Client Spotlight: Emily’s Vacation to Amsterdam & Paris

Emily enjoying coffee and a gluten-free sandwich in Amsterdam

We love sharing client stories — especially when they highlight how memorable and stress-free gluten-free travel can be with the right planning! We’re excited to feature Emily’s incredible trip to Amsterdam and Paris with her mom and sister. This special getaway was inspired by her mom’s travel bucket list, and both cities had long been dream destinations she hoped to visit one day.

This was the third trip we’ve had the pleasure of planning for Emily, following her getaways to the Riviera Maya and a Mediterranean cruise.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, we recommended and booked her hotels, shared our top gluten-free travel tips, and provided a list of must-see attractions in both cities. We also gave her resources to find safe dining options on the go and curated a list of trusted restaurants that cater to gluten-free travelers.

From strolling through the stunning Keukenhof Gardens at the height of tulip season to enjoying delicious gluten-free pasta, pastries, and sandwiches in Paris and Amsterdam, Emily’s trip was full of unforgettable moments. Keep reading to discover her favorite highlights and go-to gluten-free spots!

Trip Date: April 2025

Travel Advisor: Anjli Patel

Destinations: 4 nights in Amsterdam, Netherlands & 5 nights in Paris, France

GETTING THERE

Before departing from JFK airport, Emily went to the Delta One Lounge. This lounge opened in 2024 and is Delta’s newest and most upscale lounge, designed just for Delta One (business class) passengers. It’s a huge space in Terminal 4 with a full-service restaurant, cocktails, private nap pods with massage chairs, and even showers with clothes steaming. The vibe is sleek and modern, with NYC-inspired design and a cool terrace overlooking the runway - perfect for relaxing before a long flight.

On her flight to Amsterdam, Emily had a Delta One seat (business class) and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the gluten-free options onboard — including Udi’s gluten-free bread!

Pro Tip: Do NOT rely on your airline to provide gluten-free food options. Even if requested ahead of time, things can happen. Your meal could be forgotten, you might not like what is served, etc. Always have a backup plan.

AMSTERDAM

Emily’s Favorite Activities in Amsterdam

  • Keukenhof Gardens - One of the world’s largest flower gardens, Keukenhof bursts with millions of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths each spring. A stunning spot for nature lovers and photographers.

  • Van Gogh Museum - Home to the largest collection of Van Gogh’s art, this museum offers a powerful look into his life, work, and legacy through paintings, sketches, and personal letters.

  • Anne Frank House - Here you can step inside the hidden annex where Anne Frank wrote her famous diary. This moving museum honors her story and the millions affected by the Holocaust.

Emily had the chance to explore Keukenhof Gardens during her trip, and she shared that the highlight of her vacation was “Visiting Keukenhof during peak tulip season! Gardens as far as the eye can see!”

Emily’s Favorite Restaurants in Amsterdam

PARIS

Emily’s Favorite Activity near Paris

  • Claude Monet's House in Giverny, France - A visit to Monet’s House is like stepping into one of his paintings. The beautifully preserved home offers a unique glimpse into the personal life of the renowned Impressionist artist. Surrounding the house are the vibrant gardens that inspired many of his most famous works, including the iconic water lily pond and Japanese bridge. It's a peaceful and picturesque escape from the city, located just about an hour from Paris by train. This charming destination is a must-see for art lovers and garden enthusiasts alike.

Emily’s Favorite Restaurants in Paris

  • Copains (Dedicated gluten-free bakery) - Each morning, Emily stopped by Copains for one of their delicious gluten-free bagel sandwiches, which she packed for lunch. This simple routine made it easy for her to explore the city without the stress of finding safe gluten-free options on the go.

  • Su Misura (Dedicated gluten-free restaurant) - Gluten-free pasta, ravioli, & gnocchi. This restaurant is also a 5-minute walk from the Eiffel Tower!

Should You Tip at an All-Inclusive Resort?

Planning a vacation at an all-inclusive resort? While most meals, drinks, and activities are included, one question that comes up often—especially for gluten-free travelers—is: Should I tip? The answer isn’t always straightforward, as tipping customs can vary by resort and destination. In this post, I’ll walk you through when and how to tip, how much cash to bring, and why tipping can make a big difference—particularly when staff go out of their way to ensure your meals are safe and your experience is unforgettable.

This is especially important in destinations like Mexico, where the minimum wage is low—just 278.80 MXN (about $13 USD) for an entire 8-hour workday—tips can make a big difference. Even a few dollars can significantly impact someone’s livelihood and often lead to even better service.

Is tipping included at all-inclusive resorts?

While tipping isn’t always required at all-inclusive resorts, it’s often appreciated, especially when someone goes the extra mile to make your stay safe and comfortable. This is especially true for gluten-free travelers, where personalized service can make all the difference in your dining experience and vacation.

Important Note: Some resorts, like Sandals and Beaches Resorts, have a strict no-tipping policy (except for spa staff and butlers). Be sure to check your resort’s guidelines in advance.

Who should you tip at an all-inclusive resort?

Tipping can encourage continued excellent service throughout your stay. While you don’t need to tip after every meal or drink, it's expected to tip:

  • Restaurant Servers

  • Beach / Poolside Servers

  • Spa Services

  • Transfer Drivers

  • Tour / Excursion Guides

How much cash should you bring?

A good rule of thumb is to carry $150–$300 USD in small bills to make tipping simple and convenient. U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout the Caribbean and Mexico, though exchanging some cash for pesos in Mexico is always a thoughtful gesture and often appreciated.

I typically recommend bringing $100 in $1s, $100 in $5s, and $100 in $10s. Make sure your bills are clean and undamaged—bills with tears, markings, or excessive wear may be refused.

Recommended Tipping Amounts

DINING

  • Buffet Meals Servers: $1–$2 per table
(especially if they ensure you have safe gluten-free options from the kitchen)

  • Buffet Station Chefs: $1
(especially if they prepare a custom gluten-free dish for you)

  • À la Carte Meal Servers: $5-$10 per couple

  • Bartenders: $1–$2 per round
Insider Tip: Stick with the same bartender throughout your trip—they’ll get to know your preferences (including gluten-free drink requests) and often provide even better service.

When you travel with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, dining out can feel risky. But a little gratitude can go a long way. Tipping the staff who take care of your gluten-free needs encourages careful, attentive service throughout your stay.

Whether it’s a server double-checking your order, a chef preparing your food separately, or buffet staff retrieving safe items from the kitchen, these small acts of care can mean the difference between getting sick and an amazing vacation experience. Recognizing their effort with a tip not only shows appreciation, but it also motivates them to continue prioritizing your safety.

SERVICE

  • Concierge: $5–$10, depending on your usage

  • Room service: $5–$10 depending on complexity and time of day

  • Housekeeping: $2 per day (leave on pillow)
Insider Tip: Want more bottled water or wine instead of soda in your fridge? Leave a $2–$5 tip with a written request.

TRANSPORTATION

  • Bag Attendants: $1 per bag or per room visit

  • Private Transfer Drivers: $5–$10 per person, depending on distance

  • Bus Drivers: $1–$2 per couple

  • Tour / Excursion Guides: $5 to $10 per person. For smaller groups or longer tours, you can consider tipping 10% to 20% of the total tour cost.

By tipping those who go the extra mile, you’re more likely to receive consistent, high-quality service, making your trip less stressful and more enjoyable. You’ll spend less time worrying about cross-contact and more time relaxing.

The takeaway: If someone helps you eat safely, tip them—your stomach (and peace of mind) will thank you.

Gluten-Free in the City of Light: My Parisian Journey

Paris traveling with celiac disease - Gluten-free Vacations

Blog by: Noreen Wheeler

Bien Sûr (Of course)! Last summer, my daughters and I travelled to Paris. It was amazing! My daughter had dreamed of visiting Paris for years, so we packed in as much sightseeing as possible. It was truly unforgettable.

Of course, a great deal of planning went into our trip. Once we mapped out the sights we wanted to see, I began researching safe dining options — especially important because my youngest daughter and I both have celiac disease. We cannot have gluten or cross-contact with gluten so researching restaurants is always a must!

Paris wasn’t only about the food, though it was a highlight! Paris is known as “the city of love,” and there is something magical about it. It’s hard to explain. The architecture is beautiful, the streets have an old-world charm, and the atmosphere makes it unforgettable.

We also found the people to be kind and welcoming. I highly recommend learning a few basic French phrases before you go. Of course, “sans gluten” will be very important for those of us who cannot eat gluten. But even simple gestures, like smiling and saying “bonjour,” can go a long way. Even if your French isn’t perfect, Parisians generally appreciate the effort. Many will even ask if you’d prefer to continue to speak in French or switch to English—either way, it’s a nice way to connect and show a bit of respect for the culture.

If Paris is on your travel list, take a look below for some of my favorite things to do and the best gluten-free spots we discovered along the way!

My Favorite Things to Do in Paris

If I had to choose just five must-see spots in Paris, here’s where I’d start:

Louvre Museum

1. The Louvre Museum
This world-famous museum is an absolute must. Don’t go just for the Mona Lisa—there’s so much more to see. I’ve visited a few times with tours, but I never felt like I had enough time to stroll through the museum and see all the great artwork. If you can, set aside a few hours to wander through on your own—you won’t regret it.

2. The Eiffel Tower
You can’t visit Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower. If you decide to take the elevator to the top, be prepared—it can get very crowded, especially during peak tourist season. I recommend reading up on the tower’s history beforehand. A great way to learn about Parisian history is through Edward Rutherfurd’s Paris: The Novel. Though it’s historical fiction, it is based on real events and is very engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

3. Montmartre & Sacré-Cœur Basilica
Perched high above the city, the Sacré-Cœur Basilica is beautiful both inside and out. The view of Paris from the steps is breathtaking. Be sure to give yourself time to wander through Montmartre’s streets—this artistic neighborhood is full of life. You can watch street artists as they bring their art to life. Which is all part of the experience!

4. The Catacombs of Paris
This is a very unique experience. About 65 feet below the ground lie the remains of several million Parisians. Tickets often sell out, so it’s best to book in advance. Created in the late 1700s to address overcrowded cemeteries and public health concerns, the city began moving bodies from cemeteries in Paris to the catacombs. At the time, the catacombs were outside the city. While it might seem dark to some, I found the history behind this underground ossuary truly fascinating.

5. Bateaux Mouches River Cruise
One of the most relaxing ways to take in Paris is by boat. This cruise along the Seine offers views of many of the city’s most iconic landmarks. If you can, go in the evening—watching the city lights reflect on the water is so relaxing. It’s a great way to end a busy day of exploring.

My Favorite Restaurants for Gluten-Free Dining

One of the highlights of our trip was discovering Copains, a fully gluten-free bakery with several locations around the city. Luckily, our hotel was only a few blocks from one of their stores. Their pastries are incredible—the best I’ve had since my celiac diagnosis in 2013. They are flaky, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Each morning, we choose three different pastries to share, and never found anything we didn’t like. As someone who is often underwhelmed by gluten-free baked goods at home, this was a real treat.

Photos by Noreen Wheeler

We also enjoyed some fantastic meals at a few restaurants around the city. A few of our favorites included Le Poulbot, located in Montmartre, and two completely gluten-free restaurants near the Eiffel Tower—Su Misura and Tasca. Each place offered delicious food.

What would I do differently?

Stay longer!  We thoroughly enjoyed Paris, and next time, I’d plan for a longer stay. There were still so many places I wanted to explore, like the Musée d’Orsay, which we didn’t have time to visit on this trip.

As for Versailles, I’m not sure I’d go again. While the palace is beautiful and holds a great deal of history, the experience was not as captivating as I thought it would be. It’s about a 30–40-minute train ride from the city. We found it to be very overcrowded, which made it difficult to enjoy. If you have never been, it’s worth seeing—but only if you can go in the off-season to avoid the crowds.

Traveling to Paris with celiac disease might seem daunting at first, but with planning, it’s absolutely possible.  From unforgettable sights to mouthwatering gluten-free pastries, our trip proved that you don’t have to sacrifice taste or adventure while staying safe. Paris was very welcoming, and I’m already thinking about our next visit.

Whether you’re planning your first trip or returning to this magical city, know that gluten-free travel in Paris is possible! Bon voyage et bon appétit!

6 Reasons Why We Love AmaWaterways

As travel advisors, our goal is to curate exceptional experiences for our clients, and AmaWaterways never fails to deliver. Whether you're an experienced cruiser or embarking on your first river journey, AmaWaterways is a standout choice. Even better, they excel at accommodating dietary restrictions, making them an ideal option for travelers with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Here are the top 6 reasons why we love cruising with AmaWaterways!

1. Expansive Comfort

One of the best things about AmaWaterways is the open, relaxed feel of the ship. Unlike larger cruise lines, AmaWaterways’ ships are designed with comfort in mind, accommodating an average of just 156 guests. Spacious staterooms, uncrowded common areas, and panoramic views create a feeling of ease and privacy, so you can unwind at your own pace without the bustle of large crowds.

The extraordinary AmaMagna stands out with the largest and most luxurious suites on the Danube River. Expansive open-air Sun Decks offer even more to enjoy, including a walking track, pool or whirlpool (both available on AmaMagna), a bar, a comfortable sitting area, and plenty of room for their complimentary Wellness Program’s host-led fitness classes.

Many ships have large balcony staterooms as well. AmaMagna has stunning suites, complete with full balconies, range from 355 to 710 square feet.

2. Unmatched Personal Service

What really sets AmaWaterways apart is their attentive, thoughtful service. The crew members go out of their way to get to know you and make your experience personal and special. From remembering your name to anticipating your preferences, their service feels genuine and makes your journey that much more enjoyable.

“From the moment I boarded, the staff assured me they understood my gluten-free needs. They checked in regularly, from meals to excursions, to make sure I felt comfortable and safe. It was such a relief knowing I was taken care of."
- Gluten-free Traveler

3. All-Inclusive Shore Excursions for Every Traveler

Each destination offers a variety of excursions tailored to different interests and energy levels, all included in your fare. Love to explore by bike? They’ve got it. Prefer a gentle walking tour with a local guide? No problem. From historic city tours to scenic hikes and cultural food tastings, you’ll find an adventure that suits you — and makes each stop feel like a meaningful experience, not just a quick visit.

One of the many perks of sailing with AmaWaterways is that the ships dock right in the heart of each destination. Unlike ocean cruises, which often require long transfers from the port to the main city, smaller river ships can pull right up to central locations in most towns and cities. For example, In Europe, the ship docks in the heart of Vienna, right on the edge of Budapest's riverside and within walking distance of Strasbourg's enchanting Old Town. This allows you to explore at your own pace.

4. Award-Winning Culinary Experiences, Perfect for Gluten-Free Travelers

Dining on AmaWaterways is a standout experience, with menus inspired by each region you visit. And for gluten-free travelers, AmaWaterways does an incredible job at making sure you can dine with confidence. One gluten-free traveler shared, “Every meal was a delight, and I never had to worry about what I was eating—the staff took such care.”

AmaWaterways’ attention to detail extends to shore excursions, too. If an excursion includes a food experience, like a wine and cheese tasting or a cooking demo, the crew will work ahead to provide safe, gluten-free alternatives so you don’t miss a thing. And onboard, if you have questions or special requests, the chefs are happy to discuss your options directly.

6. Culturally Rich Destinations

AmaWaterways cruises through some of the world’s most beautiful and culturally rich regions, including Europe, Asia, and Africa, with thoughtfully crafted itineraries that highlight both famous landmarks and hidden treasures.

In Europe, you can explore the fairytale-like castles of The Rhine River Cruise, visit Monet’s gardens in Giverny and the historic shores of Normandy on The Seine River France Cruise, or discover Portugal’s stunning wine country on The Douro River Cruise, complete with authentic Fado music.

For those drawn to Southeast Asia, The Mekong River Cruise takes you deep into the heart of Vietnam and Cambodia. This journey includes vibrant floating markets, ancient temples like Angkor Wat, and close-up encounters with local village life.

AmaWaterways also offers unforgettable experiences beyond Europe and Asia. The Nile River Cruise explores Egypt’s ancient wonders, including Luxor, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the Great Pyramids. Insider Tips for Exploring Europe Gluten-Free

Food is an essential part of any travel experience, but following a strict gluten-free diet can make things a bit more complex. Imagine visiting Paris without savoring a buttery croissant or Rome without a freshly baked pizza? Fortunately, with some careful planning, it's possible to explore almost any destination in Europe without worrying about gluten. Traveling gluten-free is all about taking steps to create a safety net that allows you to enjoy the experience with confidence.

If you are just starting your trip planning, here are my 10 top travel tips for exploring Europe as a gluten-free traveler.

#1 - Plan With an Expert

As a travel advisor who specializes in travel to Europe for those who have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, I spend a significant amount of time researching destinations, restaurants, etc. When you work with me, you’ll get a proposal with a detailed itinerary, recommended excursion, travel insurance quotes, transportation options, and more. I help take the stress out of planning for gluten-free travelers and am available to answer any questions that you might have.

See more information on our European vacation planning packages.

#2 - Research Online Gluten-free Reviews

Dive into resources like Find Me Gluten Free, TripAdvisor, and local gluten-free blogs to uncover the best dining options.

Use online reviews as a guide, but don’t rely solely on them. Always reach out to restaurants directly to confirm that they can accommodate your needs. Each dining experience can vary, so it's best to verify yourself. Make sure to look for the most recent reviews or posts to ensure the information is up-to-date.

Additional Tip: Join local gluten-free Facebook groups for real-time advice and recommendations from fellow travelers. Any Celiac support group, like Coeliacs Eat Abroad, Celiac Travel, and Celiac Travel Group are great resources.

#3 - Leverage Europe's Awareness of Celiac Disease

Many European countries are well-versed in serving those with celiac disease. Italy, for example, has the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC), which has a list of gluten-free accredited restaurants. Plenty of options for gluten-free pizza and pasta! Research each destination’s awareness of celiac disease and local cuisine.

#4 - Carry a Gluten-Free Translation Card

When language barriers arise, a translated gluten-free restaurant card can clearly communicate your needs to restaurant staff. It’s a handy way to ensure that your dietary requirements are understood. We recommend Equal Eats translations cards.
Additional Tip: Print multiple copies or purchase multiple plastic cards in case you lose one or want to give them to different servers.

#5 - Use Google Translate

Download Google Translate before you leave for your trip. The app is user-friendly, offering a conversation feature that allows you to speak in English and instantly translate your words into the local language. It also includes a camera function, enabling you to scan labels or menus, translating text directly from the original language into your preferred language.
Additional tip: Download the language pack for your destination before you depart so you can use Google Translate offline, even when you don't have access to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

#6 - When in Doubt, Don’t Eat It

If you're uncertain about a meal's safety, it’s better to skip it. Getting exposed to gluten can be difficult to handle, especially when traveling. Trust your instincts and prioritize your health.

#7 - Pack a Meal for Your Flight as a Backup

While most international airlines can provide gluten-free meal options if requested in advance, we have seen many airlines forget to do this or have heard of travelers being glutened although their meal is labeled gluten-free. We always recommend requesting a gluten-free meal with your airline, but also packing a full meal as a back up plan in case your meal isn’t available or you don’t feel comfortable eating what is provided.
Additional Tip: When packing a full meal, please keep in mind that there is a limit on the amount of liquids you can have in your carry-on (liquids must fit inside 3.4-ounce containers that all fit into one quart-size bag).

#8 - Visit Local Grocery Stores

Knowing where the local grocery stores, especially near your hotel can help stock up on food and snacks on the go. Schär is a popular brand available all over Europe, which produces gluten free breads, pasta, snacks and sweets.
Additional Tip: Inquire about a mini fridge in your hotel room so you can store food.

#9 - Always Pack Gluten-free Snacks

Bringing your own snacks is a lifesaver when traveling gluten-free. Snacks help you bridge the gap between meals and prevent hunger when safe options are limited.
Additional Tip: Stock up on easy to carry items like granola bars, pretzels, nuts, etc.

#10 - Purchase Travel Insurance

Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical needs, especially if you have a serious reaction to gluten. It provides peace of mind, knowing you have support in case of emergency.
Additional Tip: Purchase your policy as soon as possible so that you are covered for pre-existing conditions. Many travel insurance companies require you to purchase a policy within a certain timeframe from your initial trip payment (some are 21 days).

Traveling gluten-free doesn't have to be stressful. With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy a delicious and safe gluten-free adventure across Europe!

If you are contemplating a Mediterranean cruise (or any European cruise), I can't recommend it enough. It's a travel experience that combines the convenience of cruising with the rich history and culture of Europe. The ships offer comfortable accommodations, delicious dining options, and excellent entertainment.

Bon Voyage!

9 Reasons You Should Use a Travel Agent for Your Next Trip

I don’t think there’s a single person that doesn’t get excited about planning a vacation. It’s a fun and relaxing experience that helps you take a break from your daily obligations and enjoy a faraway destination. But, for people dealing with food allergies and gluten intolerance, planning a trip is harder than it seems. Simply trying to choose a destination that will align with their diet requirements is very stressful. And this is just one of the reasons why you need to use a travel agent / advisor for your next trip (that’s me!).

I am here to tell you that you don’t have to do this on your own. Getting help from a travel advisor, particularly one specializing in organizing vacations for people who suffer from food allergies or celiac disease, will be very helpful for you. And if you’re interested to discover more than just a single reason why you should hire one, take a look at the list I provided below.

1. Travel Advisors Have Experienced It All

Being one of those people, I can say that we know all the ins and outs of travel planning. Thanks to their year-long experience with helping people plan their dream vacation, advisors can suggest everything from great resorts to visit-worthy attractions. They also make sure to pick those resorts that understand the danger of cross-contact and that are sure about the meals they deliver. This all promises you’ll have a vacation of a lifetime.

Moreover, every travel agent has something they specialize in. And since my area of expertise is gluten-free vacations, I often travel to inspect different resorts and destinations and also talk with the staff and try various gluten-free meals. For example, I visited a total of 21 resorts during my trip to Jamaica, doing detailed site inspections over the course of 5 days. I can say that what we do can be quite exhaustive, but it’s the only way to ensure you get first-hand experience. And I am honored to be the one that can promise you complete safety and satisfaction!

2. Saves You Time

Another reason to use a travel agent when planning your next trip is that they will save you time. You just need to rely on their skill and knowledge to plan your whole trip - from resorts and flights to numerous activities. This means that you won’t have to spend much of your valuable time planning and organizing everything because you’ll have an expert to do it for you.

3. Saves You From Stress

If you’re still asking yourself, “Should I use a travel agent?”, hear this: instead of stressing about your itinerary and budget, they will organize everything for you. This will reduce the amount of stress you’ll experience if you have to organize everything by yourself. And hiring them will assure you that every aspect is well-taken care of, which means that you get to enjoy your vacation completely.

4. Provides Personalized Service

Is there a better reason to use a travel agent than the fact they’ll give you the most personalized service ever? This means they’ll work hard to design an itinerary that meets your needs. So, whether you’re looking for a resort fit for a family or a place where you can spend some relaxing time as a couple, they got you. More importantly, if you have specific dietary needs that must be met, you can rest assured that they will be.

5. Provides Expert Recommendations

Online booking often makes things more confusing than they should be. There is sometimes too much or too little information for you to be able to decide whether a resort is the right pick for you or not. But since a travel agent is an expert in the field, they can suggest the best options and give you expert insight that will be really useful for your travel.

6. Helps You Choose the Best Destination

Maybe you already have an idea about where you’d want to go for your next vacation, but with so many options out there, it can be hard to come up with a final decision. One of the greatest reasons to use a travel agent is because they’ll give you valuable advice on both location and resorts. Since every place has its pros and cons, you can really benefit from their knowledge to suggest which one will work the best for you.

7. They Can Deal With Unexpected Situations

No plan works flawlessly every time, and this is true for travel plans, too. From flight delays and changeable weather to lost luggage and whatnot, your advisor can help you overcome these all. If something goes wrong, they’ll assist you in making any unnecessary itinerary changes.

8. Books Everything For You

Not only will your agent suggest the best destination, but they can also book the accommodation, airfare, transportation, excursions, etc. They will even provide their recommendations for travel insurance. This saves you time, stress, and unnecessary hassle, as they will take care of all the details on your behalf. In addition, they often have connections with the resort staff and various tour companies, allowing them to get better deals or upgrades. When you decide to use a travel agent, all that’s left to do is be as excited as you can about your upcoming adventure!

9. Saves You Money

Speaking of great deals, one of the answers to “Why should I use a travel agent?” is that they will help you save money. Such a person will provide you with the right connections, which can ultimately make your trip significantly cheaper than if you’d planned it on your own. A travel advisor has exclusive access to offers and promotions, and they can also advise you on the best time to book your travel, as well.

Exploring the Mediterranean with Royal Caribbean

I've had quite a few clients recently ask me about my experience on a Mediterranean cruise I took a few years ago with Royal Caribbean. As someone who enjoys cruising in general, I must say that a Mediterranean cruise takes things to an entirely different level compared to the Caribbean. The cuisine, the culture, and Europe’s myriad of historic ports make it an unforgettable adventure. Plus, if you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, Royal Caribbean is able to provide great options so that you can have a stress-free trip.

Despite the elevated experience, it's still a remarkable bargain when you consider that all your meals are included, there's fantastic entertainment, and you have the opportunity to visit multiple countries in a single trip. It's truly a wonderful way to see so much of the world in a relatively short amount of time.

We traveled with a lively group of 35 friends and family members on a 7-day Mediterranean cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas. We set sail from Venice, with stops in Dubrovnik, Chania, and Athens, before returning to Venice.

We decided to arrive in Venice two days prior to the departure of the cruise for two main reasons:

  1. To ensure we didn’t miss the start of the cruise in case of any flight delays.

  2. To have ample time to explore Venice thoroughly, knowing that by the end of the cruise, we would likely be eager to return home.

Our group of 35 visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia.

PRE-CRUISE IN VENICE, ITALY

Venice is a city that's best enjoyed leisurely, and those two days gave us the opportunity to soak in all its beauty and charm before embarking on our journey. During our stay, we had the opportunity to also visit Murano and Burano. Murano is famous for its exquisite glass making tradition. Burano, with its colorful houses, felt like stepping into a fairy tale.

GLUTEN-FREE TIP: Stop at MEA Libera Tutti, which is a gluten-free specialty grocery store and pick up cookies, snacks, etc. to have during the remainder of your trip! Make sure to check their hours ahead of time.

OUR SHIP

Rhapsody of the Seas

  • Maiden Voyage - 1997

  • Refurbished - 2012

  • Number of Decks - 12

  • Guests: 2,416 (total)

  • Restaurants: 3 complimentary and 5 specialty restaurants

I love Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Seas because it has a friendly, laid-back atmosphere, even though it’s an older ship. A few reasons why I love this ship is because of its small size, its ability to handle dietary restrictions, and the itineraries available.

Ship Size
Once we boarded the ship, the group went off exploring everything that Rhapsody of the Seas had to offer. I enjoyed this ship because of its smaller size, which provides a more intimate, curated adventure. We had some family members with slight mobility issues so it was no problem for them to navigate the ship. I also find that the lines to get into the shows and at the buffet are not long like the mega ships.

Gluten-free Dining
A few family members also had some dietary restrictions and cruising with Royal Caribbean provides a seamless way to manage this. The dining staff went out of their way to understand our needs and created unique meals tailored specifically to our group.

If you’re gluten-free, Royal Caribbean typically offers gluten-free bread, pasta, pizza, burger buns, pancakes, and desserts. Their staff understands the importance of avoiding cross-contact, and you’ll be able to order custom dishes from your servers. Note that larger ships have more restaurants, and therefore, offer more options.

  • Restaurants on Rhapsody of the Seas include:

    • Main Dining Room - a la carte breakfast and dinner

    • Windjammer Cafe - buffet

    • Park Cafe - made-to-order salads and sandwiches

    • Chops Grille - steakhouse (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

    • Giovanni’s Table - Italian cuisine (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

    • Izumi - Asian cuisine (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

    • Cafe Latte-tudes - coffee shop (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

  • My gluten-free dining tips:

    • Best Service - For the best service and attention to detail, dine in the Main Dining Room or specialty restaurants when possible. They have fewer guests per server / chef than the Windjammer Cafe, so they can cater to special requests more easily.

    • Main Dining Room - Here, you’ll even be able to order your meal the day prior, which will provide you with more options and reduce your wait time. For example, if you let them know a day in advance, they can usually provide gluten-free waffles or pancakes for breakfast.

    • Windjammer Cafe - When dining at the Windjammer Cafe, I recommend speaking with the maître d and they will let you know what gluten-free options are available on the buffet and what items can be prepared separately to avoid cross-contact. Many times, gluten-free bread, pasta, pizza, buns for burgers, etc. are available in the kitchen area and you can request a separate meal prepared for you.

Sign on the ship showing their dedication to providing gluten-free options.

Activities
Throughout the cruise, they had activities like sushi making classes, behind-the-scenes brunch tours, and my favorite - nightcaps at R Bar after an evening filled with exciting shows. If you have a competitive streak or want to fill a few hours with nonstop laughs, go to one of the cruise's game shows. Hosted by a hilarious emcee, these shows typically recreate popular challenges like Love & Marriage, Battle of the Sexes and Quest, an adults-only scavenger-style competition that separates the audience into teams and prompts them to work together in order to win. I definitely found out things I didn't know about my family and friends. Plus - kids will love the pools, kids clubs, rock climbing wall, arcade, movie nights, and more.

OUR PORTS OF CALL

One reason I love cruises for those with celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity, or other dietary restrictions is that passengers can enjoy safe meals for breakfast and dinner on the ship, only needing to plan lunch while in port. This makes the planning process much less stressful and allows for more freedom to explore.

GLUTEN-FREE TIPS:

  • Before you depart, download gluten-free apps for finding restaurants in your destination. If you book your vacation with our team, we will provide a list of apps specific to your destination and a list of recommended restaurants for gluten-free travelers near popular sites.

  • Carry a gluten-free translation card with you. If you book your vacation with us, we will mail you a gluten-free translation card in your document package.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Our first stop once we set sail was Dubrovnik, Croatia. This iconic city offers a rich blend of historical charm and scenic beauty. We walked along the Ancient City Walls for breathtaking views of the city and the Adriatic Sea. We wandered through Old Town, with charming shops and beautiful architecture. For the fans out there, which we were, Dubrovnik served as the filming location for King's Landing. The tour took us to all the spots!

Let us turn your dream vacation into reality!

When you work with us, you’ll get the following:

  • Recommendations for destinations, hotels, and cruises based on your needs

  • A custom itinerary and assistance booking excursions and transportation

  • Gluten-free travel tips and restaurant recommendations for your destination

  • Gluten-free translation cards to show restaurant servers

  • Custom document package mailed to you with your itinerary, confirmations, travel tips, and more!

Chania, Greece
Our next stop was Chania, Greece. We were supposed to go to Santorini, Greece however the ship wasn't able to tender there due to the rough sea water (don't worry, I ended up going back to Santorini AND Mykonos!). We ended up staying in Chania for 2 nights which, frankly, I loved! I really enjoyed exploring this picturesque coastal town thoroughly and it is probably one of my favorite Greek islands. We ate at a few restaurants in the Venetian Harbor and strolled through Agora Market for traditional Cretan products.

Athens, Greece
Our journey continued to Athens, the capital of Greece where ancient history meets vibrant modern culture. No visit to Athens is complete without exploring the Acropolis, Parthenon, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathenaic Stadium, or Syntagma Square. We experienced local culture and cuisine in the Plaka District.

I loved seeing all of the sites in Athens!

Venice, Italy
Our last port before heading back to Venice was to the historic site of Olympia, Greece, known for its ancient ruins and connection to the original Olympic Games. We had a fantastic opportunity to visit a local olive-making factory. We learned about the production process, sampled various types of olive oil, and even brought home bottles as souvenirs.

If you are contemplating a Mediterranean cruise (or any European cruise), I can't recommend it enough. It's a travel experience that combines the convenience of cruising with the rich history and culture of Europe. The ships offer comfortable accommodations, delicious dining options, and excellent entertainment.

Bon Voyage!

As an expert in planning travel to the Caribbean and Mexico, I’ve discovered a few must-have items that always enhance my trips. Whether you're heading to the vibrant shores of Jamaica, the stunning beaches of the Dominican Republic, the lush landscapes of St. Lucia, or the lively resorts of Cancun, packing the right essentials can make a significant difference in your experience.

These items are not just about convenience; they’re about making your vacation as smooth, enjoyable, and stress-free as possible. So, before you embark on your next tropical adventure, consider adding these essentials to your packing list.

Peace of Mind

Gluten-free translation cards are a must just in case you need to communicate your needs to your server or chef. A passport holder or wallet can keep your crucial documents protected, organized and easily accessible, making every airport experience smoother and more efficient.

Packing and Organization

Packing cubes and cases are essential for travel because they keep your belongings organized, maximize space, minimize wrinkles, and make packing and unpacking more efficient, ultimately reducing travel stress.

Packing Cubes

Small Travel Jewelry Box

Backpacks and Bags

Packing and organization are key to a seamless travel experience. I always take a large backpack on the small, a daypack for excursions, and a tote bag to carry items in at the resort.

Large Travel Backpack

I love this backpack because it fits my laptop, has so many compartments, and always fits under the seat on the plane.

Daypack Backpack

No matter which daypack you take, make sure it has a spot for a water bottle! I love this one because it is a small bag, but can hold 2 water bottles.

Straw Tote Bag

I always take straw bags to resorts because they match everything. I like this one because it is inexpensive and is almost flat when packed.

Travel Tech

Even if I go away for a weekend getaway, I never leave home without these tech items. They’re always in my backpack and ready to go.

Apple AirTags

Apple AirTags are a must-have and I have one in all of my bags and on my car keys.

AirTag Case

Portable Charger

Always necessary if you plan on going on an excursion!

Electronics Organizer

Apple Wireless Charger

Sunscreen

Sun Bum sunscreen is certified Hawaii Act 104 reef compliant, which means it is free of oxybenzone and octinoxate — two chemicals that are believed to be bad for the coral reefs. And it's hypoallergenic and gluten-free! Many resort sell Sun Bum, but is more expensive than purchasing it at home and staking it with you.

Gluten-Free Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Sun Bum Kids SPF 50

Sun Bum SPF 30
Sunscreen Lip Balm

Water Accessories

Whether you plan to lounge by the pool or go on excursions, these water accessories will enhance your experience.

Hammock Raft

Yes, I really take a raft in my suitcase! You’ll find that many people do too and will use them in the pools or in the ocean. I especially love hammock-style rafts because they are very portable.

Water Shoes

Water shoes are a must if you do an excursion that involves getting in and out of the water or going to an adventure park.

Waterproof Phone Case

I highly recommend this case so that you can get pictures on your excursions. I have taken this case on ziplines and through waterfalls!

Drinks and Food

Bringing your own tumbler, straw, and sandwich bags will just make your time a bit easier and more stress-free.

Stainless Steel Tumbler

Keep those cold drinks cold by the pool! Ask your bartender to refill your tumbler and they will be happy to.

Portable Straw

Many resorts have stopped providing straws or only have paper straws. If a straw is a must-have for you, consider taking a portable one.

Ziploc Sandwich Bags

Make sure to take resealable bags to keep any extra gluten-free snacks you’ll get at the resort. I typically take an assortment of sizes with me.

Gluten-Free Snacks

Although your resort might have plenty of gluten-free snacks, bringing your own is a must for on the plane, on excursions, and in case you need a late-night snack.

Gluten-free Granola Bars

Chomps Beef Jerky

Gluten-Free Oreos

Gluten-Free Pretzel Sticks

Cleaning

No one wants to get sick on vacation. Take these items to make sure you and your items are staying clean and free of germs.

Disinfecting Wipes

I love these small packs for cleaning my tray on the plane, tables at restaurants, or in my room.

Hand Sanitizer

Keep this handy when you need a quick and convenient way to clean your hands - especially on excursions.

Soap Infused Sponges

I love these sponges for cleaning my tumbler, portable straw, etc.

Travel Insurance: A Must-Have for Your Vacation

Planning a trip is always exciting, but there’s one important step you should never skip: purchasing travel insurance. While it might seem like an unnecessary extra, travel insurance can save you from a world of trouble. Imagine getting sick before your trip, your flight being delayed, or your luggage getting lost. With travel insurance, you’re covered and can enjoy your adventure without worry. It's a small investment for a lot of peace of mind. Here’s why travel insurance should be a non-negotiable part of your travel plans.

Who Should Purchase Travel Insurance?

Anyone traveling, whether domestically or internationally, can benefit from travel insurance. It’s especially recommended if you have the following travel plans:

  • Domestic Trips

  • International Trips

  • Multiple Trips in a Year

Top Reasons to Buy Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can cover a range of unexpected events. Here are the key areas to ensure you have covered:

  • Cancellation Protection

    • Trip Cancellation for a Covered Reason: If you need to cancel your trip due to reasons like sickness, natural disasters, or a family emergency, your travel insurance will reimburse you for non-refundable expenses.

    • Optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR): This add-on allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and still recover up to 75% of your costs. It's crucial to purchase CFAR within 10-15 days of your initial deposit.

  • Trip Interruption/Delays

    • Coverage for delayed or missed flights can save you from additional costs and inconvenience.

    • If your trip is interrupted due to illness or quarantine, insurance can cover extra expenses like extended hotel stays and meals.

  • Medical Protection

    • Domestic health insurance often doesn’t cover medical expenses abroad. Travel insurance ensures you receive necessary medical care without bearing the full cost.

  • Personal Belongings

    • Coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items can save you from significant disappointment and financial loss.

  • In-Travel Support

    • Most travel insurance policies offer 24-hour emergency medical services and assistance, providing invaluable support in a foreign country.

Purchasing Travel Insurance

  • When to Buy

    • Ideally, purchase travel insurance within 10-15 days of your initial trip deposit to include CFAR coverage. However, you can still buy insurance up until your departure for medical and in-travel protection.

  • Buying Options

    • If you’re working with Gluten-free Vacations, we will provide a quote for travel insurance. Alternatively, you can purchase travel insurance directly online through the link below.

  • Read Your Plan Details

    • Carefully review all terms and conditions. If you have any questions, contact your insurance provider. Understanding your policy fully can prevent unpleasant surprises.

By securing travel insurance, you ensure a smoother, stress-free trip, knowing you’re protected from the unexpected. Don’t leave home without it!

My Must-Have Travel Apps

Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or embarking on a month-long journey, there's an app for every step of the way. As a travel agent who specializes in planning vacations for gluten-free travelers, there are several apps that I rely on frequently. These apps help me find the best restaurants, track flights, communicate with tour guides, and more.

Download the apps below and you'll be well-equipped to travel with confidence and ease. So, pack your bags, charge your devices, and let's dive into the world of apps that every gluten-free traveler should have in their arsenal.

Gluten-free Apps

With these apps, you'll have an easier time finding gluten-free food on your travels. Several different apps are fantastic resources for finding food and restaurants on a gluten-free diet. In addition, some of the following app options also have desktop versions available online.

Find Me Gluten Free

With this app you’ll have the ability to put in the location you're going to and instantly find restaurants vetted by others who are gluten-free. Rated by the safety, taste, and variety of food, reviewers can also leave a photo of their food or the restaurant's menu. Establishments that are dedicated gluten-free are marked by a green check mark. You can filter by the bakery, chains, brunch, lunch, takeout, delivery, pizza, beer, dessert, dairy-free, and kid-friendly.

In addition, the app also allows you to save restaurants and group them as you like by city. So when you're traveling, you can bookmark restaurants before you go on your gluten-free adventure! The paid app adds more features, so if you're a traveler, it's an excellent investment in finding safe gluten-free food!

Pro Tip: On the Find Me GF app, click “More” at the bottom, then “Airports”, and you’ll see restaurant ratings for most major airports.

Find Me Gluten Free

GF Scanner

The Gluten Free Scanner allows you to scan the barcode on a product. After scanning the barcode, this app will tell you if the product is gluten-free. If the product is not found or is missing ingredients, you can contribute by leaving product feedback.

When traveling, this app is great if you are at a grocery store or the airport and aren’t sure if a package item is gluten-free.

GF Scanner

GlutenDude

Gluten Dude provides a directory of 100% gluten-free restaurants and restaurants that are also gluten-free friendly. The founder vets the restaurants on the app, and new restaurants are added daily. He also has a list of gluten-free beer brands and stores that sell gluten-free beer.

For travelers, this app also offers a directory of airports with a list of every eatery at the airport and ratings on the gluten-free availability of foods.

GlutenDude

Travel Apps

WhatsApp

If you’re visiting another country, WhatsApp is a MUST. WhatsApp allows you to make calls or text over wi-fi and is important when you don’t have access to cell service. For those traveling to the Caribbean or Mexico, most resorts and tour / transportation companies use WhatsApp to communicate through this app.

WhatsApp

Google Translate

Google Translate is a lifesaver when you encounter languages you don't understand. You can translate text, spoken words, and even images. The conversation mode allows you to have real-time, two-way conversations with someone speaking a different language.

This app is so important for gluten-free travelers that don’t speak the local languages. While in some Spanish speaking countries you might be able to simply say “sin gluten”, you might also need to communicate with more detail at times.

Google Translate

Trip Plans

If you plan your next vacation with me, you’ll receive a link to download the Trip Plans app. This app will allow you to view your custom itinerary that I’ll create for you, all of your trip confirmations, my tips, and more. It will even automatically update if your flight times change.

Trip Plans

Your Airline’s App

Always download you airline’s app before you depart. This will allow you to get updates on your flights, view your boarding pass, make changes, etc.

Your Resort or Cruise Line’s App

Before you depart also download the app for your resort or cruise line if available. Many resorts now have apps where you can view the resort’s map, restaurant hours and menus, activity schedules, request room service, and more. For cruisers, having your cruise lines app is a must. With so many activities onboard, you won’t want to miss your favorites and their app is the best way to get information.

Traveling has never been easier thanks to these fantastic gluten-free and travel apps. Whether you're a meticulous planner or a spontaneous adventurer, these apps will make your next vacation stress-free. So, pack your bags and embark on your next adventure, knowing you have the best travel apps by your side. Bon voyage!

Have a favorite app that you don’t see on my list? Please send me a note to let me know.

5 Reasons Why Traveling Should Be Your Top Priority

Are you feeling burnt out from your daily routine and need a break? Or maybe you want to explore new cultures and create lasting memories with your loved ones. Whatever your reason, traveling should be at the top of your priority list. If you need more convincing, here are my top five reasons to travel:

At one of my favorite resorts in Punta Cana enjoying Shrimp Fra Diavolo. So good!

Delicious and Gluten-Free Travel

Being gluten-free shouldn't stop you from exploring the world and trying new foods. I've worked with all-inclusive resorts and cruise lines that provide my clients with safe and delicious gluten-free meals. While traveling, you can enjoy mouth-watering pizza, tacos, pastries, and even pasta. One of the many reasons to travel is that you deserve to have a worry-free vacation without sacrificing your dietary needs.

It's an opportunity to Immerse Yourself in Different Cultures

One of the most important reasons to travel is that it helps you appreciate the diversity of our planet and broadens your understanding of different ways of life. By getting to know others better, you’ll better understand the world around you – but also yourself.

Traveling Is Good for Your Health – Both Physical and Mental

Traveling is not only a great way to disconnect from our daily routines, but it can also positively impact our physical and mental well-being. When we travel, we expose ourselves to new experiences, meet new people, and see new places, all of which can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. One of the most compelling reasons to travel is the significant impact it can have on our mental health. People often report feeling more relaxed, less anxious, and more content after returning from a trip, proving that travel is not only a way to explore the world but also to take care of ourselves.

In addition to its positive impact on mental health, traveling can also benefit our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as hiking, swimming, or walking around a new city can contribute to our overall fitness levels and help us maintain a healthy weight.

Traveling Is a Great Way to Bond With Your Favorite People

Traveling with your favorite people is an excellent way to strengthen relationships and create new memories. You'll have the opportunity to experience new things and create stories you'll cherish for years. Traveling with your partner on a romantic getaway can be a great way to reconnect and deepen your understanding of each other. Family vacations with the kids can be a wonderful way to share new experiences, learn new things, and have fun together.

Traveling with friends can also be a fantastic way to connect, no matter whether you are exploring a new city or going on an adventure. To be honest, regardless of who you travel with, the experience of sharing new adventures and making memories together will strengthen your relationships and create a bond that lasts a lifetime.

You Can Cross Off Your Travel Bucket List

We all have a travel bucket list, right? Whether it's swimming with sharks or hiking the Inca Trail, traveling is the perfect opportunity to make those dreams a reality. And the more you travel, the more places you want to visit. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your next adventure!

There are countless reasons to travel, but one thing is for sure: it's a life-changing experience that should be at the top of your priority list. The benefits of traveling are endless – from expanding your horizons and enriching your experiences to bonding with loved ones.

So let's work together to plan a trip you'll treasure forever!

Gluten-free Translation Cards: Eat Safe While Traveling

Traveling abroad can be a challenging experience for those who have dietary or allergy restrictions. Eating out, ordering food, or picking up groceries can be a stressful experience when you're in a new country!

To help make this process easier, I recommend having translation cards while traveling.

What are translation cards?

Translation cards are small, laminated cards that are the same size as a credit card, that provide documentation on any dietary or allergy restrictions that you have. You can have these cards translated into the language of the country you plan on traveling to. So the card will be English on one side and the foreign language on the other side.

Traveling to another country with dietary restrictions can be disheartening for those who don't speak the local language. And so, these handy translation cards help ensure that servers are aware of any particular limitations and can accommodate them appropriately.

I don’t leave home without my gluten-free translation card. It came in handy during my last trip to Mexico while visiting Playa del Carmen.

What is included on the translation cards?

There is plenty of helpful information on these cards that you can share with your server or restaurant staff. Using celiac disease as an example, cards will list foods that contain gluten like bread, pasta, or sauce. There is also a note on cross-contact, providing a warning that eating foods with cross-contact can make you very ill.

For travelers with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, translation cards can be a lifesaver! You can request a custom translation card too for purchase if you have multiple allergies and require a card to explain them at the restaurant.

Purchase Cards from Equal Eats

Equal Eats offers translation cards for individuals with dietary restrictions. Equal Eats was founded by Kyle Dine after traveling throughout Europe. He has multiple food allergies and is dedicated to helping other eat safer while traveling.

Whether it's a peanut allergy, celiac disease or a diabetic diet, Equal Eats provides cards in 50 different languages! All cards are professional translated and custom cards are available too.

Tips for purchasing translation cards

  • If you have multiple food allergies, make sure they are all included in your order so everything will be listed on your translation card.

  • Order your cards ahead of time so you can be sure that they will be delivered to you before you travel. I prefer the printed cards just in case my server needs to share my card with the chef. If you do purchase the digital version, make sure you have it on your phone and print a copy too.

  • To safeguard against the possibility of losing your card, ensure that you have at least two copies of it (one on hand and another stored in your hotel room should you lose your card).

Plan your vacation with me and you’ll receive a complimentary gluten-free translation card!

7 Tips for Flying Gluten-Free

I have to admit it, my least favorite part about traveling is flying. Getting to the airport on time, figuring out what to eat, etc., can all be stressful.

I travel internationally frequently (every other month) and there are a few things that I do to make my travel day less stressful. Below are my top tips for anyone flying that has celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity.

Tip #1 - Take Extra Gluten-free Snacks

Many airlines have eliminated meals and only provide them for long international flights. If you’re headed to the Caribbean or Mexico, expect to have drink service and pre-packaged snack options. However, you can’t guarantee that the snacks provided by your airline will be gluten-free.

You’ll need to pack your own gluten-free snacks (or even an entire meal). My favorite snacks to pack are Kind Bars, Chomp beef sticks, trail mix, gluten-free pretzels, etc.

Note the following:

  • Purchasing snacks at the airport - Most airports will have gluten-free snacks available to purchase, however, they will be much more expensive. Expect to pay 2-3 times the cost compared to purchasing snacks at your local grocery store.

  • Snacks provided by your airline - Do NOT rely on your airline to provide gluten-free food options (even if they say they’ll be available). Do NOT eat items provided by your airline unless they are packaged and labeled as gluten-free.

  • Pack more food than you think you’ll need - Make sure you have enough snacks in case your flight is delayed.

  • Packing fresh fruit - Do not take fresh fruit unless you plan to consume it on the plane. Some governments don’t allow travelers to bring fresh fruit or vegetables into their country because it could introduce a new pest or disease into the local environment.

  • Packing liquids - If you plan to pack any liquids in your carry-on, note the following:

    • All liquids in your carry-on must be in 3.4 oz containers or smaller and must all fit into a single clear quart size bag. Make sure it is accessible in case it needs to be checked.

    • Salad dressings, yogurt, etc. are considered liquids. You can purchase these in the airport once you are through security.

    • Most airports have water bottle filling stations. Bring an empty water bottle and fill it once you are through security.

  • Packing ice packs - You can take ice packs in your carry-on as long as they are frozen solid. Please note, you may need to bring your ice pack home in your checked luggage because you might not be able to refreeze it at your resort.

Most major airports will have gluten-free granola bars, candy, snacks, etc. available to purchase, but you’ll pay more for them at the airport. At this stand in Jamaica’s MBJ airport I purchased three candy bars and it cost $12 (2-3 times the cost at the grocery store).

Tip #2 - Check Your Airport's List of Restaurants Ahead of Time

Before you depart, determine if there will be restaurant options available for you at your airport and where they are located. However, I do NOT recommend trying new foods at the airport or eating at restaurants you aren’t familiar with. Being sick on a plane is a horrible feeling and isn’t worth the risk of trying a new food.

Tip #3 - Pack a Carry-on

Always take a carry-on with essentials needed for your first day. If your room isn’t ready, your resort will hold your luggage and you’ll be able to access items in your carry-on easy and enjoy the resort.

Always pack the following:

  • Prescription Medication

  • Hand Sanitizer / Sanitizing Wipes / Masks

  • Headphones

  • Valuable Jewelry

  • Eye Mask / Ear Plugs / Neck Pillow

  • Bathing Suit / Change of Clothes

  • Snacks (extra Gluten-free Snacks!!!)

  • Pen & Paper

  • Glasses / Sunglasses

  • Emergency Contact Info

  • Magazines / Books

Tip #4 - Arrive Early

TSA recommends getting to the airport 3 hours prior to departure for international flights and 2 hours prior to departure for domestic flights. Don’t start your trip by being stressed - get to the airport early!

A look back at that time I arrived at the airport and realized that all of the travel advisors I was traveling with also packed jean jackets. Lol!

Tip #5 - Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Getting TSA PreCheck and / or Global Entry can make your travel day much less stressful! It also means that you won’t have to take all of your liquid snacks out of your luggage and have them scanned separately.

TSA PreCheck - departures from US airports

  • If you fly frequently, I highly recommend getting TSA PreCheck, which is for departures from US airports. It allows you to have a shorter wait in security lines and you won’t need to remove your shoes, belt, laptop, liquids, and jacket.

  • To qualify, you must apply online and schedule an appointment at an enrollment center near you. The entire process is easy, however, appointments can be difficult to get and you might need to schedule a few months in advance. At your appointment they will take your fingerprints, scan your passport, etc. (take less than 5 minutes!).

  • Cost: $78 for 5 years

Global Entry - entering US airports from international flights

  • Global Entry provides a reduced wait time at Customs when entering the US from an international flight. It also includes TSA PreCheck and I highly recommend this for anyone that travels internationally.

  • To qualify, you must also apply online and schedule an appointment at an enrollment office.

  • Cost: $100 for 5 years and also includes TSA PreCheck

My pick - get Global Entry. For only $22 more you can get TSA PreCheck AND Global Entry.

To choose the best program for you and to apply, go to https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov/.

Tip #6 - Reserve a Gluten-free Meal

This tip is only for those flying on a long international flight (800+ miles). Some airlines will still provide meals on these longer flights and you can request a gluten-free meal. Simply contact your airline immediately after booking to notify them, call again 48 hours prior to departure, and confirm again with a ticket agent at the airport. Once you receive your meal, confirm again that it is gluten-free.

Note, gluten-free meals are NOT guaranteed. Even if you request a meal and the airline says that they can provide one, do not assume you will get a gluten-free meal and always pack your own food just in case.

Personally, I don’t try new foods prior to or during a flight. To me, there isn’t anything worse than being sick on a plane. I recently even had a friend travel with a major airline, was given a meal labeled “gluten-free”, was glutened, and was sick during the first 24 hours of her trip. Not worth it to me!

Tip #7 - Flying Home

If you are departing from the the Caribbean or Mexico, know that many smaller airports don't have a lot of dining options. Don’t plan for your departure airport to have gluten-free hot meals available, but most will have snacks or candy.

ALWAYS plan to eat before you leave your resort and bring your own snacks. Some resorts will even pack you a meal to-go if you ask. Just make sure your to-go meal doesn’t exceed the amount of liquids allowed through security.

Although flying can be stressful for those with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, you can safely fly as long as you are prepared. I hope these tips will help you on future travels!

Why I’m Gluten-free

“Why are you gluten-free?”
It’s one of the questions I get asked all the time. And if you’re already gluten-free, you probably know—it’s usually not a choice.

For me, going gluten-free completely changed my life.

In 2018, I was diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoidosis, a rare inflammatory disease that affected my lungs. I was dealing with shortness of breath, constant fatigue, and a string of strange symptoms that would come and go without warning. I felt like my body was spiraling, and nothing was in my control.

My doctors recommended long-term prednisone, but something in me hesitated. I wasn’t ready to rely on medication without exploring other options. That’s when I began researching ways to reduce inflammation naturally. With the guidance of a functional medicine doctor, I started a strict elimination diet—cutting out gluten, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol and focusing only on whole foods.

It was hard.

When one of my doctors first suggested giving up gluten and switching to whole foods, I broke down in her office. I loved food—especially dining out, socializing, and savoring pizza, tacos, pasta, and pastries. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine my life without them.

But thankfully, that decision turned out to be life-changing.

Gradually, the granulomas in my lungs disappeared. My energy came back. I started to feel like me again. I never needed to take prednisone, and today, I’m considered in remission.

Over time, I’ve been able to reintroduce some things into my life (hello, coffee!), but I’ve stayed 100% gluten-free. I feel my best this way, and I can’t imagine ever going back.

Enjoying gluten-free Shrimp Fra Diavolo in Punta Cana!

Do I miss gluten?

Not really. I’ve found so many amazing substitutes that satisfy my cravings.

But what I do miss? Convenience. I miss being able to grab a slice of pizza or a soft pretzel when I’m on the go without thinking twice.

Why did I start Gluten-free Vacations?

When I first started eating gluten-free, I was self-conscious every time I ordered at a restaurant. I felt like a burden. That experience opened my eyes to how hard it can be to travel and eat out with dietary restrictions.

In 2021, I launched Gluten-free Vacations to help other gluten-free travelers. The good news? There are incredible resorts that truly understand gluten-free travel—and yes, they even have indulgent options that are safe and delicious.

About 95% of my clients have celiac disease, but I’m here to support anyone avoiding gluten or managing food allergies. If that’s you, you’re not alone—and I’m here to help you travel confidently, deliciously, and safely.

How I Visited 21 Resorts in Jamaica

Last week, I completed site inspections at 21 resorts throughout Jamaica. Yes, it was as crazy as it sounds! Over the course of 5 nights, I stayed at 4 different resorts and visited properties in Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.

You might be wondering: What exactly are site inspections? What do I look for when I visit resorts? And what’s my schedule like during these trips? Let me take you behind the scenes to explain why site inspections are so important for travel advisors and, ultimately, for you—the traveler.

What are site inspections?

Site inspections are guided tours that allow travel advisors to visit resorts, explore their amenities, and meet with the management team. These visits are essential because they provide firsthand experience and insight that simply can’t be captured online.

For me, site inspections are all about ensuring that I can confidently recommend resorts to my clients based on their unique needs. They’re a crucial part of my job as a travel advisor.

Why are site inspections important?

Even the most luxurious resort can evolve over time. That’s why I revisit resorts, even those I’ve been to before, to check for updates, improvements, or changes.

When you’re investing in a vacation, you want confidence in the recommendation, whether it’s about the quality of the rooms, the dining experience, or the overall atmosphere. Site inspections help me ensure that every detail is up to par.

What do I look for on site inspections?

Here are some of the key factors I evaluate:

  • Cleanliness: This is a BIG one for me. I’ve found that resorts with excellent cleanliness standards are often better at accommodating dietary restrictions like celiac disease and food allergies.

  • Maintenance: Is the property well-kept? I check for ongoing upkeep like fresh paint, replaced furnishings, and well-maintained grounds. Photos online can sometimes be misleading.

  • Vibe: Each resort has its own atmosphere—some are perfect for a quiet retreat, while others cater to a lively crowd.

  • Staff: Especially when it comes to food and drink service, I assess how well-trained staff are in handling dietary restrictions.

  • Dining: I pay close attention to the variety and quality of dining options, including how they manage dietary needs.

  • Drinks: I always keep an eye out for gluten-free drink options like Tito’s vodka.

Taking a quick break in Negril. Love the crystal clear water!

Are site inspections like a vacation?

Not at all! While I get to visit beautiful properties, relaxing by the pool or beach is rare.

For example, on this trip, my days started at 6 AM to capture photos of the resort before guests were up and about. Then I’d spend the day touring multiple resorts, followed by dinner with my team or resort staff. By the time I returned to my room, it was time to catch up on emails for my clients.

Although these trips are demanding, I can’t complain. I love my job, and seeing the world beats sitting in an office in Maryland any day.

Do I rate resorts?

Absolutely—and I’m very selective.

Of the 21 resorts I visited in Jamaica, I would only recommend 7 for travelers with celiac disease, gluten sensitivities, or other food allergies. Cleanliness, staff training, and dining options are critical factors in determining whether a resort meets my standards.

Enjoying some time with my team! I am affiliated with Shoreline Destinations, which provides opportunities to do site inspections and I get to work with an incredible group of advisors.

Which resorts would I recommend?

It depends on your preferences and budget! Jamaica offers an incredible variety of resorts, from family-friendly options to boutique luxury retreats for couples. If you’re considering a trip to Jamaica, I’d love to help you find the perfect resort for your needs.

If you’re planning a vacation to Jamaica—or anywhere in the Caribbean—let me take the stress out of the planning process. I’ll help you choose the ideal resort for your dream getaway.

My Favorite Gluten-free Snacks at Disney World

If you plan on visiting Walt Disney World and are interested in eating gluten-free food, this blog post is for you! Below are my favorite gluten-free snacks.

Disney World Gluten-free Snacks Dole Whip

Dole Whips

A “must-have” dessert at Disney World is definitely the Dole Whips. These treats are gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and are free from top allergens. Some of the most popular flavors are pineapple, strawberry, lemon, orange, coconut, and raspberry. Note, these can be twisted with vanilla flavor too, but vanilla does contain dairy and is not vegan.

Locations:
Magic Kingdom (Aloha Isle in Adventureland, Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland, and Storybook Treats in Fantasyland)
Epcot (Refreshment Port before Canada and Festival booths)
Animal Kingdom (Tamu Tamu Refreshments in Africa)

Also available at Blizzard Beach, Typhoon Lagoon, Polynesian Resort, Art of Animation Resort, POP Century Resort, All Star Movies Resort, and The BoardWalk.

Pro Tip: Outside of Magic Kingdom you’ll see Dole Whips also available with alcohol for a fun beverage option.

Churros

Yes, you can get gluten-free churros at Disney World! However, they aren’t in an obvious location. Head to Nomad Lounge & Cocktail Bar in Animal Kingdom. You can wait for a table, but I prefer to walk up and get these to go and then enjoy them in the park.

Location: Nomad Lounge in Animal Kingdom

Pro Tip: Always order two orders. These churros are INCREDIBLE and my gluten-loving family thinks they’re better than the regular churros at the parks because they’re fresh. So always order one order for yourself and one for everyone else!

Pastries from Erin McKenna’s Bakery

If you’re in Disney Springs, make sure you head to Erin McKenna’s gluten-free bakery for a snack or dessert. They have gluten-free donuts, muffins, cookies, cakes, etc. My favorite is the lemon teacake!

Plus - they deliver. You can order treats to be delivered to your resort and have snacks handy during your entire stay.

Location: Disney Springs

Pro Tip: Erin McKenna’s is near The Boathouse. Go there for dinner first - trust me!!!

Mickey Ice Cream Bars

For a classic Disney dessert, have a Mickey Bar! These vanilla ice cream treats are covered in chocolate and also gluten-free. One reason why Mickey Bars are on my list - they’re convenient. You’ll be able to find these at multiple locations throughout the parks.

Locations: Throughout Disney Parks at snack kiosks and Disney World Resorts’ shops.

Snacks With Character

If you want an easy classic snack that comes in handy, pick up Disney’s Snacks With Character. These pre-packaged snacks were developed for guests that are gluten-free, nut-free, or have other allergies.

All packages are labeled “gluten-free” and you’ll find cookies, corn puffs, chips, and rice crisps.

Locations: Available in stores throughout the parks and resorts.

*Always double-check with a cast member to ensure that an item is safe for your dietary needs before consuming it.

8 Tips for Cruising Gluten-free

If you have celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity, or wheat allergy, you might be worried or anxious about cruising. Thankfully, many cruise lines have a wide-range of gluten-free offerings, dedicated preparation areas, and additional training for staff. However, all of the gluten-free options available to you might not be on the menus or on display in buffet areas.

If you’re planning to cruise, follow the tips below on how to have an amazing gluten-free cruise vacation.

#1 - Notify Your Cruise Line

Notifying your cruise line that you have celiac disease or are gluten-free should be done before your boarding date. It gives the ship notice of how many people will need gluten-free items and the ability to order larger quantities of gluten-free foods to have on hand. Many cruise lines offer bread, pizza, pasta, etc.

If you book your cruise through me, I’ll take care of this step for you.

#2 - Navigate Restaurants

  • Main Dining Room - Once you board the ship and are settled, head to your main dining room and ask to speak to the maître d'. Explain that you are gluten-free and then ask what options are available. Many maître d's will ask you to place your order the day before. Gluten-free foods are prepared at a separate station and giving the staff notice allows them to make sure they have the right ingredients.

  • Specialty Dining Restaurants - If you plan to go to a specialty dining restaurant, meet with the maître d' the night before to preorder your meal.

  • Buffets - Many cruise ships will have a gluten-free station or will have foods labeled that are gluten-free. Note, MANY additional gluten-free foods might not be displayed in buffet areas. During your first time at a buffet restaurant, ask the maître d' what additional items are available. They'll often have bread, pasta, pizza, etc. all prepared in dedicated areas.

  • Coffee Shops - Some ships will have gluten-free pastries in their coffee shops. Make sure these items are stored separately from other pastries and ask the staff if there is any chance of cross-contact.

#3 - Know Where to Dine

You'll find the best service and attention to detail is at specialty restaurants and in the main dining room. These areas have a lower server/chef to passenger ratio than the buffet restaurants and can create more custom dishes. For example, many main dining rooms can prepare gluten-free waffles or pancakes if you let them know the day before.

#4 - Make Friends!

Most maître d's and servers will want to make sure you have a great experience. Make sure to introduce yourself to the maître d' wherever you dine during the first 1-2 days. The staff has access to all of the kitchens and are usually more than happy to get you a special food if needed.

Celebrity Cruises Summit Gluten-free

My first day on the Celebrity Summit I asked Serkan if a dish was gluten-free and he immediately called the chef (and it was!). For the remainder of my cruise he was always a friendly face checking in on me.

Ashly on Celebrity Summit was notified by the chef at the pizza station that I ordered a gluten-free pizza. Once he knew I was gluten-free, he also checked on me when I dined at Oceanview Café.

#5 - Take Ziploc Bags

Many cruise ships offer gluten-free muffins or pastries. Grab a few extra and store them in Ziploc bags in your stateroom. They can come in handy when you need a late night snack.

#6 - Pack Snacks

Although your cruise ship will always have gluten-free items available, pack some convenient snacks that you can take into port or on excursions. Most excursions won't have gluten-free items so make sure you eat on the ship before you depart and take snacks with you.

#7 - Know Your Alcohol

If you plan to order alcoholic drinks, please make sure your server or bartender knows you are gluten-free. Most wines are gluten-free (be wary of wines that contain added flavorings) and you might also consider drinks with brandy, rum, tequila, or gluten-free vodka.

#8 - Take Medications

Always pack any medications you might need in case you are glutened. If needed, you can always speak with the staff in the onboard medical facility.

What to Pack for Your Gluten-Free Vacation

If you’re planning an upcoming vacation and have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, you might be wondering what to pack. Well, I’ve rounded up a list of my favorite things to pack to make sure you’re prepared and ready to have a great trip!

#1: Pack snacks

This might seem obvious, but don’t forget to pack snacks! There’s nothing worse than being stuck somewhere without access to gluten-free food. I keep extra snacks in my purse or backpack at all times.

If you’re flying, make sure to check current TSA regulations. I recommend packing whole fruits and dry snacks when flying. Yogurt, salad dressings, and dips can be an issue because you are limited to how much liquid you can carry on. However, you can purchase these items once you’re through security and then can take them on the plane with you.

Some of my favorite snacks:

  • Fresh fruit like oranges, apples, and bananas*

  • Kind Bars / Larabars

  • Gluten-free Pretzels

  • Nuts / Trail mix

  • Beef Jerky (I love Chomps brand!)

  • Rice cakes

*If you’re traveling internationally, some governments don’t allow travelers to bring fresh fruit or vegetables in because it could introduce a new pest or disease into the local environment. Instead, I recommend purchasing fruit or vegetables once you arrive at your destination.

#2: Resealable Storage Bags

Make sure to bring plenty of small resealable storage bags to pack any snacks or treats that you pick up along the way. If you find some incredible gluten-free pastries, you’ll probably want to take a few extra with you for later. ;-)

#3: Cooking supplies

If you’re headed somewhere where you’ll have access to a kitchen, pack a cutting board mat, toaster bags, etc. Having items to prep meals or snacks will help prevent cross-contamination.

#4: Cleaning supplies

Take a travel pack of sanitizing wipes and a travel bottle of dish detergent just in case you need them. This will allow you to clean your cooking surfaces and supplies.

#5: Gluten-free translation cards

If you are traveling internationally, you’ll want to make sure you take a gluten-free translation card to communicate your dietary restrictions to your restaurant server. I recommend Equal Eats translation cards and you can purchase physical or digital cards. Equal Eats also offers custom translation cards for those with multiple allergies.

#6: Downloaded gluten-free apps

Do some research before you leave on what restaurants and grocery stores will be in your local area, but also download some gluten-free apps in case you need them when you’re in your destination. Some of my top picks are:

#7: Medications just in case

Bring your standard over-the-counter medications (Tylenol, digestive enzymes, probiotics, etc.), but also check with your doctor to find out what he or she recommends to help you recover. You also might want to consider asking your doctor for a note stating that you have celiac disease in case you need to present it to anyone that needs to be informed about your diet.

#8: Travel insurance documents

Things can happen on vacation and if you’re traveling internationally, I consider travel insurance a must-have. While you might have medical insurance already, most domestic health insurance policies do not provide coverage outside of your home country.

Many people don’t realize that most travel insurance companies offer 24/7 assistance too. So if you get sick while you’re away and need to find a local doctor or hospital, you can call their 1-800 number and they can help you with this process.

By taking some extra time to plan what to pack, you can have a more stress-free vacation. When you get back, if there are items you wish you would’ve brought, make a note for your next trip!
