Michelin-star chefs behind the menu.

I've personally visited over 70 resorts across the Caribbean and Mexico, and I'll be honest with you: not every all-inclusive resort can actually provide safe gluten-free options or fully understand cross-contact. Honestly, most don't. But the resorts I work with? They get it. And no, that doesn't mean you'll be eating salmon and rice for seven days straight (you wouldn't accept that at home, so why accept it on vacation?).

Some of the best all-inclusives I work with are in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana, Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, St. Lucia, Curacao, St. Vincent, and Grenada.

At the resorts I recommend, you can go on an actual vacation. We're talking gluten-free pancakes, pizza, burgers, fries (yes, with dedicated fryers), tacos, and pastries, plus plenty of fine dining options for when you want to dress up for a nice dinner. Whether you're looking for an adults-only escape or a family-friendly resort, there's a safe, satisfying option out there for you.

Here's why I keep coming back to my favorite all-inclusive resorts for my gluten-free and celiac clients, and for myself.

1. Multiple Restaurants, One Team

One of the biggest challenges with gluten-free travel is having to explain your dietary restrictions over and over again, to a different restaurant, manager, and chef at every single meal. It's exhausting, and honestly, it's where things tend to fall through the cracks.

At the all-inclusive resorts I work with, the entire property works as one team. You communicate your restrictions once to the resort's food and beverage team, and from there, everyone is on the same page, the front desk, the restaurant hosts, the servers, and the kitchens all across property. Your needs are flagged system-wide, so every restaurant already knows before you sit down.

Even better, I have relationships with the key staff at every resort I work with. Before you even arrive, I'm communicating your needs directly to the people who matter, so your dietary information isn't just sitting in a reservation note, it's already in the hands of a team that knows exactly what to do with it.

2. Training You Can Count On

The best all-inclusive resorts I work with take staff training seriously, and just as importantly, that training is consistent. It's not one especially attentive server who happens to "get it," it's built into how the entire restaurant operates.

Here's what that typically looks like in practice:

  • The host or hostess asks if anyone in your group has allergies the moment you check in for your table

  • Your server asks again once you're seated, even though you already mentioned it at the door

  • Chefs use designated prep areas and separate utensils to avoid cross-contact with gluten

My favorite resorts take it a step further with a dedicated Culinary or Food Concierge, someone whose entire job is helping guests with dietary restrictions and allergies navigate the resort with confidence. When that level of attention is baked into daily operations, you stop bracing yourself at every meal.

Meeting with the Culinary Concierge team at one of my favorite resorts.

3. Dedicated Space for Safe Preparation

Some of the best gluten-free protocols I've seen happen behind the scenes, in ways guests never even notice. One of my favorite resorts has a restaurant with a wood-fired grill for baking pizza. When I ordered a gluten-free pizza there, I asked how it was prepared, and the answer surprised me: they actually make it at the restaurant next door, which has a dedicated oven just for gluten-free pizza, and then bring it over.

Other guests never know the difference. But that extra step is exactly the kind of behind-the-scenes care that reduces cross-contact risk and lets you actually relax and enjoy your meal instead of worrying about it.

4. The Food Is Unlimited

Didn't love your dinner? Order something else. Want a completely different meal? Walk to another restaurant on property and start over. You never have to worry about going hungry, and there's genuinely something for everyone.

As someone who needs to try as much gluten-free food as possible during a resort stay (it's a tough job, I know), I take full advantage of this. I'm the person having appetizers at one restaurant, dinner at another, and dessert at a third. I still have a little PTSD from the night I made it to five restaurants, but that's a story for another day.

Yes, I know which resorts have gluten-free churros. ;-)

5. It's ALL Included

This might be my favorite part. Not worrying about the bill actually makes a vacation feel like a vacation. You're not tracking how much you're spending on gluten-free substitutions, specialty items, or that extra dessert you probably didn't need but definitely wanted.

All-inclusive resorts are especially great for:

  • Honeymooners: after paying for a wedding, the last thing you want is another stack of bills waiting for you on your honeymoon. Book it once, and the celebrating is already covered.

  • Families: kids can try all kinds of food, and you're not upset about the cost of a meal they barely touched

  • Groups: no splitting bills, and no awkwardness when someone orders lobster and you're stuck with a salad

Everyone eats what they want, you eat what's safe for you, and nobody has to think twice about the tab.

6. Zero Planning Required

At home, or even on a typical trip, gluten-free travel often means waking up and immediately opening Find Me Gluten Free to map out every meal for the day (we LOVE that app, by the way). At the resorts I work with, you don't need to do any of that.

You simply walk into whichever restaurant you're in the mood for that day and trust that you'll be taken care of. No scouting menus in advance. No backup plan in case a place doesn't work out. Just show up and eat.

And if you book your trip through me, I take it one step further: I'll give you a list of gluten-free favorites at your specific resort before you even leave home, so you know exactly which "must-have" dishes to look for and never miss out on the good stuff.

How Do I Know a Resort Is Actually Good for Gluten-Free Travelers?

This is a fair question, and one I take seriously, because I'm not just repeating what a resort's website claims. Since 2021, I've been visiting resorts specifically to see how they handle gluten-free dining, and here's how I actually vet a property before I ever recommend it to a client:

I go there myself. When visiting a resort matters, it really matters, so I talk directly with management about their gluten-free process, sit down for a meal to see how the servers and kitchen staff are trained in real time, and taste the food myself.

I do the research. That means digging through reviews, reaching out to the resort directly, and following up on anything that seems inconsistent, rather than taking a single glowing review at face value.

I lean on my network. I work with a group of fellow travel advisors who are also frequently out visiting resorts. We help each other out: I pass along information that's useful for their clients, and they do the same for mine. Many of us travel together, so they know exactly what I look for, the questions I ask, and what actually matters to a gluten-free traveler. That means I'm not just relying on my own visits, I have eyes on properties all the time.

So, What's the Best All-Inclusive Resort for Gluten-free Travelers?

This is the question I get asked more than any other, and the honest answer is: it depends. A resort one client loves might be the wrong fit for someone else entirely, it's not just about the gluten-free menu, it's about matching the whole vacation to the person taking it.

Before I put together a custom proposal for a client, I ask a handful of questions to make sure I'm recommending the right resort, not just a safe one:

  • Are you looking for adults-only or family-friendly?

  • If adults-only, are you looking for a quiet, romantic escape or something more lively?

  • If family-friendly, what are the ages of the kids, and what are they interested in?

  • What's your timeframe? If you're traveling in September or October (hurricane season), I'll point you toward destinations outside the hurricane belt.

  • What airport are you departing from? Some destinations have much better flight options than others depending on where you're flying from.

  • What amenities matter most to you: spa, fine dining, entertainment?

  • Do you prefer to preplan your meals or go with the flow? This one matters more than people expect. Some resorts require guests with dietary restrictions to preorder a meal, or even a full day, in advance, while others let you walk up and order right alongside your group when you arrive at the restaurant. Depending on your travel style, one of these will feel like a relief and the other will feel like a hassle, so it's worth knowing which fits you before we pick a resort.

  • What excursions are you interested in?

  • Are there any other needs I should know about, like requiring a resort that's handicap accessible?

  • What's your budget? Sometimes it's worth staying 5 nights at a more expensive resort that truly understands gluten-free dining rather than 7 nights at a cheaper, mediocre one.

Once I know the answers, I can narrow down the (very long) list of resorts to the handful that actually fit your trip, resorts where the gluten-free program is excellent and the vacation itself is exactly what you're looking for.

What It's Like to Work With Me

When you work with me, the process is simple. You'll fill out a short questionnaire that walks through all the details of what you're looking for, the questions above and more. From there, I'll put together a proposal with three to five resorts (sometimes more) that fit your needs, so you're comparing real options instead of starting your search from scratch.

To get started, all I require is a one-time $100 planning fee, that's it. This fee covers the time I spend researching destination options and building a customized proposal around what you're looking for.

  • There are no additional fees after that.

  • On top of the resort itself, I can also help arrange travel insurance, airfare, transportation, and excursions, so the entire trip is taken care of, not just where you're staying.

  • Your final itinerary and travel documents include my gluten-free tips and recommendations, along with all your reservation details, so your trip runs smoothly from start to finish.

  • Plus, my resort rates match, and are often better than, what you'd get booking direct, with the added benefit of personalized service throughout.

The Bottom Line

Gluten-free travel doesn't have to mean anxious meals and constant vigilance. With the right all-inclusive resort, communication happens once, staff training is consistent, kitchens take cross-contact seriously, and the food never runs out, all without an extra charge in sight. That combination is exactly why I recommend all-inclusives to so many of my gluten-free and celiac clients, and why I keep choosing them for myself.

If you're planning a gluten-free getaway and want help finding a resort that actually delivers on all of this, I'd love to help you plan it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all-inclusive resorts safe for people with celiac disease? Some are, but not all. Many all-inclusive resorts still don't fully understand cross-contact or have consistent training across their restaurants. That's why I only recommend resorts I've personally vetted, ones with dedicated prep areas, trained staff, and a track record of keeping gluten-free guests safe.

Will I be stuck eating the same bland meals all week? Not at the resorts I work with. Think gluten-free pizza, burgers, fries from dedicated fryers, tacos, pastries, and fine dining, not just salmon and steamed vegetables every night.

Do I need to research restaurants before I go? No. Once you're at the resort, you can walk into any restaurant on property and trust that the staff already knows how to accommodate you. If you book through me, I'll also send you a list of gluten-free favorites at your specific resort ahead of time.

Which destinations have the best gluten-free all-inclusive resorts? Some of my favorites are in Cancun, Riviera Maya, Punta Cana, Jamaica, Turks & Caicos, St. Lucia, Curacao, St. Vincent, and Grenada. However, youโ€™ll find that Punta Cana, Cancun & Riviera Maya, and Jamaica tend to have the most all-inclusive resort options.

Does booking through a travel advisor cost more than booking direct? No. My resort pricing matches, and is often lower, than booking direct, and I can also help arrange travel insurance, airfare, transportation, and excursions.

How do you know which resorts are actually good for gluten-free travelers? I've been visiting resorts specifically to evaluate their gluten-free programs since 2021. I go in person, talk with management, eat the food myself, and I also rely on a network of fellow travel advisors who help me keep tabs on properties.

When is the best time of year to go to an all-inclusive resort? It depends on the destination and what you're looking for. In the Caribbean and Mexico, December through April tends to bring the most reliable weather, though it's also peak season, so expect higher prices and bigger crowds. If you're looking for a better deal, late spring and early summer often bring lower rates with still-good weather. I generally steer clients away from September and October in hurricane-prone areas, and if you're traveling during that window, I'll point you toward destinations outside the hurricane belt instead.

My Top 5 Favorite Gluten-Free Treats at Disney World

Disney World Gluten-free Travel Agency

Some people go to Disney for the rides and charactersโ€ฆ but if youโ€™re gluten-free, you know the food is part of the magic too. One of the reasons I love visiting Walt Disney World is that itโ€™s one of the few places where you donโ€™t feel like youโ€™re missing out, especially when it comes to treats.

Disney goes above and beyond to offer gluten-free options, and that definitely includes desserts and snacks. These are the five treats I look forward to every single trip:

1. Beignets (Yes, Gluten-Free!)

Gluten-Free Beignets at Scat Catโ€™s Club Cafรฉ

If youโ€™ve ever been to New Orleans, you know how special a good beignet is - and Disney can make them gluten-free and delicious. Make sure you let them know you need gluten-free.

You can find them at Scat Catโ€™s Club Cafรฉ in Port Orleans Resort, and theyโ€™re made in a dedicated fryer, which is a huge win for those with celiac disease.

Even better? Theyโ€™re also vegan, dairy-free, and egg-free, making them a great option for multiple dietary needs. Donโ€™t skip the dipping saucesโ€”salted caramel, strawberry, and chicory chocolate ganache take them to the next level.

2. Churros

Gluten-free Churros at Nomad Lounge

Gluten-free churros at Disney? Yes, please. Make sure they know you need gluten-free!

You can find them at Nomad Lounge in Animal Kingdom, where theyโ€™re served with delicious dipping sauces like vanilla cream and strawberry guava.

Theyโ€™re also available at Three Bridges Bar & Grill at Villa del Lago, typically paired with a rich chocolate dipping sauce. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, everything a churro should be.

3. Dole Whip

Dole Whip

This iconic Disney treat is a must-have and naturally gluten-free.

Dole Whip is a dairy-free (when not swirled with ice cream) soft-serve-style treat made primarily from fruit. Pineapple is the classic flavor, but youโ€™ll often find seasonal and specialty variations throughout the parks.

You can grab it at locations like:

  • Aloha Isle

  • Sunshine Tree Terrace

  • Pineapple Lanai

  • Swirls on the Water

  • Refreshment Outpost

Itโ€™s refreshing, allergy-friendly, and perfect on a hot Florida day.

4. Mickey Ice Cream Bars

Mickey Ice Cream Bar

Sometimes simple is best and it doesnโ€™t get more classic than a Mickey-shaped ice cream bar.

Mickey Ice Cream Bar features creamy vanilla ice cream coated in a chocolate shell, all shaped like Mickey Mouse. Theyโ€™re individually wrapped and widely available at snack carts, kiosks, and resort shops throughout Disney World.

Itโ€™s a nostalgic treat that just feels like Disney.

5. Frozen Lemonade

When the Florida heat hits, frozen lemonade is one of the most refreshing gluten-free options you can find.

Youโ€™ll spot it at carts and quick service locations across all four parks, including:

  • Flame Tree Barbecue

  • Harambe Fruit Market

  • Pizzafari

  • Westward Ho Refreshments

  • Min and Bill's Dockside Diner

Itโ€™s tart, icy, and exactly what you need between rides.

Final Thoughts

One of the most magical things about Disney is that gluten-free guests donโ€™t have to sit on the sidelines when it comes to food. From beignets to churros to iconic Disney snacks, there are so many safe and delicious options to enjoy.

As always, make sure to ask questions and advocate for yourselfโ€”but also take the time to enjoy these moments. Because being able to grab a treat just like everyone else? Thatโ€™s a little bit of Disney magic in itself.

Are Cruise Drink Packages Worth the Money?

Cruise Drink Packages - Gluten-free travel

If you've ever priced out a cruise, you've hit that moment at checkout: "Add the Deluxe Beverage Package for $89 a day?" It's tempting to click yes and stop thinking about it. But is it actually a good deal, or just an easy way to overspend?

Short answer: it depends entirely on how you drink. Below is how to figure out which camp you're in.

Non-Alcoholic Drink Packages

Most cruise lines include basic beverages like:

  • Water

  • Tea

  • Lemonade

  • Coffee

  • Juices

However, most cruise lines do not include soda, specialty coffee, energy drinks, bottled water, or mocktails. If you drink a lot of soda or enjoy specialty coffee throughout the day, a non-alcoholic drink package may absolutely be worth it.

Alcoholic Drink Packages

Most alcoholic beverage packages follow a similar formula, even though pricing and specific brands vary by cruise line. You typically get

  • Unlimited cocktails, beer, and wine by the glass up to a certain per-drink price cap (often somewhere between $12 and $20)

  • Bottled and fountain soda

  • Specialty coffees and teas

  • Smoothies

  • Bottled water

  • Premium juices

Do the Math Before You Buy

At the end of the day, this really comes down to simple math.

Mixed drinks on many cruise lines are often around $15โ€“$18 each after gratuities. To break even on a package priced around $80โ€“$90/day, you typically need to be drinking somewhere in the 5โ€“7 drink per day range, and that includes specialty coffee, soda, and bottled water if those aren't otherwise free on your ship.

How to Run the Numbers:

  1. Estimate your daily drink count. Morning latte, poolside drink, one at lunch, two at dinner, a nightcap: does that actually sound like your trip? Multiply that estimate by the average drink price, then compare the total to the package's daily cost.

  2. Look at your itinerary. Port-heavy cruises mean fewer hours actually onboard to drink, while sea-day-heavy cruises tip the math in the package's favor. Keep in mind that private islands are usually covered, but regular ports of call are not.

  3. Check the price cap. Most packages set a per-drink ceiling (often $12 to $20). Order something above that price, and you'll pay the difference out of pocket.

For some travelers, the package saves money. For others, especially light or occasional drinkers, paying individually makes much more sense.

Thereโ€™s no right or wrong answer - it simply depends on your travel style and budget.

How to Purchase

The purchase process isn't identical across cruise lines, and a couple of these lines don't even sell what you'd expect. Here's how it works on four popular ones:

Royal Caribbean
Buy through the Cruise Planner (online or in the app) before sailing, which is also where the best discounts show up. You can also call Royal Caribbean directly to order over the phone, or wait and buy onboard at any bar or a promo table set up near the gangway on embarkation day. Pre-cruise orders can be canceled for a full refund up to 2 days before sailing.

Celebrity Cruises
Same idea as Royal Caribbean, different portal. Purchase through Celebrity's Cruise Planner online or via the Celebrity app before departure, or buy onboard on day one. Celebrity also sells an "All Included" fare that bundles a Classic Drink Package with Wi-Fi right into your cabin price, so check whether that's cheaper than adding the package separately.

Virgin Voyages
Virgin Voyages skips the traditional package model. Instead, you pre-purchase a "Bar Tab," a chunk of onboard drink credit, in set amounts ($200, $300, $500, $750, or $1,000), and Virgin adds a bonus on top (for example, a $300 Bar Tab becomes $350 to spend). You can buy it through the Virgin Voyages app, your online Sailor account, or through us as your travel agent before sailing.

Disney Cruise Line

There's no unlimited drink package to purchase at all. Disney sells discounted beer and wine bundles (like a "buy 5, get 1 free" beer package) and lets you pay per drink at the bar, which works out fine for most families since Disney includes more free non-alcoholic drinks (soda, coffee, juice) in the fare than most lines. If you want a beer or wine bundle, those can be ordered online in advance or set up at the bar once onboard.

Our Favorite Drink Strategy

Enjoying some wine and gluten-free pasta on Royal Caribbeanโ€™s Wonder of the Seas

Here's the approach we tell people about all the time: skip the package, do the quick math on what it would have cost, and use that number as your unofficial ceiling for the cruise.

Say a 4-night sailing's drink package runs $89 per person, per day, that's $356 total. Ask yourself: can I have a good time for $356 or less? The "strategy" is simple: have fun, order what you want, and try to land under that number. No committing to a flat daily rate, no pressure to hit a break-even number of drinks. You can track your spending in real time through the cruise line's app.

It works because it flips the math: instead of asking "how many drinks do I need to make this package worth it," you're asking "can I enjoy myself for less than what they'd charge me for unlimited." For light-to-moderate drinkers, the answer is almost always yes.

Other Ways to Save on Onboard Drinks

Bring Your Own Wine and Soda
Most cruise lines let you bring one or two bottles of wine or champagne per adult onboard at embarkation, plus a limited amount of soda or other non-alcoholic beverages, though exact limits vary by line, so check the specifics before you pack. Keep in mind that many lines charge a corkage fee if you open wine in a dining venue or bar; drinking it in your cabin is usually free.

Watch for Daily Drink Specials
Many ships run daily drink specials or happy hour pricing that can cut the cost of individual drinks significantly. This is a solid option if you want a few cocktails during your cruise without paying for a full beverage package upfront.

How We Help

We're a travel agency built specifically around gluten-free travelers, and cruises are one of the trips where that focus pays off the most. When you book a cruise through us, you get our guide to gluten-free alcoholic drinks, a straightforward reference covering which spirits, wines, and common cocktails are safe, which ones to avoid, and how to order confidently at any bar onboard.

We also help you think through the drink package question itself, based on your actual itinerary and your actual drinking habits, not a one-size-fits-all upsell, so you're not gambling $500+ per person on a package you're not sure you'll enjoy safely.

The bottom line: a cruise drink package can be a great deal or a bad one, and the answer depends on your habits, your itinerary, and, if you're gluten-free, knowing exactly what's safe to order before you ever step up to the bar. That's exactly the kind of planning we specialize in.

Top Ten Tips for Eating Gluten-Free at Disney World

We love Walt Disney World because we can eat almost anything there gluten-freeโ€”from pizza and fries (in dedicated fryers) to treats like churros and beignetsโ€ฆ the list truly goes on and on. Planning a trip when you are gluten-free doesnโ€™t have to be stressful; in fact, it can be one of the most enjoyable places to travel with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. Disney has created systems and training that make dining safer and more accessible than almost anywhere else.

That said, a little planning (and a few insider tips) can make your experience even smoother. Here are my top 10 tips for eating gluten-free at Disney World:

1. Work with a Gluten-Free Disney Travel Advisor

Planning a gluten-free trip is differentโ€”and it helps to have someone who truly understands it. As someone with celiac disease who loves Disney, I only recommend places I personally trust. A knowledgeable travel advisor can guide you toward the safest and best dining options, saving you time and stress.

2. Stay on Disney Property

Staying at a Disney Resort makes gluten-free dining much easier. Youโ€™ll have:

  • Access to safe dining options at your resort

  • Easy transportation to parks and restaurants

  • Less need to search for outside food options

It simplifies your trip and reduces stress around meals.

3. Eat on Disney Property/Where to find Gluten-Free Options

Disney-owned restaurants follow strict allergy protocols, which is a huge advantage. While there are great options at Disney Springs, not all restaurants there are Disney-operated, so procedures may vary. Always double-check and ask questions when dining off Disney-owned property.

In sit-down & quick service restaurants, ask for the gluten-free menu. When looking at menus on the My Disney Experience app, make sure you scroll down past the kidsโ€™ meals. There you will find the โ€œGluten/Wheat Allergy Friendlyโ€ options.

4. Make Advanced Dining Reservations Early

Dining reservations open 60 days in advance at 6:00 AM, and the most allergy-friendly restaurants fill up fast. Booking early ensures you have access to the best table service experiences where chefs can accommodate gluten-free needs.

Download the Disney Mobile App:

5. Use Mobile Ordering Whenever Possible

Mobile ordering through the My Disney Experience app is a game-changer. You can:

  • Review allergy-friendly menus in advance

  • Customize your order

  • Avoid long lines

Ordering 15โ€“20 minutes ahead helps ensure your food is ready when you need itโ€”especially since allergy meals take a bit longer to prepare.

See our blog The Ultimate Guide to Eating Gluten-free at Disney World.

6. Look for the Allergy Indicators

When your food arrives, check for:

  • An allergy pick/marker

  • A different-colored tray (often purple)

These are part of Disneyโ€™s safety system and signal that your meal was handled as an allergy order.

7. Be Cautious with Buffets

Even though Disney does an excellent job with allergies, buffets can be risky due to cross-contact. Whenever possible:

  • Ask if a chef can prepare your food separately in the kitchen

  • Request a plated meal instead of serving yourself

Many Disney buffets are happy to accommodate thisโ€”just ask!

8. Always Speak to a Cast Member

Never assume your dietary needs are automatically understood. Whether youโ€™re at quick service or table service:

  • Inform a Cast Member about your gluten-free needs

  • Confirm with your server

  • Ask questions if anything seems unclear

Communication is key to staying safe.

9. Advocate for Yourself

This is the most important tip. Even in a place as accommodating as Disney:

  • Double-check your meals

  • Ask how food is prepared

  • Trust your instincts

If something doesnโ€™t feel right, donโ€™t eat it. Disney Cast Members are there to help and want you to feel safe.

10. Make Memories

At the end of the day, this trip is about more than food. Take the pictures, enjoy the rides, and soak in the magic. One of the best parts about Disney is that you can feel included in the dining experienceโ€”and thatโ€™s something truly special.

Final Thought

Disney World sets the standard for gluten-free travel, but no place is ever 100% risk-free. Stay aware, ask questions, and advocate for yourselfโ€”but also allow yourself to enjoy the experience.

Because you deserve a vacation that feels just as magical as it tastes.

The Ultimate Guide to Eating Gluten-Free at Disney World

Walt Disney World is one of the best destinations for gluten-free and allergy-friendly dining. Disney has a multi-tiered training system in place for special diets, ensuring that guests can dine with confidence. Cast Members are trained to recognize allergy requests and are instructed to escalate those orders to specially trained staff or chefs to ensure safety. Multiple procedures are in place to help minimize risk and handle gluten-free dining properly.

There are two main types of dining at Disney World: quick service and table service.

Download the Disney Mobile App:

Quick Service

Quick service meals allow you to browse menus and order directly through the My Disney Experience app, making it one of the easiest ways to dine gluten-free.

To order:

  1. Log in to your My Disney Experience app

  2. Select โ€œOrder Foodโ€ from the main menu

  3. Choose your restaurant

  4. Click โ€œView Menuโ€ and scroll all the way down past drinks

  5. Look for the โ€œGluten/Wheat Allergy-Friendlyโ€ section

Step 1: Login to your account

Step 2: Choose โ€œOrder Foodโ€

Step 3: Choose your restaurant

Step 4: Click View Menu

Step 5: Review โ€œGluten/Wheat Allergy-Friendlyโ€ menu

Now choose your arrival window & add items from the allergy-friendly section at the bottom of the list.

Once youโ€™ve selected your meal:

  • Choose your arrival window

  • Add items from the allergy-friendly section to your order

Gluten-free meals do take a bit longer to prepare, so ordering 15โ€“20 minutes in advance tends to work best. When your food is ready, it will typically be served on a different-colored tray (often purple) as part of Disneyโ€™s allergy safety protocol.

If you prefer to order in person, simply ask a Cast Member for an allergen menu. You can place your entire orderโ€”both regular and gluten-freeโ€”at the same time. Non-allergy meals will usually come out quickly, while gluten-free items may take a little longer. You may receive a pager or notification when your food is ready, and there is often a separate pickup area for allergy-friendly meals.

One of the best parts? Disney makes it possible for gluten-free guests to enjoy foods that are often hard to find safelyโ€”like chicken tenders, fries, burgers, and even pizza.

Favorite Quick Service Locations:

  • Pinocchio Village Haus (Magic Kingdom)

  • Pecos Bill Tall Tale Inn & Cafรฉ (Magic Kingdom)

  • ABC Commissary (Hollywood Studios)

  • Flame Tree Barbecue (Animal Kingdom)

  • Gasparilla Island Grill (Grand Floridian)

  • Capt. Cookโ€™s (Polynesian Village Resort)

Table Service

Disney also offers incredible table service dining experiences, many of which are very accommodating to gluten-free guests.

Reservations are highly recommended and can be made 60 days in advance at 6:00 AM. This is especially important for popular restaurants.

When dining:

  • Notify a Cast Member at check-in about your gluten-free needs

  • Remind your server and request a gluten-free menu

  • Donโ€™t hesitate to ask questionsโ€”advocating for yourself is key

When your meal is served, it should include an allergy marker (pick). If it does not, always confirm with your server before eating.

Favorite Table Service Restaurants:

  • Liberty Tree Tavern (Magic Kingdom)

  • Biergarten Restaurant (EPCOT)

  • Chef Mickeyโ€™s (Contemporary Resort)

  • Coral Reef Restaurant (EPCOT)

  • Garden Grill (EPCOT)

  • Jungle Navigation Co. LTD Skipper Canteen (Magic Kingdom)

  • Kona Cafรฉ (Polynesian Village Resort)

  • Whispering Canyon Cafรฉ (Wilderness Lodge)

  • 50โ€™s Prime Time Cafรฉ (Hollywood Studios)

Snack Carts & Kiosks

All snack carts throughout Disney World have an allergy binder available. Just ask a Cast Member, and theyโ€™ll let you review ingredients to find a safe option.

Final Thoughts

Disney World truly stands out as one of the easiest places to eat gluten-free. Their systems, training, and wide variety of options make it possible to enjoy meals that often feel out of reach elsewhere.

That said, no environment is ever 100% risk-free. Always advocate for yourself, ask questions, and trust your instincts when it comes to your health and safety.

Why Disney Is a Gluten-Free Paradise

Where food worries fade and families can simply have fun.

For many people who must eat gluten-free, travel can feel stressful before it even begins. Questions about cross-contact, limited menu options, and the fear of getting sick often overshadow the excitement of vacation planning. But Disney does something different; it turns dining into an experience.

In fact, for gluten-free travelers, Disney can feel like a true paradise.

From thoughtful food preparation to endless entertainment and inclusive experiences, Disney creates an environment where families can focus less on restrictions and more on making memories together.

And there are more than 25+ resorts to choose from! Check out How to Choose the Best Disney Resort for You.

Family Fun Without Food Stress

One of the biggest challenges for families managing celiac disease or gluten intolerance is balancing safety with spontaneity. Theme parks are typically filled with quick snacks, shared kitchens, and unclear ingredients, but Disney approaches dining differently.

At Disney, allergy-friendly meals are not an afterthought. Restaurants are prepared, trained, and accustomed to accommodating special dietary needs. Many locations offer dedicated allergy menus, and chefs are often available to discuss preparation methods directly.

That means families can do what vacations are meant for:

  • enjoy rides without worrying about the next safe meal

  • grab snacks between attractions

  • sit down together and order confidently

Instead of planning every bite days in advance, families can relax and enjoy the day as it unfolds.

The Magic of Feeling โ€œNormalโ€

Anyone living gluten-free knows the emotional side of dining can be just as challenging as the physical one. Being the person who always has to ask extra questions, skip treats, or bring separate food can make vacations feel isolating, especially for kids and teens.

Disney changes that experience.

Gluten-free guests can order Mickey waffles at breakfast, enjoy themed desserts, eat popcorn in the parks, and participate in dining experiences alongside everyone else. Gluten-free meals are not just substitutions or afterthoughts.

For many families, this is the first time their child, or even an adult, truly feels included at every meal.

And that feeling of normalcy? Itโ€™s powerful.

Our Favorite Gluten-Free Foods at Disney

One of the biggest surprises at Disney is not just that food is safe, itโ€™s that itโ€™s also delicious. Instead of settling for limited choices, we found ourselves excited about what we could eat.

Here are some of our favorite gluten-free finds:

Table-Service Favorites

  • Liberty Tree Tavern - Magic Kingdom

  • Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen - Magic Kingdom

  • Biergarten - Epcot

  • Tusker House - Animal Kingdom

  • The best they all haveโ€ฆ gluten-free dinner rolls

These restaurants have great food, and the chef will come out to your table if you have any questions.

Quick-Service Wins

Perfect for park days when you donโ€™t want to slow down.

Disney has:

  • dedicated allergy menus

  • safe fries chicken fingers or burgers

  • mobile ordering experiences

Some of my favorites:

  • safe chicken tenders or fries

  • gluten-free pizza

  • lots of gluten-free kidsโ€™ meals to choose from

Just a few of my favorite meals!

Snacks That Made Disney Feel Magical

Everyone loves snacks!

Some of my favorite gluten-free snacks:

  • Dole Whip

  • Popcorn

  • Mickeyโ€™s Premium Ice Cream Bar

  • Churros

  • Beignets

  • โ€œMy child could order chicken fingers and fries gluten-free, just like everyone elseโ€ฆโ€

  • โ€œThey had gluten-free desserts that tasted amazing.โ€

So Many Options โ€” Not Just One Safe Choice

A common travel frustration is finding one safe restaurant and eating there repeatedly. Disney stands out because gluten-free options exist across the entire destination.

Guests can find:

  • quick-service meals for busy park days

  • sit-down restaurants with chef consultations

  • themed dining experiences

  • character meals

  • specialty snacks and treats

Instead of settling, travelers get variety, something that can feel incredibly freeing after years of limited choices.

Confidence Creates Better Memories

When food feels safe, everything else becomes more enjoyable. Parents relax. Kids focus on rides and experiences instead of restrictions. Teens can explore independently with more confidence, knowing safe options are readily available.

Disneyโ€™s systems, staff training, and allergy awareness remove much of the uncertainty that gluten-free travelers face elsewhere. The result is a vacation where the focus shifts back to what truly matters: laughter, adventure, and shared experiences.

More Than a Vacation

For someone who must eat gluten-free, Disney isnโ€™t just another destination. Itโ€™s a place where accessibility meets joy, where careful planning happens behind the scenes so guests can simply enjoy the magic.

And perhaps most importantly, it proves something many gluten-free travelers need to experience firsthand:

Living gluten-free doesnโ€™t have to limit adventure.

Sometimes, it just takes the right destination to remind you that travel โ€” and dining can still feel inclusive and fun.

Eating Gluten-Free in Italy: How the AIC Makes it Possible

When you think of Italy, what comes to mind? Pizza, pasta, and endless delicious breadโ€ฆ But what if you need to eat gluten-free? For travelers with celiac disease, Italy might seem intimidating, but thanks to the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC), eating safely is much more achievable than you might think.

What is the AIC?

The AIC, or Italian Coeliac Association, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with celiac disease. They provide education, resources, and advocacy to ensure that those who need gluten-free food can access it safely.

Educating Restaurants and Servers

The AIC works closely with restaurants, cafes, and even food producers to educate staff on cross-contact risks, gluten-free ingredients, and proper preparation methods. They also maintain a list of certified gluten-free restaurants so that you can dine confidently.

The AIC App: Dining Made Easy

For travelers, the AIC app is a valuable tool when eating gluten-free in Italy. It lists over 4,000 certified gluten-free restaurants throughout the country, including reviews from celiac diners, and offers practical guidance for dining out safely. This makes navigating Italy far less stressful for those avoiding gluten.

Tourists can purchase temporary access to the AIC app for 15 days for โ‚ฌ3.99 (about $4โ€“$5 USD), making it an affordable and valuable tool for short-term travel. Restaurants listed in the app are carefully vetted and must demonstrate strict procedures to prevent cross-contact, ensuring meals are truly safe for people with celiac disease.

The app is also easy to use and incredibly helpful on the go. You can search for gluten-free restaurants by city, scan barcodes to confirm whether packaged foods are gluten-free, and check common ingredients to make sure they meet gluten-free standards. With these features, the AIC app takes much of the guesswork out of eating gluten-free in Italy.

Download the AIC Mobile App:

Italian Legislation: Protecting People with Celiac Disease

Italy has some of the most progressive laws for celiac support in the world:

  • Schools provide safe gluten-free meals for children with celiac disease.

  • Children are screened early to identify celiac disease and prevent complications.

  • The government provides financial support to help cover the higher cost of gluten-free foods, making it more accessible for families.

Thanks to these measures, Italians with celiac disease and travelers visiting Italy can enjoy meals with confidence. Gluten-free dining is not only possible, but itโ€™s also protected and supported at multiple levels.

Yes! You can eat pizza, pasta, and all of your favorites in Italy!!

Traveling Gluten-Free in Italy

Between the AIC certified restaurants, the AIC Mobile app, and government support, traveling and eating gluten-free in Italy is much less stressful than you may have first thought. With a little planning, you can enjoy authentic Italian food safely, pizza, pasta, and more!

Pro Tip: Always check the AIC Mobile app before visiting a restaurant, and donโ€™t hesitate to ask staff about cross-contact practices. Even in Italy, where gluten-free is common, your safety comes first.

How to Choose the Best Disney Resort for You

Disneyโ€™s Wilderness Lodge

Disney has over 25 resort options to choose from. There is truly something for everyone! So how do you decide which one is right for you? There are several important questions to answer before deciding.

What makes a Disney Resort the Right Fit for you?

Answer these questions to help you decide.

  • What is your budget?

  • Do you prefer luxury and relaxation or immersive Disney theming?

  • Do you want to be close to the parks?

  • What type of dining options do you want at the resort (mostly quick service or table service too)?

  • Are you traveling with children, as a couple, or with a larger group?

  • Will you spend most of your time in the parks or at the resort?

These answers will help narrow down your resort category and the specific resort that will suit you best.

What Are the Disney Resort Categories?

Disney resorts are divided into four categories, each offering a different balance of price, amenities, and theming.

  1. Value Resorts - Budget-Friendly and Fun

  2. Moderate Resorts - Comfort Without the cost of a deluxe resort

  3. Deluxe Resorts - Luxury, Location, and Amenities

  4. Deluxe Villas - Space and Home-Like Comforts

Value Resorts

Value resorts are ideal if you want to stay on Disney property at the lowest possible price while still enjoying Disney theming as well as transportation to the parks.

Best for:

  • First-time visitors

  • Families on a budget

  • Guests who plan to spend most of their time in the parks

What to expect:

  • Bold Disney theming

  • Quick-service food courts

  • Bus transportation to all parks

Popular options include Disneyโ€™s Pop Century Resort and Disneyโ€™s Art of Animation Resort, which also offer family suites.

  • Lots of dining options for all tastes.

  • Great for short getaways (3โ€“4 nights) with high-value entertainment and activities.

  • Mix of high-energy activities and lounges for quiet time

Moderate Resorts

Moderate resorts offer larger rooms, better pools, and additional dining options while remaining more affordable than Deluxe resorts.

Best for:

  • Families who want more space

  • Guests who enjoy scenic surroundings and quieter environments

What to expect:

It is import to think about how much time you will actually spend at your resort, as paying more may not be necessary if you plan to be in the parks all day. Balance theme, comfort, and convenience, especially if you are traveling with children. Finally, review dining options at your resort, as some restaurants are destinations on their own.

Finding the Best Disney World Resort for You

There is no single best Disney World resort for everyone, but there is a best resort for your travel style, budget, and priorities. By understanding the differences between resort categories and focusing on what matters most to you, you can choose a home base that enhances your entire Disney vacation.

Working with a travel advisor takes the guesswork out of planning your trip. Weโ€™ve visited most of the resorts we recommend, and with more than 25 to choose from, we can help you find the one thatโ€™s just right for you, so you can focus on relaxing, making memories, and enjoying every moment.

Gluten-free Translation Cards: Eat Safe While Traveling

Traveling abroad can be a challenging experience for those who have dietary or allergy restrictions. Eating out, ordering food, or picking up groceries can be a stressful experience when you're in a new country!

To help make this process easier, I recommend having translation cards while traveling.

What are translation cards?

Translation cards are small, laminated cards that are the same size as a credit card, that provide documentation on any dietary or allergy restrictions that you have. You can have these cards translated into the language of the country you plan on traveling to. So the card will be English on one side and the foreign language on the other side.

Traveling to another country with dietary restrictions can be disheartening for those who don't speak the local language. And so, these handy translation cards help ensure that servers are aware of any particular limitations and can accommodate them appropriately.

I donโ€™t leave home without my gluten-free translation card. It came in handy during my last trip to Mexico while visiting Playa del Carmen.

What is included on the translation cards?

There is plenty of helpful information on these cards that you can share with your server or restaurant staff. Using celiac disease as an example, cards will list foods that contain gluten like bread, pasta, or sauce. There is also a note on cross-contact, providing a warning that eating foods with cross-contact can make you very ill.

For travelers with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, translation cards can be a lifesaver! You can request a custom translation card too for purchase if you have multiple allergies and require a card to explain them at the restaurant.

Purchase Cards from Equal Eats

Equal Eats offers translation cards for individuals with dietary restrictions. Equal Eats was founded by Kyle Dine after traveling throughout Europe. He has multiple food allergies and is dedicated to helping other eat safer while traveling.

Whether it's a peanut allergy, celiac disease or a diabetic diet, Equal Eats provides cards in 50 different languages! All cards are professional translated and custom cards are available too.

Tips for purchasing translation cards

  • If you have multiple food allergies, make sure they are all included in your order so everything will be listed on your translation card.

  • Order your cards ahead of time so you can be sure that they will be delivered to you before you travel. I prefer the printed cards just in case my server needs to share my card with the chef. If you do purchase the digital version, make sure you have it on your phone and print a copy too.

  • To safeguard against the possibility of losing your card, ensure that you have at least two copies of it (one on hand and another stored in your hotel room should you lose your card).

Build Your Own Gluten-Free Emergency Kit for Travel

When you live with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, the goal of any trip is simple: enjoy the destination, not spend the day recovering from accidental gluten exposure. But even with careful planning, cross-contact can happen. And when it does, it can derail a vacation in a hurry.

While thereโ€™s no magic โ€œquick fix,โ€ having your own Gluten-Free Emergency Kit can make a world of difference. After years of traveling with celiac disease, Iโ€™ve learned what helps me recover faster, stay hydrated, and feel safe enough to get back to sightseeing.

Hereโ€™s what I always pack, and why you may want to build a kit of your own.

Why You Need a Gluten-Free Emergency Kit

Getting glutened away from home is stressful. Youโ€™re not in your own home, and you are probably dealing with a packed itinerary.

Your emergency kit becomes a small but mighty tool that helps you:

  • Ease symptoms

  • Stay hydrated

  • Avoid panic

  • Support your digestion

  • Recover well enough to salvage part of your trip

Whatโ€™s Inside My Gluten-Free Emergency Kit

Every traveler is different, but these are the items that consistently help me when I get glutened. Use this list as a starting point to create a kit tailored to your body and travel style.

1. Activated Charcoal
If I suspect Iโ€™ve been glutened, my first step is to take two activated charcoal capsules. They can help bind irritants in your GI system and can provide some relief. (Always talk to your healthcare provider before using charcoal, especially with medications.)

2. Plenty of Water
Hydration is essential. Gluten exposure often comes with inflammation, bloating, diarrhea and/or nausea. Water helps your body recover and process everything more efficiently.

3. Electrolytes
I always pack powdered electrolytes or travel-size bottles. Adding them to your water helps replace what your body loses if you experience vomiting, diarrhea, or simply arenโ€™t eating much.

4. Rest and Sleep
This is the hardest part, especially on vacation. But rest is often the fastest path to recovery. I am the type of person who has a fully planned day, so this is the most difficult for me.

5. B.R.A.T. Foods
When I finally start to feel hungry, I stick to the B.R.A.T. diet, foods that are gentle on digestion:

  • Bananas

  • Rice

  • Applesauce

  • Toast (gluten-free or gluten-free crackers)

My personal rule? I donโ€™t eat unless Iโ€™m truly hungry. Giving my stomach a break usually helps me recover sooner.

6. Ginger Candy or Tea
Ginger helps calm nausea and an upset stomach. I love keeping:

  • Ginger chews

  • Ginger tea packets

  • Ginger mints

Theyโ€™re small, easy to pack, and incredibly soothing.

7. Curcumin
Curcumin can act as a gentle anti-inflammatory. Some travelers find it helps calm post-glutening symptoms.

8. Imodium A.D.
This one is completely personal. Some people prefer to let their body naturally โ€œpurgeโ€ gluten, while others use Imodium A.D. when theyโ€™re in a tough situation, like being on a plane, in transit, or away from easy bathroom access. Itโ€™s not for everyone, but many travelers feel better having it in their kit when symptoms would otherwise keep them running to the bathroom for hours.

Customize Your Emergency Kit

Everyoneโ€™s body is different, so what works for me may not work for you. Use this as a foundation and adjust based on:

  • Your doctorโ€™s advice

  • Your typical symptoms

  • Your comfort level with supplements

  • Whatโ€™s allowed in your carry-on

A small pouch filled with these essentials fits easily in a backpack, purse, or carry-on, and can save your trip.

Reduce Your Risk: Plan Ahead

While no system is perfect, you can reduce the chances of getting glutened on vacation by:

  • Researching safe restaurants ahead of time

  • Reading reviews from other gluten-free travelers

  • Calling restaurants to ask about cross-contact protocols

  • Asking clear questions when ordering

  • Carrying a gluten-free translation card in the local language, if abroad

  • Planning your trip with a travel agent that understands, like Gluten-Free Vacations!

Preparation gives you confidence, and your emergency kit gives you peace of mind.

Final Thoughts

Getting glutened on vacation is frustrating and miserable, but having a plan makes all the difference. With a simple Gluten-Free Emergency Kit, you can support your body, minimize downtime, and get back to enjoying your trip as quickly as possible.

Travel should be joyful, not stressful. A little preparation goes a long way toward keeping you safe, healthy, and ready to explore gluten-free. And if youโ€™re looking for more tools to help you travel gluten-free, check out my blog post on my Top 3 Gluten-Free Resources.

15 Ways to Travel Like a Pro

As a travel advisor for gluten-free travelers, I want to help people travel smarter, smoother, and with confidence, no matter where they're headed. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or getting ready for your first big trip, traveling like a pro means being prepared and staying flexible, especially when managing dietary restrictions.

In this blog, Iโ€™m sharing practical tips and gluten-free strategies to help you navigate your journey with confidence. From smart packing to handling travel delays and finding safe food options, these tips will help you stay stress-free and enjoy the adventure.

1. Donโ€™t Get Hangry

Travel days can be unpredictable, so always pack snacks and a full gluten-free meal as a backup. It may take some time to get settled at your destination or find safe gluten-free options at your resort or hotel. Having a full meal and a few snacks on hand will give you peace of mind and help you get through long travel days comfortably.

If youโ€™re flying, be sure to check the latest TSA regulations before packing food. I recommend bringing whole fruits and dry snacks for your flight. Items like yogurt, salad dressings, and dips can be tricky since there are restrictions on how much liquid or gel you can carry on. The good news is that you can always purchase these items after passing through security and bring them on the plane with you.

Some of my favorite travel snacks:

  • Fresh fruit such as oranges, apples, and bananas*

  • KIND Bars or Larabars

  • Gluten-free pretzels

  • Nuts or trail mix

  • Beef jerky (I love the Chomps brand!)

  • Rice cakes

  • Gluten-free cookies

  • Candy

*If youโ€™re traveling internationally, keep in mind that some countries do not allow travelers to bring fresh fruits or vegetables across borders, as they can introduce pests or plant diseases. In those cases, itโ€™s best to purchase produce once youโ€™ve arrived at your destination.

2. Pack in a Carry On

International baggage claims can take up to an hour, or worse, bags can get delayed. Thatโ€™s why I always recommend packing in a carry-on suitcase and bringing a backpack or large tote with essentials like medications, food, a change of clothes, and a swimsuit (in case your room isnโ€™t ready when you arrive). I havenโ€™t checked a bag in over 10 years, and I travel with two kids! They each bring their own carry-ons, and yes, it is possible. Packing light makes for a smoother, stress-free start to your vacation.

3. Purchase Travel Insurance

Even a small accident abroad can cost thousands, and most personal medical insurance plans donโ€™t cover international expenses. On top of that, many hospitals in other countries require upfront payment before providing care.

If you donโ€™t purchase travel insurance, you will need to make sure you have quick access to a large sum of money in case of an emergency. Travel insurance gives you peace of mind, protects your health and wallet, and can truly save the day when the unexpected happens. We recommend Travel Insured International.

4. Take Gluten-free Translation Cards

Clear communication is key when you're traveling gluten-free, especially in countries where you donโ€™t speak the language. Gluten-free translation cards can help you explain your dietary needs accurately and avoid cross-contact. We highly recommend Equal Eats, their cards are professionally translated, easy to carry, and a great tool for stress-free dining abroad.

5. Stay Connected

Make sure to get international cell phone service before your trip, youโ€™ll need it to access travel details, use apps like Find Me Gluten-Free, Google Translate, maps, and more. And donโ€™t forget to pack a power bank or portable charger to keep your phone powered throughout busy travel days. Staying connected means staying prepared, informed, and safe!

6. Make your bags traceable

I highly recommend using Apple AirTags or similar tracking devices when you travel. Whether it's checked luggage, carry-ons, or even your kids' backpacks, having a tracker gives you peace of mind. If a bag goes missing or an item gets left behind, youโ€™ll have a much better chance of quickly locating it, saving time, stress, and potential vacation headaches.

7. Download the Mobile Passport Control MPC app

If you donโ€™t have Global Entry, the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app is a great alternative, and itโ€™s free! You can upload your passport info and complete your customs declaration right in the app, allowing you to use a shorter line when going through U.S. Immigration. Itโ€™s a simple way to save time and make your return home smoother.

8. Pack a Portable Carbon Monoxide Detector

Many countries donโ€™t require carbon monoxide detectors, so I always travel with a compact one for peace of mind. I recommend this one because itโ€™s small, easy to pack, and reliable. Just donโ€™t forget to take it with you when you leave!

9. Take pictures of your passports

Take clear photos of your passports and store them in a secure, accessible place, like emailing them to yourself or uploading them to a cloud service. If your passport gets lost or stolen, having a copy can make it much easier to get assistance and replace it while abroad.

10. Bring your own over-the-counter medicine

Itโ€™s always smart to pack your own over-the-counter medications when traveling, just in case you need them and canโ€™t find the right products abroad. I personally use this one, it is small and can hold several types of medication.

11. Book excursions prior to arrival

To ensure youโ€™re able to join the excursions youโ€™re interested in, please make sure to book them before you arrive. You can find and reserve your excursions through Project Expedition.

12. Keep your valuables safe

Leave expensive jewelry at home and only bring what you truly need. For important items like passports, credit cards, and extra cash, always use the safe in your hotel room or cruise ship cabin to keep them secure when youโ€™re out and about.

13. Thank the Staff

Resort and cruise staff work incredibly hard, long hours, often with limited time off. In places like Mexico, where the minimum wage is only about 278.80 MXN (around $13 USD) for an 8-hour day, tips can make a huge difference. Even a few dollars can greatly impact their livelihood and often lead to warmer, more attentive service. A little gratitude goes a long way!

While tipping is appreciated, there are many other meaningful ways to show gratitude:

  • Compliment staff members directly - praising their help costs nothing but means a lot!

  • Let their manager know about outstanding service.

  • Write a positive review on sites like Tripadvisor, and mention the staff member by name.

For example, one client was so thankful for a server who carefully handled her gluten-free meal and ensured they knew how much they appreciated them. The server later surprised her with freshly made gluten-free muffins. When guests are kind and appreciative, staff often go the extra mile to make the experience unforgettable!

14. Pack a Positive Mindset & Patience

Having a positive outlook doesnโ€™t mean ignoring challenges or frustrations, but rather being prepared to handle them calmly and see them as opportunities. As a frequent traveler and advisor, Iโ€™ve seen delays, cancellations, and other setbacks happen regularly. Sometimes meals take longer than expected, or weather changes plans. Being open to these situations can help reduce stress and even turn unexpected changes into worthwhile experiences. For example, a client had their flight from London cancelled during a layover and chose to spend the day exploring the city instead of getting upset, turning a setback into a memorable part of their trip.

*Remember, a customized meal may take a bit longer to prepare. This isnโ€™t because of slow service, but because the staff is taking extra care to ensure everything is done safely and correctly.

15. Book with a travel advisor who specializes in vacations for gluten-free travelers

Working with an advisor who understands gluten-free needs can make a world of difference. They can recommend trusted resorts and vetted restaurants that accommodate your dietary needs, so you can relax, eat safely, and fully enjoy your vacation without the stress of worrying about food.

Google Translate Tips Every Gluten-Free Traveler Should Know

When you're traveling internationally with celiac disease or a strict gluten-free diet, communication can be one of the biggest hurdles, especially in a country where you don't speak the language. Menus become mysteries, questions feel awkward, and even reading ingredient labels can be overwhelming.

Whether youโ€™re traveling to Italy, Greece, Spain, or France, the Google Translate App can help! It's one of the best free tools out there for gluten-free travelers, and when used well, it can help you feel more confident and prepared wherever you go.

Hereโ€™s how to make the most of it.

Download the Google Translate App Before You Go

Google Translate App

Donโ€™t rely on Wi-Fi or data when youโ€™re standing in a busy restaurant. Before your trip, download the Google Translate app and the language packs youโ€™ll need for offline use. This way, youโ€™ll always have translation access, even when you donโ€™t have internet.

To do this:

  • Open the app

  • Tap your profile picture or the menu icon

  • Select โ€œOffline translationโ€

  • Tap the download icon next to any language you need for offline access

Ways to Use the Google Translate App

Here are practical ways you can use Google Translate while traveling abroad to make communication smoother.

1. Instant Text Translation

Use you the Google translate app to translate menus

Use the camera feature to translate restaurant menus, grocery labels, or signs. All you need to do is point your phone at the text, and you can instantly read the text in your language. You can also do this with the live camera translation.

This is a lifesaver for:

  • Restaurant menus that donโ€™t offer English versions

  • Ingredient lists on packaged foods

  • Grocery store signage

Tip: If the translation is a little awkward, try taking a photo and using the "scan" or "select text" feature to manually highlight and translate specific words or sections.

Check out our video on how to translate food packaging.

2. Voice Translation for Conversations

Ordering food in the restaurant and want to ensure something is gluten-free? Use the microphone feature for two-way voice conversations. You speak into your phone, and it speaks back in the local language, for example you can:

  • Ask if a dish contains gluten

  • Explain your dietary restrictions

  • Say thank you

Voice Translations also makes it easier to save common phrases such as:

  • โ€œI have celiac disease and cannot eat any gluten.โ€

  • โ€œDoes this contain wheat, barley, or rye?โ€

  • โ€œCan I see the ingredient list?โ€

While Google Translate is useful for in-the-moment communication, itโ€™s also smart to travel with a printed gluten-free translation card.

Final Thoughtsโ€ฆ

While Google Translate isnโ€™t flawless, itโ€™s an incredibly powerful tool that helps bridge the communication gap for travelers with dietary restrictions, especially those who need to eat strictly gluten-free.

When in doubt:

  • Use the camera and typed text to double-check.

  • Combine translation with visual cues (packaging symbols, kitchen setup, staff knowledge).

  • Trust your gut. If something doesnโ€™t feel safe, skip it.

From reading menus and ingredient labels to explaining gluten-free in another language, Google Translate adds a layer of safety and peace of mind that can truly make or break a trip. Itโ€™s not a substitute for preparation or research, but itโ€™s a valuable companion that empowers us to travel with greater confidence, one gluten-free meal at a time.

Safe travels, and happy gluten-free exploring!

My Favorite Gluten-free Snacks at Disney World

If you plan on visiting Walt Disney World and are interested in eating gluten-free food, this blog post is for you! Below are my favorite gluten-free snacks.

Disney World Gluten-free Snacks Dole Whip

Dole Whips

A โ€œmust-haveโ€ dessert at Disney World is definitely the Dole Whips. These treats are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and are free from top allergens. Some of the most popular flavors are pineapple, strawberry, lemon, orange, coconut, and raspberry. Note, these can be twisted with vanilla flavor too, but vanilla does contain dairy and is not vegan.

Locations:
Magic Kingdom (Aloha Isle in Adventureland, Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland, and Storybook Treats in Fantasyland)
Epcot (Refreshment Port before Canada and Festival booths)
Animal Kingdom (Tamu Tamu Refreshments in Africa)

Also available at Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, Polynesian Resort, Art of Animation Resort, POP Century Resort, All Star Movies Resort, and The BoardWalk.

Pro Tip: Outside of Magic Kingdom youโ€™ll see Dole Whips also available with alcohol for a fun beverage option.

Churros

Yes, you can get gluten-free churros at Disney World! However, they arenโ€™t in an obvious location. Head to Nomad Lounge & Cocktail Bar in Animal Kingdom. You can wait for a table, but I prefer to walk up and get these to go and then enjoy them in the park.

Location: Nomad Lounge in Animal Kingdom

Pro Tip: Always order two orders. These churros are INCREDIBLE and my gluten-loving family thinks theyโ€™re better than the regular churros at the parks because theyโ€™re fresh. So always order one order for yourself and one for everyone else!

Pastries from Erin McKennaโ€™s Bakery

If youโ€™re in Disney Springs, make sure you head to Erin McKennaโ€™s gluten-free bakery for a snack or dessert. They have gluten-free donuts, muffins, cookies, cakes, etc. My favorite is the lemon teacake!

Plus - they deliver. You can order treats to be delivered to your resort and have snacks handy during your entire stay.

Location: Disney Springs

Pro Tip: Erin McKennaโ€™s is near The Boathouse. Go there for dinner first - trust me!!!

Mickey Ice Cream Bars

For a classic Disney dessert, have a Mickey Bar! These vanilla ice cream treats are covered in chocolate and also gluten-free. One reason why Mickey Bars are on my list - theyโ€™re convenient. Youโ€™ll be able to find these at multiple locations throughout the parks.

Locations: Throughout Disney Parks at snack kiosks and Disney World Resortsโ€™ shops.

Snacks With Character

If you want an easy classic snack that comes in handy, pick up Disneyโ€™s Snacks With Character. These pre-packaged snacks were developed for guests that are gluten-free, nut-free, or have other allergies.

All packages are labeled โ€œgluten-freeโ€ and youโ€™ll find cookies, corn puffs, chips, and rice crisps.

Locations: Available in stores throughout the parks and resorts.

's Snacks With Character Gluten-free

*Always double-check with a cast member to ensure that an item is safe for your dietary needs before consuming it.

Enhance Your Jamaican Travel Experience with Club Mobay

Heading to Jamaica with your flight and resort already booked? Thereโ€™s one more detail you wonโ€™t want to overlook: Club Mobay. If you're flying into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, this premium airport service can save you time and make your airport experience less stressful.

What is Club Mobay?

Club Mobay is a VIP airport experience designed to take the hassle out of both your arrival and departure. This includes VIP Fast Track through immigration and customs and access to their VIP lounge.

If you are looking to save time and want to upgrade your airport experience, I recommend Club Mobay.

Who Should Book Club Mobay?

While anyone can benefit, Club Mobay is especially ideal for:

  • First-time visitors to Jamaica

  • Travelers during the busy season (Decemberโ€“April)

  • Families with kids or elderly travelers

  • Honeymooners or special occasion travelers looking for a smooth, luxurious experience from start to finish

Is it worth the additional cost?

In my opinion, Club Mobay is a great option if youโ€™d like VIP Fast Track and lounge access, but I donโ€™t recommend booking it for their gluten-free food options (details below). You will most likely want to purchase gluten-free food in the airport or bring your own food with you.

Club Mobay Services

Whether you're arriving in Jamaica or heading home, Club Mobay offers a seamless, VIP experience that takes the stress out of airport travel. Below is a breakdown of Club Mobay options:

Arrival Experience โ€“ VIP Fast Track

The moment you land at Sangster International Airport (MBJ), your vacation begins. A friendly Club Mobay representative will be waiting for you at the designated meeting point, holding a sign with your name.

From there, youโ€™ll be personally escorted through:

  • The Fast Track immigration line (skip the crowds!)

  • Assistance with luggage at baggage claim

  • An invitation to relax in the Club Mobay arrival lounge while you wait for your ground transportation

This arrival experience is ideal after a long flight, giving you a stress-free welcome to paradise.

How much time will VIP Fast Track save you? The exact amount of time can depend on the number of arriving flights, time of day, and need for declarations. During peak times, immigration and customs can take 1-2 hours, while only 15-30 mins with Club Mobay.

Departure Experience โ€“ VIP Fast Track & Lounge Access

Leaving Jamaica is never easy, but Club Mobay makes it more enjoyable. After checking in with your airline, youโ€™ll receive:

  • Expedited security clearance

  • Access to the luxurious 11,000 sq. ft. departure lounge

  • A complimentary bar, light bites, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages

  • A peaceful, quiet space to relax before your flight

  • Optional spa services (additional cost)

  • A family zone and business center for your specific needs

Whether you're traveling solo, with family, or on a romantic getaway, the departure lounge gives you the perfect send-off.

VIP Lounge Features:

  • Comfortable Seating

  • Free Wi-Fi

  • Expedited Security (Fast Track)

  • Flight Information and Boarding Announcements

  • Private Restrooms and Showers

  • Spa Services

  • Complimentary Phone Calls

  • Free Food and Beverages

  • Adults-Only Lounge Area

  • Kids' Play Area (Pickney Place)

  • Newspapers and Magazines

Gluten-free Options

While Club Mobay in Sangster International Airport (MBJ) has a variety of gluten-free items, we still recommend being cautious. The buffet at the departure lounge clearly labels gluten-free options and has fresh fruits, salads, and snacks.

Travel Tip for Celiac and Gluten-Sensitive Guests:
Like many buffets, thereโ€™s always a risk of cross-contact. To stay on the safe side, itโ€™s best to speak with a staff member directly about specially prepared gluten-free options that may be available or choose prepackaged snacks, like chips.

Also, consider planning ahead by asking your resort concierge or room service if they can arrange a gluten-free snack or meal for your journey to the airport. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your travel day stays stress-free and enjoyable.

Below are some gluten-free options that were available during my last visit. Items with a green card were considered gluten-free.

Pricing Details

Cross-Contamination Versus Cross-Contact: Whatโ€™s the Difference?

If you're new to gluten-free living or have recently been diagnosed with celiac disease, you may have heard both "cross-contact" and "cross-contamination" used when talking about food safety. While theyโ€™re often used interchangeably, they actually mean different thingsโ€”and understanding the distinction is important when dining out or preparing meals at home. So, which is the correct term, and what is the difference?

What is cross-contamination?

โ€œCross-contaminationโ€ is a term used in food safety to describe the transfer of harmful bacteria (like Salmonella or E. coli) from one surface or food to another. This is a concern when handling raw meat, unwashed produce, or improperly cleaned cooking tools. If this happens, you get a foodborne illness.

Here are some common examples:

  • Cutting raw chicken and then vegetables on the same board

  • Employees handling food without washing their hands

  • Equipment contaminated with bacteria in factories or restaurants

While cross-contamination is a big deal in any kitchen, itโ€™s not specific to gluten.

To prevent cross-contamination and the spread of bacteria, always use a separate cutting board for raw meat and wear gloves when handling it.

What is cross-contact?

โ€œCross-contactโ€ occurs when food allergens or gluten are accidentally transferred from one food or surface to another that is intended to be allergen-free or gluten-free. For people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, even a tiny trace of gluten from โ€œcross-contactโ€ can cause serious illness.

Here are some common examples:

  • Using the same knife to cut a regular sandwich and then a gluten-free one

  • Toasting gluten-free bread in a shared toaster

  • French fries cooked in oil that was also used to fry breaded items containing gluten

  • A chef using the same gloves or cooking surface for both gluten and gluten-free meals

Even a crumb of gluten can trigger symptoms and intestinal damage in someone with celiac disease. Thatโ€™s why cross-contact must be taken seriously.

To prevent gluten cross-contact in a fryer, use separate equipment and fresh oil dedicated to preparing gluten-free food. This means using separate fry baskets, utensils, and even dedicated fryers. Always ask your server or chef if a fryer is truly gluten-free before ordering fried food.

Quick Comparison

Cross-Contamination Bacteria & Pathogens Foodborne illness Cooking will kill the bacteria and/or pathogens

Example: Raw chicken touching salad

Cross-Contact
Allergens or proteins
Immune reaction
Cooking will NOT kill off the allergens or proteins

Example: Gluten crumbs on a gluten-free plate

Why are these terms used?

Many people are unfamiliar with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities, and even fewer understand what โ€œcross-contactโ€ means or why it can make someone with an autoimmune condition seriously ill. However, the term โ€œcross-contaminationโ€ is more widely recognized, especially in the context of food safety and allergies.

Since food service workers often receive training in food preparation to prevent illness, those in the gluten-free community sometimes use the term โ€œcross-contaminationโ€ simply because it's better understood (and seems to be taken more seriously). Itโ€™s similar to how, when asked if we have an allergy, we say โ€œyesโ€ when ordering food, even though celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder. This shows the ongoing need for education and awareness about gluten-related conditions in the food industry and beyond.

We get itโ€ฆ

While the technically correct term for gluten transfer is โ€œcross-contact,โ€ we completely understand why many people say โ€œcross-contaminationโ€ instead. As mentioned above, โ€œcross-contaminationโ€ is often more widely recognized and taken seriously in restaurants.

So go with whatever feels most comfortable and gets the point across, especially when speaking with servers or chefs. Weโ€™ve said it ourselves, โ€œIโ€™m allergic to gluten and canโ€™t have any cross-contamination.โ€

Say whatever you need to say to ensure your meal is safe!

Why I Love Scape Park in Punta Cana

If you're heading to Punta Cana and want something fun, adventurous, and totally unique to add to your trip, let me introduce you to one of my absolute favorite places: Scape Park in Punta Cana.

I've been there twice now, and honestly, I would go back again in a heartbeat. It's just that good. Whether you're traveling with kids, teens, or a group of adults looking for some excitement, Scape Park has something for everyone.

While I love Scape Park, it's definitely NOT because of their gluten-free food options. Find out why I love this park and how to prepare if you are a gluten-free traveler.

So, What Is Scape Park?

Scape Park is this amazing eco-adventure park tucked away in Cap Cana, which is a gorgeous and upscale area in Punta Cana. The park is hugeโ€”think jungle trails, hidden cenotes (natural freshwater pools), ziplines, caves, and even animal encounters.

Itโ€™s the kind of place where you can spend the day doing as muchโ€”or as littleโ€”as you want. Want to zipline through the trees? Go for it. Prefer to chill in a hammock over the water or swim in a magical cenote? Thatโ€™s an option too. You get to set the pace and create your own perfect day.

Great for Adventure Lovers & Families

What I love most about Scape Park is its versatility. When I visited for the first time with my kids, there were so many activities they could safely enjoyโ€”like swimming near the waterfall, trying out the lower hammock ziplines, and exploring the scenic trails.

The second time, I went with a friend, and we leaned into the more adventurous stuffโ€”ziplining, cave exploration, and hiking to the Blue Hole. Itโ€™s a place where everyone can find something that fits their vibe for the day.

What to Wear to Scape Park

Trust meโ€”what you wear to Scape Park can make a BIG difference in how comfortable you are throughout the day. Since you'll be hiking, climbing, ziplining, swimming, and probably getting splashed more than once, the key is comfort and quick-drying clothes.

Youโ€™ll be wearing a harness for the zipline, so the more coverage you have, the betterโ€”it helps prevent any rubbing or chafing.

Based on my visits, hereโ€™s what I recommend:

  • For women and girls: A full-coverage swimsuit paired with quick-dry, waterproof shorts.

  • For men and boys: Swim trunks and a rash guard or quick-dry athletic shirt.

  • Water shoes: Waterproof shoes that are also sturdy enough for walking and light hiking. Think closed-toe water shoes or sandals with good grip. These water shoes are my favorite.

Whatever you do, leave your flip-flops at the resortโ€”theyโ€™re not great for ziplining or walking on paths.

What to Bring to Scape Park

  • A lock - There are lockers at the entrance that I recommend using to store all valuables. If you donโ€™t have a lock, they sell them for $5.

  • A towel โ€“ Lightweight and compact is best. If you are staying at a resort, you can take one from there, but always remember to return it.

  • A change of clothes โ€“ Especially if you're heading back to your resort in the shuttle and donโ€™t want to sit in wet clothes.

  • Sunscreen and bug spray โ€“ Always bring more than you think youโ€™ll need.

  • A waterproof phone case โ€“ This is a must to get some great pictures! I recommend one that you can wear around your neck and also fit a credit card or cash in for snacks or drinks. This waterproof phone case is my favorite.

Getting to Scape Park

Whether youโ€™re staying at a nearby resort or a bit farther away, there are several convenient transportation options to choose from.

Included Shuttle
One of the things I really love about Scape Park is how easy it is to get there. When you purchase your tickets, round-trip transportation from most Punta Cana resorts is included. A shuttle will pick you up in the morning and drop you off after your adventure-filled dayโ€”super convenient, and no need to stress about logistics. Note, the shuttle does stop at other resorts on the way, which can add to your transfer time.

Taxis
That said, if you're staying in Cap Cana, I actually recommend skipping the included shuttle and taking a quick taxi instead. Most Cap Cana resorts are just a few minutes from Scape Park, and a taxi typically costs around $4 plus a tip. Just ask the bellman at your resort to call one for you. This gives you way more flexibilityโ€”you can arrive and leave when you want instead of waiting on the group transfer.

When youโ€™re ready to head back, just stop by the info desk inside the parkโ€™s main store and theyโ€™ll call a taxi for you. I donโ€™t recommend hopping in one of the taxis waiting outsideโ€”better safe than sorry.

Private Transfers
If you're staying outside the main resort areas or just prefer to handle your own transportation, there are also plenty of private transfer options available. Your concierge can easily help you book one.

All in all, getting to and from Scape Park is a breeze, no matter where you're stayingโ€”so you can focus on the fun, not the commute!

Pro Tip - Arrive early! When the shuttle buses get there, lines can form at the entrance. Consider taking a taxi or private transfer and arriving 15โ€“20 minutes before the park opens to beat the crowd.

My Favorite Areas at Scape Park

Here are a few of my favorite spots in the parkโ€”but be sure to check out the park map for a full list of activities!

Saltos Azules

This area is basically a water playground with a waterfall, zipline jump, and hammock ziplines (great for younger kids!).

Hoyo Azul (aka the Blue Hole)

This is hands-down one of the most beautiful swimming spots. Itโ€™s a crystal-clear, bright turquoise cenote tucked beneath a cliff. The water is cold (which feels amazing on a hot day), and the whole hike to get there is just gorgeous.

Pro Tip: The hike along the wooded trails takes about 15โ€“20 minutes, so be sure to wear comfortable water shoes. Keep in mind, the distance of this hike might be a bit much for younger children.

Ziplining Through the Jungle

This isnโ€™t your typical zipline course! If you're craving a bit of adrenaline on your vacation, this experience won't disappoint. Choose from several exciting options, like the Eco Splash that sends you zipping through water or the Super Ride, where you soar headfirst in a flat-flying position.

Pro Tips:

  • Determine ending location - The ziplines wind through the jungle, with some returning to the starting point and others ending in different areas of the park. If you're with a group and some members aren't ziplining, be sure to ask the staff where they should meet you afterward.

  • Donโ€™t plan on pictures - Since most of the ziplines run through or above the trees rather than over walking paths, it's difficultโ€”if not impossibleโ€”for others to get photos of you while you're ziplining.

  • Do the Super Ride last - This zipline begins near the waterfall at the back of the park and ends up front by the lockers. If you choose to do it mid-visit, just keep in mind you'll need to walk all the way back through the park to return to other areas.

Animal Encounters

We got to see monkeys, parrots, and iguanasโ€”my kids loved this part. Itโ€™s a great break between the bigger adventure stuff.

Cultural Route & Cave Swim

On this nature walk, youโ€™ll get to check out real-life replicas of homes once lived in by the Taino Indians, Spanish conquistadors, African slaves, and Dominican peasants. After that, take a dip in a hidden cave spring and experience the refreshing water that ancient natives once used for sacred rituals. Itโ€™s a great way to connect with nature and soak up some culture at the same time.

Gluten-free at Scape Park

As someone who eats gluten-free and helps others do the same while traveling, I always go into day trips like this with a little bit of a plan.

The downside? Scape Park does have a restaurant and snack areas, but thereโ€™s VERY limited information about allergens and cross-contact precautions. Therefore, I do NOT recommend eating any of the prepared foods at the snack stands (pizza) or at the restaurant (burgers, fries, etc.). Youโ€™ll find packaged snacks like drinks, candy, and chips available for purchase.

The upside? You can enjoy a day at Scape Park while staying gluten-freeโ€”it just takes a little preparation.

So if you have celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten (like me), Iโ€™d recommend bringing your own food for the day.

Hereโ€™s what worked well for me on both of my visits:

  1. I ate a big breakfast at the resort before heading out, and then planned to return in the early afternoon for a late lunch back at the resort. I love this park because you really can go for a half day without feeling rushed.

  2. I packed my own gluten-free snacks like granola bars, beef jerky, and candy for quick energy throughout the day.

  3. I bought drinks at their snack stand (they had Gatorade, soda, and bottled waterโ€”plenty of safe options there).

If you're going to stay all day and need more than snacks, you could easily pack a gluten-free lunch in a small cooler bag. Many resorts will prepare a to-go meal if you request one through room service or the concierge.

Now technically... snacks from outside aren't allowed in the park, but Iโ€™ve never had an issue. I recommend bringing a gluten-free translation card in Spanish just in case you need to show it to a staff member.

So if you're looking to add a little adventure to your Punta Cana vacation, Scape Park is a must. From ziplining through the jungle and swimming in crystal-clear cenotes to exploring cultural trails and spotting wildlife, this park really does have something for everyone. Itโ€™s fun, flexible, and packed with unique experiences you wonโ€™t find at your resort.

And if youโ€™re gluten-free like me, with a little planning, you can still enjoy the day without stress. Whether you're traveling with kids, friends, or just looking for something different to do, Scape Park is absolutely worth the tripโ€”I canโ€™t wait to go back again!

My Favorite Vacations for Gluten-free Families

Traveling safely when you or someone in your family needs to be gluten-free is stressful! Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m excited to share some of my favorite vacations for families with gluten-free needs. As a travel advisor, I've helped countless families with children who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity find the perfect vacation spot. And as a mom of two (ages 11 and 13), I know just how crucial kid-friendly food options are, especially for picky eaters.

While travel can sometimes be stressful, there are countless ways to make it easier for you and your little ones. The good news? Many amazing resorts and cruise lines fully understand the importance of offering various gluten-free food options and preventing cross-contact.

If youโ€™re ready for a stress-free getaway with your family, check out my top 3 vacation picks for gluten-free families: all-inclusive resorts, Disney World, and cruises. Each offers safe and delicious gluten-free dining optionsโ€”and Iโ€™m sharing exactly why theyโ€™re my favorites below!

All-Inclusive Resorts

I absolutely love all-inclusive resorts, and hereโ€™s why: they take the stress out of vacation planning, which allows you and your family to relax and enjoy your time together. With a wide variety of dining options, I never have to worry about what my family can eatโ€”itโ€™s all taken care of with top-notch cuisine that caters to our dietary needs. Plus, all the activity options and amenities mean thereโ€™s something for everyone, from lounging by the pool to fun excursions. Itโ€™s the ultimate hassle-free vacation. We can focus on making memories, not planning meal plans.

However, not all all-inclusive resorts are equal!!!

Iโ€™ve personally visited over 60 all-inclusive resorts, and honestly, there are many that I would never recommend for anyone with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. But the good ones that really focus on food quality and service? They can give you an amazing vacation experience! You'll get delicious, safe gluten-free options that'll let you relax and enjoy your trip without any worries.

My favorite all-inclusive resorts offer the following:

  • Wide Variety of Gluten-Free Options: Some of my favorite resorts offer gluten-free bread, pizza, pancakes, French toast, burgers, French fries, pastries, etc. For once, you can finally go on vacation and indulge!

  • Understanding Cross-Contact: These resorts understand the importance of preventing cross-contact. When you check in with the hostess at a restaurant, theyโ€™ll ask you if anyone in your party has allergies so they can notify your server. They also have dedicated prep areas and a knowledgeable staff to ensure meals are safe. Chefs and kitchen staff undergo specialized training and often use separate utensils and cooking stations to prevent gluten exposure.

  • Stress-Free Experience: To me, there is nothing worse than spending your vacation researching where you'll have your next meal. At an all-inclusive resort, all restaurant staff receive the same training, so you can dine worry-free at any of the on-site restaurants.

  • Unlimited Dining: The beauty of all-inclusive resorts is that you can order as much food as you want. Have a picky eater who didnโ€™t like their dinner? No worriesโ€”just order something else! Want to mix things up? Try appetizers at one restaurant and dinner at another. I often do this myself because I need to sample a variety of gluten-free items for my clients (tough job, right?). Iโ€™ve even had nights where I hit up multiple restaurants for dinnerโ€”rumor has it, I once dined at five different places in one evening (never doing that again, though!).

Whether youโ€™re lounging by the pool or splashing in the ocean, youโ€™ll never have to worry about whatโ€™s for dinner. Think about those afternoons with a refreshing cocktail in one hand and a gluten-free snack in the other while the kids are off enjoying supervised activities. Bliss, right?

Disney World

Disney World Gluten-free Travel Agency

Ah, the magic of Disney! For those of us who need to eat gluten-free, Disney is extra magical! We can enjoy everything the park provides, as well as safe gluten-free food. The best part is they have โ€œkid-approvedโ€ food. As a family that must have gluten-free options, we not only plan our day around rides and experiences, but also where we can get the best gluten-free foods. Gluten-free churros, anyone?

Why I love Disney World vacations:

  • Comprehensive Menus: Most restaurants offer a separate section outlining gluten-free items, making it easy to choose safe and delicious meals. Whether you're dining at Cinderellaโ€™s Royal Table or grabbing a quick bite at a food cart, gluten-free choices are clearly marked so everyone can enjoy the parks!

  • Kid-Friendly Options: Think gluten-free chicken tenders, pizza, and even Mickey-shaped treats that the kids will love. Yes, your little ones can still enjoy all their favorite theme park foods without any worries! Even classics like churros and popcorn have gluten-free versions.

  • Trained Staff: Disneyโ€™s staff is highly trained in preventing cross-contact. As an extra measure of safety, they place a skewer in your food that says "allergy." This is reassuring for those with allergies. Not only can you have fun, but you donโ€™t have to constantly be worrying about your food.

  • Ability to Bring Your Own Food: Especially for young children or picky eaters, I understand the importance of being able to have familiar foods while traveling. Thankfully, Disney allows you to bring your own food to the parks and even a small cooler. If you're staying at a nearby hotel, I highly recommend using Walmart or Instacart for a grocery delivery order. This way, you can have all your favorite food items ready and waiting for you the day you arrive. Itโ€™s a game-changer for making your trip stress-free!

  • Erin McKennaโ€™s Gluten-free Bakery: A trip to Disney World isnโ€™t complete without a stop at Erin McKennaโ€™s Bakery in Disney Springs.
Pro Tip: On the day you arrive in Orlando, head to Disney Springs for dinner (The Boathouse is my personal favorite). Afterward, swing by Erin McKennaโ€™s to load up on gluten-free donuts and pastries to enjoy throughout the week. Itโ€™s the perfect way to start your vacation!

From character breakfasts where the kids can meet Mickey and friends to dinners lit by fireworks, Disney World ensures magical and safe dining experiences for everyone. Thereโ€™s something so comforting about knowing that your food is safe, so the entire family can focus on having a great time, whether that's meeting Elsa or soaring through Space Mountain.

Cruises

Cruise Gluten-free, Travel Agency

Set sail on an adventure without the worry of finding safe meals. Cruises are a fantastic choice for gluten-free travelers:

  • Diverse Food Options: Main dining rooms and specialty restaurants offer a wide variety of gluten-free dishesโ€”from breakfast to dessert. Whether you're enjoying gourmet dining or a casual meal, the choices are plentiful and delicious.

  • Dedicated Server: In the main dining room, youโ€™ll have a dedicated server each night. They know your dietary needs and ensure every meal is safe. This means you will not have to explain your dietary restrictions each time you eat! It sounds so simple, but for those of you who have dietary restrictions, you understand what a big deal this is! Having the same server enhances your comfort and trust in safe food.

  • Ability to Explore: Enjoy new destinations and ports knowing youโ€™ll have a safe place for breakfast and dinner. Youโ€™ll only need to figure out where to eat lunch or you can pack something to take with you into port.

Cruising means you get to explore multiple destinations while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with dedicated gluten-free dining. Imagine exploring the ruins of the Caribbean during the day and indulging in a multi-course gourmet gluten-free meal as you watch the sunset over the sea.

Final Thoughts

Traveling gluten-free doesn't have to be stressful. From all-inclusive resorts to Disney World to cruises, these destinations offer stress-free, fun-filled experiences with safe dining options. Each destination is prepared to make your vacation an unforgettable family experience by ensuring everyoneโ€™s dietary needs are met effortlessly.

So, pack your bags and letโ€™s make some unforgettable memories! Adventures await you where gluten worries are left behind.

Have questions or need help planning your next gluten-free family vacation? Iโ€™m here to make it all smooth-sailing!

Happy travels!

Gluten-Free Travel Essentials: What to Pack for All-Inclusive Resorts, Cruises, Disney, & Europe

If youโ€™re planning an upcoming vacation and have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, you may be wondering what to pack to stay safe while traveling. Whether youโ€™re heading to an all-inclusive resort, cruise, Disney World, or Europe, having the right gluten-free essentials can make all the difference. Iโ€™ve rounded up my favorite must-have items to help you stay prepared, eat safely, and enjoy a stress-free trip!

#1: Pack snacks

This might seem obvious, but donโ€™t forget to pack snacks! Thereโ€™s nothing worse than being stuck somewhere without access to gluten-free food. I keep extra snacks in my purse or backpack at all times.

If youโ€™re flying, make sure to check current TSA regulations. I recommend packing whole fruits and dry snacks when flying. Yogurt, salad dressings, and dips can be an issue because you are limited to how much liquid you can carry on. However, you can purchase these items once youโ€™re through security and then can take them on the plane with you.

Some of my favorite snacks:

As someone who needs to eat gluten-free, breakfast is the most difficult meal to find. Therefore, I pack breakfast options when I travel.

Breakfast:

*If youโ€™re traveling internationally, some governments donโ€™t allow travelers to bring fresh fruit or vegetables in because it could introduce a new pest or disease into the local environment. Instead, I recommend purchasing fruit or vegetables once you arrive at your destination.

#2: Resealable Storage Bags

Make sure to bring plenty of small resealable storage bags to pack any snacks or treats that you pick up along the way. If you find some incredible gluten-free pastries, youโ€™ll probably want to take a few extra with you for later.

#3: Cooking supplies

If youโ€™re headed somewhere where youโ€™ll have access to a kitchen, pack a cutting board, mat, toaster bags, foil, etc. Having items to prep meals or snacks will help prevent cross-contact. Foil makes lining baking pans easy to prevent cross-contact.

#4: Cleaning supplies

Take a travel pack of sanitizing wipes, a travel bottle of dish detergent, and a sponge, just in case you need them. This will allow you to clean your cooking surfaces and supplies.

#5: Gluten-free translation cards

If you are traveling internationally, youโ€™ll want to make sure you take a gluten-free translation card to communicate your dietary restrictions to your restaurant server. I recommend Equal Eats translation cards, and you can purchase physical or digital cards. Equal Eats also offers custom translation cards for those with multiple allergies.

#6: Downloaded gluten-free apps

Do some research before you leave on what restaurants and grocery stores will be in your local area, but also download some gluten-free apps in case you need them when youโ€™re in your destination. Some of my top picks are:

#7: Medications just in case

Bring your standard over-the-counter medications (Tylenol, digestive enzymes, probiotics, activated charcoal, Tums, ginger candy to settle your stomach, etc.), but also check with your doctor to find out what he or she recommends to help you recover. You also might want to consider asking your doctor for a note stating that you have celiac disease in case you need to present it to anyone who needs to be informed about your diet.

#8: Travel insurance documents

Things can happen on vacation, and if youโ€™re traveling internationally, I consider travel insurance a must-have. While you might have medical insurance already, most domestic health insurance policies do not provide coverage outside of your home country.

Many people donโ€™t realize that most travel insurance companies offer 24/7 assistance, too. So if you get sick while youโ€™re away and need to find a local doctor or hospital, you can call their 1-800 number, and they can help you with this process. We recommend Travel Insured International.

By taking some extra time to plan what to pack, you can have a more stress-free vacation. When you get back, if there are items you wish you wouldโ€™ve brought, make a note for your next trip!

Should You Tip at an All-Inclusive Resort?

Planning a vacation at an all-inclusive resort? While most meals, drinks, and activities are included, one question that comes up oftenโ€”especially for gluten-free travelersโ€”is: Should I tip? The answer isnโ€™t always straightforward, as tipping customs can vary by resort and destination. In this post, Iโ€™ll walk you through when and how to tip, how much cash to bring, and why tipping can make a big differenceโ€”particularly when staff go out of their way to ensure your meals are safe and your experience is unforgettable.

This is especially important in destinations like Mexico, where the minimum wage is lowโ€”just 278.80 MXN (about $13 USD) for an entire 8-hour workdayโ€”tips can make a big difference. Even a few dollars can significantly impact someoneโ€™s livelihood and often lead to even better service.

Is tipping included at all-inclusive resorts?

While tipping isnโ€™t always required at all-inclusive resorts, itโ€™s often appreciated, especially when someone goes the extra mile to make your stay safe and comfortable. This is especially true for gluten-free travelers, where personalized service can make all the difference in your dining experience and vacation.

Important Note: Some resorts, like Sandals and Beaches Resorts, have a strict no-tipping policy (except for spa staff and butlers). Be sure to check your resortโ€™s guidelines in advance.

Who should you tip at an all-inclusive resort?

Tipping can encourage continued excellent service throughout your stay. While you donโ€™t need to tip after every meal or drink, it's expected to tip:

  • Restaurant Servers

  • Beach / Poolside Servers

  • Spa Services

  • Transfer Drivers

  • Tour / Excursion Guides

How much cash should you bring?

A good rule of thumb is to carry $150โ€“$300 USD in small bills to make tipping simple and convenient. U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout the Caribbean and Mexico, though exchanging some cash for pesos in Mexico is always a thoughtful gesture and often appreciated.

I typically recommend bringing $100 in $1s, $100 in $5s, and $100 in $10s. Make sure your bills are clean and undamagedโ€”bills with tears, markings, or excessive wear may be refused.

Recommended Tipping Amounts

DINING

  • Buffet Meals Servers: $1โ€“$2 per table
(especially if they ensure you have safe gluten-free options from the kitchen)

  • Buffet Station Chefs: $1
(especially if they prepare a custom gluten-free dish for you)

  • ร€ la Carte Meal Servers: $5-$10 per couple

  • Bartenders: $1โ€“$2 per round
Insider Tip: Stick with the same bartender throughout your tripโ€”theyโ€™ll get to know your preferences (including gluten-free drink requests) and often provide even better service.

When you travel with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, dining out can feel risky. But a little gratitude can go a long way. Tipping the staff who take care of your gluten-free needs encourages careful, attentive service throughout your stay.

Whether itโ€™s a server double-checking your order, a chef preparing your food separately, or buffet staff retrieving safe items from the kitchen, these small acts of care can mean the difference between getting sick and an amazing vacation experience. Recognizing their effort with a tip not only shows appreciation, but it also motivates them to continue prioritizing your safety.

SERVICE

  • Concierge: $5โ€“$10, depending on your usage

  • Room service: $5โ€“$10 depending on complexity and time of day

  • Housekeeping: $2 per day (leave on pillow)
Insider Tip: Want more bottled water or wine instead of soda in your fridge? Leave a $2โ€“$5 tip with a written request.

TRANSPORTATION

  • Bag Attendants: $1 per bag or per room visit

  • Private Transfer Drivers: $5โ€“$10 per person, depending on distance

  • Bus Drivers: $1โ€“$2 per couple

  • Tour / Excursion Guides: $5 to $10 per person. For smaller groups or longer tours, you can consider tipping 10% to 20% of the total tour cost.

By tipping those who go the extra mile, youโ€™re more likely to receive consistent, high-quality service, making your trip less stressful and more enjoyable. Youโ€™ll spend less time worrying about cross-contact and more time relaxing.

The takeaway: If someone helps you eat safely, tip themโ€”your stomach (and peace of mind) will thank you.
