Why I Love Scape Park in Punta Cana

If you're heading to Punta Cana and want something fun, adventurous, and totally unique to add to your trip, let me introduce you to one of my absolute favorite places: Scape Park in Punta Cana.

I've been there twice now, and honestly, I would go back again in a heartbeat. It's just that good. Whether you're traveling with kids, teens, or a group of adults looking for some excitement, Scape Park has something for everyone.

While I love Scape Park, it's definitely NOT because of their gluten-free food options. Find out why I love this park and how to prepare if you are a gluten-free traveler.

So, What Is Scape Park?

Scape Park is this amazing eco-adventure park tucked away in Cap Cana, which is a gorgeous and upscale area in Punta Cana. The park is hugeโ€”think jungle trails, hidden cenotes (natural freshwater pools), ziplines, caves, and even animal encounters.

Itโ€™s the kind of place where you can spend the day doing as muchโ€”or as littleโ€”as you want. Want to zipline through the trees? Go for it. Prefer to chill in a hammock over the water or swim in a magical cenote? Thatโ€™s an option too. You get to set the pace and create your own perfect day.

Great for Adventure Lovers & Families

What I love most about Scape Park is its versatility. When I visited for the first time with my kids, there were so many activities they could safely enjoyโ€”like swimming near the waterfall, trying out the lower hammock ziplines, and exploring the scenic trails.

The second time, I went with a friend, and we leaned into the more adventurous stuffโ€”ziplining, cave exploration, and hiking to the Blue Hole. Itโ€™s a place where everyone can find something that fits their vibe for the day.

What to Wear to Scape Park

Trust meโ€”what you wear to Scape Park can make a BIG difference in how comfortable you are throughout the day. Since you'll be hiking, climbing, ziplining, swimming, and probably getting splashed more than once, the key is comfort and quick-drying clothes.

Youโ€™ll be wearing a harness for the zipline, so the more coverage you have, the betterโ€”it helps prevent any rubbing or chafing.

Based on my visits, hereโ€™s what I recommend:

  • For women and girls: A full-coverage swimsuit paired with quick-dry, waterproof shorts.

  • For men and boys: Swim trunks and a rash guard or quick-dry athletic shirt.

  • Water shoes: Waterproof shoes that are also sturdy enough for walking and light hiking. Think closed-toe water shoes or sandals with good grip. These water shoes are my favorite.

Whatever you do, leave your flip-flops at the resortโ€”theyโ€™re not great for ziplining or walking on paths.

What to Bring to Scape Park

  • A lock - There are lockers at the entrance that I recommend using to store all valuables. If you donโ€™t have a lock, they sell them for $5.

  • A towel โ€“ Lightweight and compact is best. If you are staying at a resort, you can take one from there, but always remember to return it.

  • A change of clothes โ€“ Especially if you're heading back to your resort in the shuttle and donโ€™t want to sit in wet clothes.

  • Sunscreen and bug spray โ€“ Always bring more than you think youโ€™ll need.

  • A waterproof phone case โ€“ This is a must to get some great pictures! I recommend one that you can wear around your neck and also fit a credit card or cash in for snacks or drinks. This waterproof phone case is my favorite.

Getting to Scape Park

Whether youโ€™re staying at a nearby resort or a bit farther away, there are several convenient transportation options to choose from.

Included Shuttle
One of the things I really love about Scape Park is how easy it is to get there. When you purchase your tickets, round-trip transportation from most Punta Cana resorts is included. A shuttle will pick you up in the morning and drop you off after your adventure-filled dayโ€”super convenient, and no need to stress about logistics. Note, the shuttle does stop at other resorts on the way, which can add to your transfer time.

Taxis
That said, if you're staying in Cap Cana, I actually recommend skipping the included shuttle and taking a quick taxi instead. Most Cap Cana resorts are just a few minutes from Scape Park, and a taxi typically costs around $4 plus a tip. Just ask the bellman at your resort to call one for you. This gives you way more flexibilityโ€”you can arrive and leave when you want instead of waiting on the group transfer.

When youโ€™re ready to head back, just stop by the info desk inside the parkโ€™s main store and theyโ€™ll call a taxi for you. I donโ€™t recommend hopping in one of the taxis waiting outsideโ€”better safe than sorry.

Private Transfers
If you're staying outside the main resort areas or just prefer to handle your own transportation, there are also plenty of private transfer options available. Your concierge can easily help you book one.

All in all, getting to and from Scape Park is a breeze, no matter where you're stayingโ€”so you can focus on the fun, not the commute!

Pro Tip - Arrive early! When the shuttle buses get there, lines can form at the entrance. Consider taking a taxi or private transfer and arriving 15โ€“20 minutes before the park opens to beat the crowd.

My Favorite Areas at Scape Park

Here are a few of my favorite spots in the parkโ€”but be sure to check out the park map for a full list of activities!

Saltos Azules

This area is basically a water playground with a waterfall, zipline jump, and hammock ziplines (great for younger kids!).

Hoyo Azul (aka the Blue Hole)

This is hands-down one of the most beautiful swimming spots. Itโ€™s a crystal-clear, bright turquoise cenote tucked beneath a cliff. The water is cold (which feels amazing on a hot day), and the whole hike to get there is just gorgeous.

Pro Tip: The hike along the wooded trails takes about 15โ€“20 minutes, so be sure to wear comfortable water shoes. Keep in mind, the distance of this hike might be a bit much for younger children.

Ziplining Through the Jungle

This isnโ€™t your typical zipline course! If you're craving a bit of adrenaline on your vacation, this experience won't disappoint. Choose from several exciting options, like the Eco Splash that sends you zipping through water or the Super Ride, where you soar headfirst in a flat-flying position.

Pro Tips:

  • Determine ending location - The ziplines wind through the jungle, with some returning to the starting point and others ending in different areas of the park. If you're with a group and some members aren't ziplining, be sure to ask the staff where they should meet you afterward.

  • Donโ€™t plan on pictures - Since most of the ziplines run through or above the trees rather than over walking paths, it's difficultโ€”if not impossibleโ€”for others to get photos of you while you're ziplining.

  • Do the Super Ride last - This zipline begins near the waterfall at the back of the park and ends up front by the lockers. If you choose to do it mid-visit, just keep in mind you'll need to walk all the way back through the park to return to other areas.

Animal Encounters

We got to see monkeys, parrots, and iguanasโ€”my kids loved this part. Itโ€™s a great break between the bigger adventure stuff.

Cultural Route & Cave Swim

On this nature walk, youโ€™ll get to check out real-life replicas of homes once lived in by the Taino Indians, Spanish conquistadors, African slaves, and Dominican peasants. After that, take a dip in a hidden cave spring and experience the refreshing water that ancient natives once used for sacred rituals. Itโ€™s a great way to connect with nature and soak up some culture at the same time.

Gluten-free at Scape Park

As someone who eats gluten-free and helps others do the same while traveling, I always go into day trips like this with a little bit of a plan.

The downside? Scape Park does have a restaurant and snack areas, but thereโ€™s VERY limited information about allergens and cross-contact precautions. Therefore, I do NOT recommend eating any of the prepared foods at the snack stands (pizza) or at the restaurant (burgers, fries, etc.). Youโ€™ll find packaged snacks like drinks, candy, and chips available for purchase.

The upside? You can enjoy a day at Scape Park while staying gluten-freeโ€”it just takes a little preparation.

So if you have celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten (like me), Iโ€™d recommend bringing your own food for the day.

Hereโ€™s what worked well for me on both of my visits:

  1. I ate a big breakfast at the resort before heading out, and then planned to return in the early afternoon for a late lunch back at the resort. I love this park because you really can go for a half day without feeling rushed.

  2. I packed my own gluten-free snacks like granola bars, beef jerky, and candy for quick energy throughout the day.

  3. I bought drinks at their snack stand (they had Gatorade, soda, and bottled waterโ€”plenty of safe options there).

If you're going to stay all day and need more than snacks, you could easily pack a gluten-free lunch in a small cooler bag. Many resorts will prepare a to-go meal if you request one through room service or the concierge.

Now technically... snacks from outside aren't allowed in the park, but Iโ€™ve never had an issue. I recommend bringing a gluten-free translation card in Spanish just in case you need to show it to a staff member.

So if you're looking to add a little adventure to your Punta Cana vacation, Scape Park is a must. From ziplining through the jungle and swimming in crystal-clear cenotes to exploring cultural trails and spotting wildlife, this park really does have something for everyone. Itโ€™s fun, flexible, and packed with unique experiences you wonโ€™t find at your resort.

And if youโ€™re gluten-free like me, with a little planning, you can still enjoy the day without stress. Whether you're traveling with kids, friends, or just looking for something different to do, Scape Park is absolutely worth the tripโ€”I canโ€™t wait to go back again!

My Favorite Vacations for Gluten-free Families

Traveling safely when you or someone in your family needs to be gluten-free is stressful! Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™m excited to share some of my favorite vacations for families with gluten-free needs. As a travel advisor, I've helped countless families with children who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity find the perfect vacation spot. And as a mom of two (ages 11 and 13), I know just how crucial kid-friendly food options are, especially for picky eaters.

While travel can sometimes be stressful, there are countless ways to make it easier for you and your little ones. The good news? Many amazing resorts and cruise lines fully understand the importance of offering various gluten-free food options and preventing cross-contact.

If youโ€™re ready for a stress-free getaway with your family, check out my top 3 vacation picks for gluten-free families: all-inclusive resorts, Disney World, and cruises. Each offers safe and delicious gluten-free dining optionsโ€”and Iโ€™m sharing exactly why theyโ€™re my favorites below!

All-Inclusive Resorts

I absolutely love all-inclusive resorts, and hereโ€™s why: they take the stress out of vacation planning, which allows you and your family to relax and enjoy your time together. With a wide variety of dining options, I never have to worry about what my family can eatโ€”itโ€™s all taken care of with top-notch cuisine that caters to our dietary needs. Plus, all the activity options and amenities mean thereโ€™s something for everyone, from lounging by the pool to fun excursions. Itโ€™s the ultimate hassle-free vacation. We can focus on making memories, not planning meal plans.

However, not all all-inclusive resorts are equal!!!

Iโ€™ve personally visited over 60 all-inclusive resorts, and honestly, there are many that I would never recommend for anyone with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. But the good ones that really focus on food quality and service? They can give you an amazing vacation experience! You'll get delicious, safe gluten-free options that'll let you relax and enjoy your trip without any worries.

My favorite all-inclusive resorts offer the following:

  • Wide Variety of Gluten-Free Options: Some of my favorite resorts offer gluten-free bread, pizza, pancakes, French toast, burgers, French fries, pastries, etc. For once, you can finally go on vacation and indulge!

  • Understanding Cross-Contact: These resorts understand the importance of preventing cross-contact. When you check in with the hostess at a restaurant, theyโ€™ll ask you if anyone in your party has allergies so they can notify your server. They also have dedicated prep areas and a knowledgeable staff to ensure meals are safe. Chefs and kitchen staff undergo specialized training and often use separate utensils and cooking stations to prevent gluten exposure.

  • Stress-Free Experience: To me, there is nothing worse than spending your vacation researching where you'll have your next meal. At an all-inclusive resort, all restaurant staff receive the same training, so you can dine worry-free at any of the on-site restaurants.

  • Unlimited Dining: The beauty of all-inclusive resorts is that you can order as much food as you want. Have a picky eater who didnโ€™t like their dinner? No worriesโ€”just order something else! Want to mix things up? Try appetizers at one restaurant and dinner at another. I often do this myself because I need to sample a variety of gluten-free items for my clients (tough job, right?). Iโ€™ve even had nights where I hit up multiple restaurants for dinnerโ€”rumor has it, I once dined at five different places in one evening (never doing that again, though!).

Whether youโ€™re lounging by the pool or splashing in the ocean, youโ€™ll never have to worry about whatโ€™s for dinner. Think about those afternoons with a refreshing cocktail in one hand and a gluten-free snack in the other while the kids are off enjoying supervised activities. Bliss, right?

Disney World

Disney World Gluten-free Travel Agency

Ah, the magic of Disney! For those of us who need to eat gluten-free, Disney is extra magical! We can enjoy everything the park provides, as well as safe gluten-free food. The best part is they have โ€œkid-approvedโ€ food. As a family that must have gluten-free options, we not only plan our day around rides and experiences, but also where we can get the best gluten-free foods. Gluten-free churros, anyone?

Why I love Disney World vacations:

  • Comprehensive Menus: Most restaurants offer a separate section outlining gluten-free items, making it easy to choose safe and delicious meals. Whether you're dining at Cinderellaโ€™s Royal Table or grabbing a quick bite at a food cart, gluten-free choices are clearly marked so everyone can enjoy the parks!

  • Kid-Friendly Options: Think gluten-free chicken tenders, pizza, and even Mickey-shaped treats that the kids will love. Yes, your little ones can still enjoy all their favorite theme park foods without any worries! Even classics like churros and popcorn have gluten-free versions.

  • Trained Staff: Disneyโ€™s staff is highly trained in preventing cross-contact. As an extra measure of safety, they place a skewer in your food that says "allergy." This is reassuring for those with allergies. Not only can you have fun, but you donโ€™t have to constantly be worrying about your food.

  • Ability to Bring Your Own Food: Especially for young children or picky eaters, I understand the importance of being able to have familiar foods while traveling. Thankfully, Disney allows you to bring your own food to the parks and even a small cooler. If you're staying at a nearby hotel, I highly recommend using Walmart or Instacart for a grocery delivery order. This way, you can have all your favorite food items ready and waiting for you the day you arrive. Itโ€™s a game-changer for making your trip stress-free!

  • Erin McKennaโ€™s Gluten-free Bakery: A trip to Disney World isnโ€™t complete without a stop at Erin McKennaโ€™s Bakery in Disney Springs.
Pro Tip: On the day you arrive in Orlando, head to Disney Springs for dinner (The Boathouse is my personal favorite). Afterward, swing by Erin McKennaโ€™s to load up on gluten-free donuts and pastries to enjoy throughout the week. Itโ€™s the perfect way to start your vacation!

From character breakfasts where the kids can meet Mickey and friends to dinners lit by fireworks, Disney World ensures magical and safe dining experiences for everyone. Thereโ€™s something so comforting about knowing that your food is safe, so the entire family can focus on having a great time, whether that's meeting Elsa or soaring through Space Mountain.

Cruises

Cruise Gluten-free, Travel Agency

Set sail on an adventure without the worry of finding safe meals. Cruises are a fantastic choice for gluten-free travelers:

  • Diverse Food Options: Main dining rooms and specialty restaurants offer a wide variety of gluten-free dishesโ€”from breakfast to dessert. Whether you're enjoying gourmet dining or a casual meal, the choices are plentiful and delicious.

  • Dedicated Server: In the main dining room, youโ€™ll have a dedicated server each night. They know your dietary needs and ensure every meal is safe. This means you will not have to explain your dietary restrictions each time you eat! It sounds so simple, but for those of you who have dietary restrictions, you understand what a big deal this is! Having the same server enhances your comfort and trust in safe food.

  • Ability to Explore: Enjoy new destinations and ports knowing youโ€™ll have a safe place for breakfast and dinner. Youโ€™ll only need to figure out where to eat lunch or you can pack something to take with you into port.

Cruising means you get to explore multiple destinations while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with dedicated gluten-free dining. Imagine exploring the ruins of the Caribbean during the day and indulging in a multi-course gourmet gluten-free meal as you watch the sunset over the sea.

Final Thoughts

Traveling gluten-free doesn't have to be stressful. From all-inclusive resorts to Disney World to cruises, these destinations offer stress-free, fun-filled experiences with safe dining options. Each destination is prepared to make your vacation an unforgettable family experience by ensuring everyoneโ€™s dietary needs are met effortlessly.

So, pack your bags and letโ€™s make some unforgettable memories! Adventures await you where gluten worries are left behind.

Have questions or need help planning your next gluten-free family vacation? Iโ€™m here to make it all smooth-sailing!

Happy travels!

Gluten-Free Travel Essentials: What to Pack for All-Inclusive Resorts, Cruises, Disney, & Europe

If youโ€™re planning an upcoming vacation and have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, you may be wondering what to pack to stay safe while traveling. Whether youโ€™re heading to an all-inclusive resort, cruise, Disney World, or Europe, having the right gluten-free essentials can make all the difference. Iโ€™ve rounded up my favorite must-have items to help you stay prepared, eat safely, and enjoy a stress-free trip!

#1: Pack snacks

This might seem obvious, but donโ€™t forget to pack snacks! Thereโ€™s nothing worse than being stuck somewhere without access to gluten-free food. I keep extra snacks in my purse or backpack at all times.

If youโ€™re flying, make sure to check current TSA regulations. I recommend packing whole fruits and dry snacks when flying. Yogurt, salad dressings, and dips can be an issue because you are limited to how much liquid you can carry on. However, you can purchase these items once youโ€™re through security and then can take them on the plane with you.

Some of my favorite snacks:

As someone who needs to eat gluten-free, breakfast is the most difficult meal to find. Therefore, I pack breakfast options when I travel.

Breakfast:

*If youโ€™re traveling internationally, some governments donโ€™t allow travelers to bring fresh fruit or vegetables in because it could introduce a new pest or disease into the local environment. Instead, I recommend purchasing fruit or vegetables once you arrive at your destination.

#2: Resealable Storage Bags

Make sure to bring plenty of small resealable storage bags to pack any snacks or treats that you pick up along the way. If you find some incredible gluten-free pastries, youโ€™ll probably want to take a few extra with you for later.

#3: Cooking supplies

If youโ€™re headed somewhere where youโ€™ll have access to a kitchen, pack a cutting board, mat, toaster bags, foil, etc. Having items to prep meals or snacks will help prevent cross-contact. Foil makes lining baking pans easy to prevent cross-contact.

#4: Cleaning supplies

Take a travel pack of sanitizing wipes, a travel bottle of dish detergent, and a sponge, just in case you need them. This will allow you to clean your cooking surfaces and supplies.

#5: Gluten-free translation cards

If you are traveling internationally, youโ€™ll want to make sure you take a gluten-free translation card to communicate your dietary restrictions to your restaurant server. I recommend Equal Eats translation cards, and you can purchase physical or digital cards. Equal Eats also offers custom translation cards for those with multiple allergies.

#6: Downloaded gluten-free apps

Do some research before you leave on what restaurants and grocery stores will be in your local area, but also download some gluten-free apps in case you need them when youโ€™re in your destination. Some of my top picks are:

#7: Medications just in case

Bring your standard over-the-counter medications (Tylenol, digestive enzymes, probiotics, activated charcoal, Tums, ginger candy to settle your stomach, etc.), but also check with your doctor to find out what he or she recommends to help you recover. You also might want to consider asking your doctor for a note stating that you have celiac disease in case you need to present it to anyone who needs to be informed about your diet.

#8: Travel insurance documents

Things can happen on vacation, and if youโ€™re traveling internationally, I consider travel insurance a must-have. While you might have medical insurance already, most domestic health insurance policies do not provide coverage outside of your home country.

Many people donโ€™t realize that most travel insurance companies offer 24/7 assistance, too. So if you get sick while youโ€™re away and need to find a local doctor or hospital, you can call their 1-800 number, and they can help you with this process. We recommend Travel Insured International.

By taking some extra time to plan what to pack, you can have a more stress-free vacation. When you get back, if there are items you wish you wouldโ€™ve brought, make a note for your next trip!

Should You Tip at an All-Inclusive Resort?

Planning a vacation at an all-inclusive resort? While most meals, drinks, and activities are included, one question that comes up oftenโ€”especially for gluten-free travelersโ€”is: Should I tip? The answer isnโ€™t always straightforward, as tipping customs can vary by resort and destination. In this post, Iโ€™ll walk you through when and how to tip, how much cash to bring, and why tipping can make a big differenceโ€”particularly when staff go out of their way to ensure your meals are safe and your experience is unforgettable.

This is especially important in destinations like Mexico, where the minimum wage is lowโ€”just 278.80 MXN (about $13 USD) for an entire 8-hour workdayโ€”tips can make a big difference. Even a few dollars can significantly impact someoneโ€™s livelihood and often lead to even better service.

Is tipping included at all-inclusive resorts?

While tipping isnโ€™t always required at all-inclusive resorts, itโ€™s often appreciated, especially when someone goes the extra mile to make your stay safe and comfortable. This is especially true for gluten-free travelers, where personalized service can make all the difference in your dining experience and vacation.

Important Note: Some resorts, like Sandals and Beaches Resorts, have a strict no-tipping policy (except for spa staff and butlers). Be sure to check your resortโ€™s guidelines in advance.

Who should you tip at an all-inclusive resort?

Tipping can encourage continued excellent service throughout your stay. While you donโ€™t need to tip after every meal or drink, it's expected to tip:

  • Restaurant Servers

  • Beach / Poolside Servers

  • Spa Services

  • Transfer Drivers

  • Tour / Excursion Guides

How much cash should you bring?

A good rule of thumb is to carry $150โ€“$300 USD in small bills to make tipping simple and convenient. U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout the Caribbean and Mexico, though exchanging some cash for pesos in Mexico is always a thoughtful gesture and often appreciated.

I typically recommend bringing $100 in $1s, $100 in $5s, and $100 in $10s. Make sure your bills are clean and undamagedโ€”bills with tears, markings, or excessive wear may be refused.

Recommended Tipping Amounts

DINING

  • Buffet Meals Servers: $1โ€“$2 per table
(especially if they ensure you have safe gluten-free options from the kitchen)

  • Buffet Station Chefs: $1
(especially if they prepare a custom gluten-free dish for you)

  • ร€ la Carte Meal Servers: $5-$10 per couple

  • Bartenders: $1โ€“$2 per round
Insider Tip: Stick with the same bartender throughout your tripโ€”theyโ€™ll get to know your preferences (including gluten-free drink requests) and often provide even better service.

When you travel with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, dining out can feel risky. But a little gratitude can go a long way. Tipping the staff who take care of your gluten-free needs encourages careful, attentive service throughout your stay.

Whether itโ€™s a server double-checking your order, a chef preparing your food separately, or buffet staff retrieving safe items from the kitchen, these small acts of care can mean the difference between getting sick and an amazing vacation experience. Recognizing their effort with a tip not only shows appreciation, but it also motivates them to continue prioritizing your safety.

SERVICE

  • Concierge: $5โ€“$10, depending on your usage

  • Room service: $5โ€“$10 depending on complexity and time of day

  • Housekeeping: $2 per day (leave on pillow)
Insider Tip: Want more bottled water or wine instead of soda in your fridge? Leave a $2โ€“$5 tip with a written request.

TRANSPORTATION

  • Bag Attendants: $1 per bag or per room visit

  • Private Transfer Drivers: $5โ€“$10 per person, depending on distance

  • Bus Drivers: $1โ€“$2 per couple

  • Tour / Excursion Guides: $5 to $10 per person. For smaller groups or longer tours, you can consider tipping 10% to 20% of the total tour cost.

By tipping those who go the extra mile, youโ€™re more likely to receive consistent, high-quality service, making your trip less stressful and more enjoyable. Youโ€™ll spend less time worrying about cross-contact and more time relaxing.

The takeaway: If someone helps you eat safely, tip themโ€”your stomach (and peace of mind) will thank you.

Gluten-Free in the City of Light: My Parisian Journey

Paris traveling with celiac disease - Gluten-free Vacations

Blog by: Noreen Wheeler

Bien Sรปr (Of course)! Last summer, my daughters and I travelled to Paris. It was amazing! My daughter had dreamed of visiting Paris for years, so we packed in as much sightseeing as possible. It was truly unforgettable.

Of course, a great deal of planning went into our trip. Once we mapped out the sights we wanted to see, I began researching safe dining options โ€” especially important because my youngest daughter and I both have celiac disease. We cannot have gluten or cross-contact with gluten so researching restaurants is always a must!

Paris wasnโ€™t only about the food, though it was a highlight! Paris is known as โ€œthe city of love,โ€ and there is something magical about it. Itโ€™s hard to explain. The architecture is beautiful, the streets have an old-world charm, and the atmosphere makes it unforgettable.

We also found the people to be kind and welcoming. I highly recommend learning a few basic French phrases before you go. Of course, โ€œsans glutenโ€ will be very important for those of us who cannot eat gluten. But even simple gestures, like smiling and saying โ€œbonjour,โ€ can go a long way. Even if your French isnโ€™t perfect, Parisians generally appreciate the effort. Many will even ask if youโ€™d prefer to continue to speak in French or switch to Englishโ€”either way, itโ€™s a nice way to connect and show a bit of respect for the culture.

If Paris is on your travel list, take a look below for some of my favorite things to do and the best gluten-free spots we discovered along the way!

My Favorite Things to Do in Paris

If I had to choose just five must-see spots in Paris, hereโ€™s where Iโ€™d start:

Louvre Museum

1. The Louvre Museum
This world-famous museum is an absolute must. Donโ€™t go just for the Mona Lisaโ€”thereโ€™s so much more to see. Iโ€™ve visited a few times with tours, but I never felt like I had enough time to stroll through the museum and see all the great artwork. If you can, set aside a few hours to wander through on your ownโ€”you wonโ€™t regret it.

2. The Eiffel Tower
You canโ€™t visit Paris without seeing the Eiffel Tower. If you decide to take the elevator to the top, be preparedโ€”it can get very crowded, especially during peak tourist season. I recommend reading up on the towerโ€™s history beforehand. A great way to learn about Parisian history is through Edward Rutherfurdโ€™s Paris: The Novel. Though itโ€™s historical fiction, it is based on real events and is very engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

3. Montmartre & Sacrรฉ-Cล“ur Basilica
Perched high above the city, the Sacrรฉ-Cล“ur Basilica is beautiful both inside and out. The view of Paris from the steps is breathtaking. Be sure to give yourself time to wander through Montmartreโ€™s streetsโ€”this artistic neighborhood is full of life. You can watch street artists as they bring their art to life. Which is all part of the experience!

4. The Catacombs of Paris
This is a very unique experience. About 65 feet below the ground lie the remains of several million Parisians. Tickets often sell out, so itโ€™s best to book in advance. Created in the late 1700s to address overcrowded cemeteries and public health concerns, the city began moving bodies from cemeteries in Paris to the catacombs. At the time, the catacombs were outside the city. While it might seem dark to some, I found the history behind this underground ossuary truly fascinating.

5. Bateaux Mouches River Cruise
One of the most relaxing ways to take in Paris is by boat. This cruise along the Seine offers views of many of the cityโ€™s most iconic landmarks. If you can, go in the eveningโ€”watching the city lights reflect on the water is so relaxing. Itโ€™s a great way to end a busy day of exploring.

My Favorite Restaurants for Gluten-Free Dining

One of the highlights of our trip was discovering Copains, a fully gluten-free bakery with several locations around the city. Luckily, our hotel was only a few blocks from one of their stores. Their pastries are incredibleโ€”the best Iโ€™ve had since my celiac diagnosis in 2013. They are flaky, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Each morning, we choose three different pastries to share, and never found anything we didnโ€™t like. As someone who is often underwhelmed by gluten-free baked goods at home, this was a real treat.

Photos by Noreen Wheeler

We also enjoyed some fantastic meals at a few restaurants around the city. A few of our favorites included Le Poulbot, located in Montmartre, and two completely gluten-free restaurants near the Eiffel Towerโ€”Su Misura and Tasca. Each place offered delicious food.

Suprรชme de Poulet au Citron et Lรฉgumes Grillรฉs - Chicken Supreme with Lemon & Grilled Vegetables - from Su Misura

What would I do differently?

Stay longer!  We thoroughly enjoyed Paris, and next time, Iโ€™d plan for a longer stay. There were still so many places I wanted to explore, like the Musรฉe dโ€™Orsay, which we didnโ€™t have time to visit on this trip.

As for Versailles, Iโ€™m not sure Iโ€™d go again. While the palace is beautiful and holds a great deal of history, the experience was not as captivating as I thought it would be. Itโ€™s about a 30โ€“40-minute train ride from the city. We found it to be very overcrowded, which made it difficult to enjoy. If you have never been, itโ€™s worth seeingโ€”but only if you can go in the off-season to avoid the crowds.

Traveling to Paris with celiac disease might seem daunting at first, but with planning, itโ€™s absolutely possible.  From unforgettable sights to mouthwatering gluten-free pastries, our trip proved that you donโ€™t have to sacrifice taste or adventure while staying safe. Paris was very welcoming, and Iโ€™m already thinking about our next visit.

Whether youโ€™re planning your first trip or returning to this magical city, know that gluten-free travel in Paris is possible! Bon voyage et bon appรฉtit!

6 Reasons Why We Love AmaWaterways

As travel advisors, our goal is to curate exceptional experiences for our clients, and AmaWaterways never fails to deliver. Whether you're an experienced cruiser or embarking on your first river journey, AmaWaterways is a standout choice. Even better, they excel at accommodating dietary restrictions, making them an ideal option for travelers with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. Here are the top 6 reasons why we love cruising with AmaWaterways!

1. Expansive Comfort

One of the best things about AmaWaterways is the open, relaxed feel of the ship. Unlike larger cruise lines, AmaWaterwaysโ€™ ships are designed with comfort in mind, accommodating an average of just 156 guests. Spacious staterooms, uncrowded common areas, and panoramic views create a feeling of ease and privacy, so you can unwind at your own pace without the bustle of large crowds.

The extraordinary AmaMagna stands out with the largest and most luxurious suites on the Danube River. Expansive open-air Sun Decks offer even more to enjoy, including a walking track, pool or whirlpool (both available on AmaMagna), a bar, a comfortable sitting area, and plenty of room for their complimentary Wellness Programโ€™s host-led fitness classes.

Many ships have large balcony staterooms as well. AmaMagna has stunning suites, complete with full balconies, range from 355 to 710 square feet.

2. Unmatched Personal Service

What really sets AmaWaterways apart is their attentive, thoughtful service. The crew members go out of their way to get to know you and make your experience personal and special. From remembering your name to anticipating your preferences, their service feels genuine and makes your journey that much more enjoyable.

โ€œFrom the moment I boarded, the staff assured me they understood my gluten-free needs. They checked in regularly, from meals to excursions, to make sure I felt comfortable and safe. It was such a relief knowing I was taken care of."
- Gluten-free Traveler

3. All-Inclusive Shore Excursions for Every Traveler

Each destination offers a variety of excursions tailored to different interests and energy levels, all included in your fare. Love to explore by bike? Theyโ€™ve got it. Prefer a gentle walking tour with a local guide? No problem. From historic city tours to scenic hikes and cultural food tastings, youโ€™ll find an adventure that suits you โ€” and makes each stop feel like a meaningful experience, not just a quick visit.

One of the many perks of sailing with AmaWaterways is that the ships dock right in the heart of each destination. Unlike ocean cruises, which often require long transfers from the port to the main city, smaller river ships can pull right up to central locations in most towns and cities. For example, In Europe, the ship docks in the heart of Vienna, right on the edge of Budapest's riverside and within walking distance of Strasbourg's enchanting Old Town. This allows you to explore at your own pace.

4. Award-Winning Culinary Experiences, Perfect for Gluten-Free Travelers

Dining on AmaWaterways is a standout experience, with menus inspired by each region you visit. And for gluten-free travelers, AmaWaterways does an incredible job at making sure you can dine with confidence. One gluten-free traveler shared, โ€œEvery meal was a delight, and I never had to worry about what I was eatingโ€”the staff took such care.โ€

AmaWaterwaysโ€™ attention to detail extends to shore excursions, too. If an excursion includes a food experience, like a wine and cheese tasting or a cooking demo, the crew will work ahead to provide safe, gluten-free alternatives so you donโ€™t miss a thing. And onboard, if you have questions or special requests, the chefs are happy to discuss your options directly.

6. Culturally Rich Destinations

AmaWaterways cruises through some of the worldโ€™s most beautiful and culturally rich regions, including Europe, Asia, and Africa, with thoughtfully crafted itineraries that highlight both famous landmarks and hidden treasures.

In Europe, you can explore the fairytale-like castles of The Rhine River Cruise, visit Monetโ€™s gardens in Giverny and the historic shores of Normandy on The Seine River France Cruise, or discover Portugalโ€™s stunning wine country on The Douro River Cruise, complete with authentic Fado music.

For those drawn to Southeast Asia, The Mekong River Cruise takes you deep into the heart of Vietnam and Cambodia. This journey includes vibrant floating markets, ancient temples like Angkor Wat, and close-up encounters with local village life.

AmaWaterways also offers unforgettable experiences beyond Europe and Asia. The Nile River Cruise explores Egyptโ€™s ancient wonders, including Luxor, Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, and the Great Pyramids. And in Africa, The Chobe River Cruise in Botswana combines a river cruise with land-based game reserves giving you a chance to see Africa's iconic wildlife.

From European landmarks to Southeast Asiaโ€™s colorful markets and Africaโ€™s wild savannahs, AmaWaterwaysโ€™ itineraries offer an immersive, expertly small-group guided experience making it easy to explore the rich history and culture of any destination. Reaching these far-reaching destinations means you can explore parts of the world that might otherwise be challenging to navigate on your own while ensuring the added comfort of consistent, worry-free gluten-free dining throughout your journey.

Insider Tips for Exploring Europe Gluten-Free

Food is an essential part of any travel experience, but following a strict gluten-free diet can make things a bit more complex. Imagine visiting Paris without savoring a buttery croissant or Rome without a freshly baked pizza? Fortunately, with some careful planning, it's possible to explore almost any destination in Europe without worrying about gluten. Traveling gluten-free is all about taking steps to create a safety net that allows you to enjoy the experience with confidence.

If you are just starting your trip planning, here are my 10 top travel tips for exploring Europe as a gluten-free traveler.

#1 - Plan With an Expert

As a travel advisor who specializes in travel to Europe for those who have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, I spend a significant amount of time researching destinations, restaurants, etc. When you work with me, youโ€™ll get a proposal with a detailed itinerary, recommended excursion, travel insurance quotes, transportation options, and more. I help take the stress out of planning for gluten-free travelers and am available to answer any questions that you might have.

See more information on our European vacation planning packages.

#2 - Research Online Gluten-free Reviews

Dive into resources like Find Me Gluten Free, TripAdvisor, and local gluten-free blogs to uncover the best dining options.

Use online reviews as a guide, but donโ€™t rely solely on them. Always reach out to restaurants directly to confirm that they can accommodate your needs. Each dining experience can vary, so it's best to verify yourself. Make sure to look for the most recent reviews or posts to ensure the information is up-to-date.

Additional Tip: Join local gluten-free Facebook groups for real-time advice and recommendations from fellow travelers. Any Celiac support group, like Coeliacs Eat Abroad, Celiac Travel, and Celiac Travel Group are great resources.

#3 - Leverage Europe's Awareness of Celiac Disease

Many European countries are well-versed in serving those with celiac disease. Italy, for example, has the Italian Coeliac Association (AIC), which has a list of gluten-free accredited restaurants. Plenty of options for gluten-free pizza and pasta! Research each destinationโ€™s awareness of celiac disease and local cuisine.

#4 - Carry a Gluten-Free Translation Card

When language barriers arise, a translated gluten-free restaurant card can clearly communicate your needs to restaurant staff. Itโ€™s a handy way to ensure that your dietary requirements are understood. We recommend Equal Eats translations cards.
Additional Tip: Print multiple copies or purchase multiple plastic cards in case you lose one or want to give them to different servers.

#5 - Use Google Translate

Download Google Translate before you leave for your trip. The app is user-friendly, offering a conversation feature that allows you to speak in English and instantly translate your words into the local language. It also includes a camera function, enabling you to scan labels or menus, translating text directly from the original language into your preferred language.
Additional tip: Download the language pack for your destination before you depart so you can use Google Translate offline, even when you don't have access to Wi-Fi or cellular data.

#6 - When in Doubt, Donโ€™t Eat It

If you're uncertain about a meal's safety, itโ€™s better to skip it. Getting exposed to gluten can be difficult to handle, especially when traveling. Trust your instincts and prioritize your health.

#7 - Pack a Meal for Your Flight as a Backup

While most international airlines can provide gluten-free meal options if requested in advance, we have seen many airlines forget to do this or have heard of travelers being glutened although their meal is labeled gluten-free. We always recommend requesting a gluten-free meal with your airline, but also packing a full meal as a back up plan in case your meal isnโ€™t available or you donโ€™t feel comfortable eating what is provided.
Additional Tip: When packing a full meal, please keep in mind that there is a limit on the amount of liquids you can have in your carry-on (liquids must fit inside 3.4-ounce containers that all fit into one quart-size bag).

#8 - Visit Local Grocery Stores

Knowing where the local grocery stores, especially near your hotel can help stock up on food and snacks on the go. Schรคr is a popular brand available all over Europe, which produces gluten free breads, pasta, snacks and sweets.
Additional Tip: Inquire about a mini fridge in your hotel room so you can store food.

#9 - Always Pack Gluten-free Snacks

Bringing your own snacks is a lifesaver when traveling gluten-free. Snacks help you bridge the gap between meals and prevent hunger when safe options are limited.
Additional Tip: Stock up on easy to carry items like granola bars, pretzels, nuts, etc.

#10 - Purchase Travel Insurance

Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical needs, especially if you have a serious reaction to gluten. It provides peace of mind, knowing you have support in case of emergency.
Additional Tip: Purchase your policy as soon as possible so that you are covered for pre-existing conditions. Many travel insurance companies require you to purchase a policy within a certain timeframe from your initial trip payment (some are 21 days).

Traveling gluten-free doesn't have to be stressful. With these tips, youโ€™ll be well-prepared to enjoy a delicious and safe gluten-free adventure across Europe!

If you are contemplating a Mediterranean cruise (or any European cruise), I can't recommend it enough. It's a travel experience that combines the convenience of cruising with the rich history and culture of Europe. The ships offer comfortable accommodations, delicious dining options, and excellent entertainment.

Bon Voyage!

9 Reasons You Should Use a Gluten-free Travel Agent for Your Next Trip

I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s a single person that doesnโ€™t get excited about planning a vacation. Itโ€™s a fun and relaxing experience that helps you take a break from your daily obligations and enjoy a faraway destination. But, for people dealing with food allergies and gluten intolerance, planning a trip is harder than it seems. Simply trying to choose a destination that will align with their diet requirements is very stressful. And this is just one of the reasons why you need to use a travel agent / advisor for your next trip (thatโ€™s me!).

I am here to tell you that you donโ€™t have to do this on your own. Getting help from a travel advisor, particularly one specializing in organizing vacations for people who suffer from food allergies or celiac disease, will be very helpful for you. And if youโ€™re interested to discover more than just a single reason why you should hire one, take a look at the list I provided below.

1. Travel Advisors Have Experienced It All

Being one of those people, I can say that we know all the ins and outs of travel planning. Thanks to their year-long experience with helping people plan their dream vacation, advisors can suggest everything from great resorts to visit-worthy attractions. They also make sure to pick those resorts that understand the danger of cross-contact and that are sure about the meals they deliver. This all promises youโ€™ll have a vacation of a lifetime.

Moreover, every travel agent has something they specialize in. And since my area of expertise is gluten-free vacations, I often travel to inspect different resorts and destinations and also talk with the staff and try various gluten-free meals. For example, I visited a total of 21 resorts during my trip to Jamaica, doing detailed site inspections over the course of 5 days. I can say that what we do can be quite exhaustive, but itโ€™s the only way to ensure you get first-hand experience. And I am honored to be the one that can promise you complete safety and satisfaction!

2. Saves You Time

Another reason to use a travel agent when planning your next trip is that they will save you time. You just need to rely on their skill and knowledge to plan your whole trip - from resorts and flights to numerous activities. This means that you wonโ€™t have to spend much of your valuable time planning and organizing everything because youโ€™ll have an expert to do it for you.

3. Saves You From Stress

If youโ€™re still asking yourself, โ€œShould I use a travel agent?โ€, hear this: instead of stressing about your itinerary and budget, they will organize everything for you. This will reduce the amount of stress youโ€™ll experience if you have to organize everything by yourself. And hiring them will assure you that every aspect is well-taken care of, which means that you get to enjoy your vacation completely.

4. Provides Personalized Service

Is there a better reason to use a travel agent than the fact theyโ€™ll give you the most personalized service ever? This means theyโ€™ll work hard to design an itinerary that meets your needs. So, whether youโ€™re looking for a resort fit for a family or a place where you can spend some relaxing time as a couple, they got you. More importantly, if you have specific dietary needs that must be met, you can rest assured that they will be.

5. Provides Expert Recommendations

Online booking often makes things more confusing than they should be. There is sometimes too much or too little information for you to be able to decide whether a resort is the right pick for you or not. But since a travel agent is an expert in the field, they can suggest the best options and give you expert insight that will be really useful for your travel.

6. Helps You Choose the Best Destination

Maybe you already have an idea about where youโ€™d want to go for your next vacation, but with so many options out there, it can be hard to come up with a final decision. One of the greatest reasons to use a travel agent is because theyโ€™ll give you valuable advice on both location and resorts. Since every place has its pros and cons, you can really benefit from their knowledge to suggest which one will work the best for you.

7. They Can Deal With Unexpected Situations

No plan works flawlessly every time, and this is true for travel plans, too. From flight delays and changeable weather to lost luggage and whatnot, your advisor can help you overcome these all. If something goes wrong, theyโ€™ll assist you in making any unnecessary itinerary changes.

8. Books Everything For You

Not only will your agent suggest the best destination, but they can also book the accommodation, airfare, transportation, excursions, etc. They will even provide their recommendations for travel insurance. This saves you time, stress, and unnecessary hassle, as they will take care of all the details on your behalf. In addition, they often have connections with the resort staff and various tour companies, allowing them to get better deals or upgrades. When you decide to use a travel agent, all thatโ€™s left to do is be as excited as you can about your upcoming adventure!

9. Saves You Money

Speaking of great deals, one of the answers to โ€œWhy should I use a travel agent?โ€ is that they will help you save money. Such a person will provide you with the right connections, which can ultimately make your trip significantly cheaper than if youโ€™d planned it on your own. A travel advisor has exclusive access to offers and promotions, and they can also advise you on the best time to book your travel, as well.

I think I have been clear enough with this list of reasons why your decision to use a travel agent for your next trip will probably be the best one you can make. From suggesting destinations to picking resorts that meet your diet requirements, such an expert will relieve you from all the hassle of planning a vacation on your own.

Exploring the Mediterranean with Royal Caribbean

I've had quite a few clients recently ask me about my experience on a Mediterranean cruise I took a few years ago with Royal Caribbean. As someone who enjoys cruising in general, I must say that a Mediterranean cruise takes things to an entirely different level compared to the Caribbean. The cuisine, the culture, and Europeโ€™s myriad of historic ports make it an unforgettable adventure. Plus, if you have celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, Royal Caribbean is able to provide great options so that you can have a stress-free trip.

Despite the elevated experience, it's still a remarkable bargain when you consider that all your meals are included, there's fantastic entertainment, and you have the opportunity to visit multiple countries in a single trip. It's truly a wonderful way to see so much of the world in a relatively short amount of time.

We traveled with a lively group of 35 friends and family members on a 7-day Mediterranean cruise on Royal Caribbeanโ€™s Rhapsody of the Seas. We set sail from Venice, with stops in Dubrovnik, Chania, and Athens, before returning to Venice.

We decided to arrive in Venice two days prior to the departure of the cruise for two main reasons:

  1. To ensure we didnโ€™t miss the start of the cruise in case of any flight delays.

  2. To have ample time to explore Venice thoroughly, knowing that by the end of the cruise, we would likely be eager to return home.

Our group of 35 visiting Dubrovnik, Croatia.

PRE-CRUISE IN VENICE, ITALY

Venice is a city that's best enjoyed leisurely, and those two days gave us the opportunity to soak in all its beauty and charm before embarking on our journey. During our stay, we had the opportunity to also visit Murano and Burano. Murano is famous for its exquisite glass making tradition. Burano, with its colorful houses, felt like stepping into a fairy tale.

GLUTEN-FREE TIP: Stop at MEA Libera Tutti, which is a gluten-free specialty grocery store and pick up cookies, snacks, etc. to have during the remainder of your trip! Make sure to check their hours ahead of time.

OUR SHIP

Rhapsody of the Seas

  • Maiden Voyage - 1997

  • Refurbished - 2012

  • Number of Decks - 12

  • Guests: 2,416 (total)

  • Restaurants: 3 complimentary and 5 specialty restaurants

I love Royal Caribbean's Rhapsody of the Seas because it has a friendly, laid-back atmosphere, even though itโ€™s an older ship. A few reasons why I love this ship is because of its small size, its ability to handle dietary restrictions, and the itineraries available.

Ship Size
Once we boarded the ship, the group went off exploring everything that Rhapsody of the Seas had to offer. I enjoyed this ship because of its smaller size, which provides a more intimate, curated adventure. We had some family members with slight mobility issues so it was no problem for them to navigate the ship. I also find that the lines to get into the shows and at the buffet are not long like the mega ships.

Gluten-free Dining
A few family members also had some dietary restrictions and cruising with Royal Caribbean provides a seamless way to manage this. The dining staff went out of their way to understand our needs and created unique meals tailored specifically to our group.

If youโ€™re gluten-free, Royal Caribbean typically offers gluten-free bread, pasta, pizza, burger buns, pancakes, and desserts. Their staff understands the importance of avoiding cross-contact, and youโ€™ll be able to order custom dishes from your servers. Note that larger ships have more restaurants, and therefore, offer more options.

  • Restaurants on Rhapsody of the Seas include:

    • Main Dining Room - a la carte breakfast and dinner

    • Windjammer Cafe - buffet

    • Park Cafe - made-to-order salads and sandwiches

    • Chops Grille - steakhouse (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

    • Giovanniโ€™s Table - Italian cuisine (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

    • Izumi - Asian cuisine (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

    • Cafe Latte-tudes - coffee shop (specialty restaurant - additional fee)

  • My gluten-free dining tips:

    • Best Service - For the best service and attention to detail, dine in the Main Dining Room or specialty restaurants when possible. They have fewer guests per server / chef than the Windjammer Cafe, so they can cater to special requests more easily.

    • Main Dining Room - Here, youโ€™ll even be able to order your meal the day prior, which will provide you with more options and reduce your wait time. For example, if you let them know a day in advance, they can usually provide gluten-free waffles or pancakes for breakfast.

    • Windjammer Cafe - When dining at the Windjammer Cafe, I recommend speaking with the maรฎtre d and they will let you know what gluten-free options are available on the buffet and what items can be prepared separately to avoid cross-contact. Many times, gluten-free bread, pasta, pizza, buns for burgers, etc. are available in the kitchen area and you can request a separate meal prepared for you.

Sign on the ship showing their dedication to providing gluten-free options.

Activities
Throughout the cruise, they had activities like sushi making classes, behind-the-scenes brunch tours, and my favorite - nightcaps at R Bar after an evening filled with exciting shows. If you have a competitive streak or want to fill a few hours with nonstop laughs, go to one of the cruise's game shows. Hosted by a hilarious emcee, these shows typically recreate popular challenges like Love & Marriage, Battle of the Sexes and Quest, an adults-only scavenger-style competition that separates the audience into teams and prompts them to work together in order to win. I definitely found out things I didn't know about my family and friends. Plus - kids will love the pools, kids clubs, rock climbing wall, arcade, movie nights, and more.

OUR PORTS OF CALL

One reason I love cruises for those with celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity, or other dietary restrictions is that passengers can enjoy safe meals for breakfast and dinner on the ship, only needing to plan lunch while in port. This makes the planning process much less stressful and allows for more freedom to explore.

GLUTEN-FREE TIPS:

  • Before you depart, download gluten-free apps for finding restaurants in your destination. If you book your vacation with our team, we will provide a list of apps specific to your destination and a list of recommended restaurants for gluten-free travelers near popular sites.

  • Carry a gluten-free translation card with you. If you book your vacation with us, we will mail you a gluten-free translation card in your document package.

Dubrovnik, Croatia
Our first stop once we set sail was Dubrovnik, Croatia. This iconic city offers a rich blend of historical charm and scenic beauty. We walked along the Ancient City Walls for breathtaking views of the city and the Adriatic Sea. We wandered through Old Town, with charming shops and beautiful architecture. For the fans out there, which we were, Dubrovnik served as the filming location for King's Landing. The tour took us to all the spots!

Chania, Greece
Our next stop was Chania, Greece. We were supposed to go to Santorini, Greece however the ship wasn't able to tender there due to the rough sea water (don't worry, I ended up going back to Santorini AND Mykonos!). We ended up staying in Chania for 2 nights which, frankly, I loved! I really enjoyed exploring this picturesque coastal town thoroughly and it is probably one of my favorite Greek islands. We ate at a few restaurants in the Venetian Harbor and strolled through Agora Market for traditional Cretan products.

Athens, Greece
Our journey continued to Athens, the capital of Greece where ancient history meets vibrant modern culture. No visit to Athens is complete without exploring the Acropolis, Parthenon, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Panathenaic Stadium, or Syntagma Square. We experienced local culture and cuisine in the Plaka District.

I loved seeing all of the sites in Athens!

Venice, Italy
Our last port before heading back to Venice was to the historic site of Olympia, Greece, known for its ancient ruins and connection to the original Olympic Games. We had a fantastic opportunity to visit a local olive-making factory. We learned about the production process, sampled various types of olive oil, and even brought home bottles as souvenirs.

If you are contemplating a Mediterranean cruise (or any European cruise), I can't recommend it enough. It's a travel experience that combines the convenience of cruising with the rich history and culture of Europe. The ships offer comfortable accommodations, delicious dining options, and excellent entertainment.

Bon Voyage!

Travel Insurance: A Must-Have for Your Vacation

Planning a trip is always exciting, but thereโ€™s one important step you should never skip: purchasing travel insurance. While it might seem like an unnecessary extra, travel insurance can save you from a world of trouble. Imagine getting sick before your trip, your flight being delayed, or your luggage getting lost. With travel insurance, youโ€™re covered and can enjoy your adventure without worry. It's a small investment for a lot of peace of mind. Hereโ€™s why travel insurance should be a non-negotiable part of your travel plans.

Who Should Purchase Travel Insurance?

Anyone traveling, whether domestically or internationally, can benefit from travel insurance. Itโ€™s especially recommended if you have the following travel plans:

  • Domestic Trips

  • International Trips

  • Multiple Trips in a Year

Top Reasons to Buy Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can cover a range of unexpected events. Here are the key areas to ensure you have covered:

  • Cancellation Protection

    • Trip Cancellation for a Covered Reason: If you need to cancel your trip due to reasons like sickness, natural disasters, or a family emergency, your travel insurance will reimburse you for non-refundable expenses.

    • Optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR): This add-on allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and still recover up to 75% of your costs. It's crucial to purchase CFAR within 10-15 days of your initial deposit.

  • Trip Interruption/Delays

    • Coverage for delayed or missed flights can save you from additional costs and inconvenience.

    • If your trip is interrupted due to illness or quarantine, insurance can cover extra expenses like extended hotel stays and meals.

  • Medical Protection

    • Domestic health insurance often doesnโ€™t cover medical expenses abroad. Travel insurance ensures you receive necessary medical care without bearing the full cost.

  • Personal Belongings

    • Coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items can save you from significant disappointment and financial loss.

  • In-Travel Support

    • Most travel insurance policies offer 24-hour emergency medical services and assistance, providing invaluable support in a foreign country.

Purchasing Travel Insurance

  • When to Buy

    • Ideally, purchase travel insurance within 10-15 days of your initial trip deposit to include CFAR coverage. However, you can still buy insurance up until your departure for medical and in-travel protection.

  • Buying Options

    • If youโ€™re working with Gluten-free Vacations, we will provide a quote for travel insurance. Alternatively, you can purchase travel insurance directly online through the link below.

  • Read Your Plan Details

    • Carefully review all terms and conditions. If you have any questions, contact your insurance provider. Understanding your policy fully can prevent unpleasant surprises.

By securing travel insurance, you ensure a smoother, stress-free trip, knowing youโ€™re protected from the unexpected. Donโ€™t leave home without it!

My Must-Have Travel Apps

Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or embarking on a month-long journey, there's an app for every step of the way. As a travel agent who specializes in planning vacations for gluten-free travelers, there are several apps that I rely on frequently. These apps help me find the best restaurants, track flights, communicate with tour guides, and more.

Download the apps below and you'll be well-equipped to travel with confidence and ease. So, pack your bags, charge your devices, and let's dive into the world of apps that every gluten-free traveler should have in their arsenal.

Gluten-free Apps

With these apps, you'll have an easier time finding gluten-free food on your travels. Several different apps are fantastic resources for finding food and restaurants on a gluten-free diet. In addition, some of the following app options also have desktop versions available online.

Find Me Gluten Free

With this app youโ€™ll have the ability to put in the location you're going to and instantly find restaurants vetted by others who are gluten-free. Rated by the safety, taste, and variety of food, reviewers can also leave a photo of their food or the restaurant's menu. Establishments that are dedicated gluten-free are marked by a green check mark. You can filter by the bakery, chains, brunch, lunch, takeout, delivery, pizza, beer, dessert, dairy-free, and kid-friendly.

In addition, the app also allows you to save restaurants and group them as you like by city. So when you're traveling, you can bookmark restaurants before you go on your gluten-free adventure! The paid app adds more features, so if you're a traveler, it's an excellent investment in finding safe gluten-free food!

Pro Tip: On the Find Me GF app, click โ€œMoreโ€ at the bottom, then โ€œAirportsโ€, and youโ€™ll see restaurant ratings for most major airports.

Find Me Gluten Free

GF Scanner

The Gluten Free Scanner allows you to scan the barcode on a product. After scanning the barcode, this app will tell you if the product is gluten-free. If the product is not found or is missing ingredients, you can contribute by leaving product feedback.

When traveling, this app is great if you are at a grocery store or the airport and arenโ€™t sure if a package item is gluten-free.

GF Scanner

GlutenDude

Gluten Dude provides a directory of 100% gluten-free restaurants and restaurants that are also gluten-free friendly. The founder vets the restaurants on the app, and new restaurants are added daily. He also has a list of gluten-free beer brands and stores that sell gluten-free beer.

For travelers, this app also offers a directory of airports with a list of every eatery at the airport and ratings on the gluten-free availability of foods.

GlutenDude

Travel Apps

WhatsApp

If youโ€™re visiting another country, WhatsApp is a MUST. WhatsApp allows you to make calls or text over wi-fi and is important when you donโ€™t have access to cell service. For those traveling to the Caribbean or Mexico, most resorts and tour / transportation companies use WhatsApp to communicate through this app.

WhatsApp

Google Translate

Google Translate is a lifesaver when you encounter languages you don't understand. You can translate text, spoken words, and even images. The conversation mode allows you to have real-time, two-way conversations with someone speaking a different language.

This app is so important for gluten-free travelers who donโ€™t speak the local languages. While in some Spanish-speaking countries you might be able to simply say โ€œsin glutenโ€, you might also need to communicate with more detail at times.

PLUS - if you use the camera feature, it can even translate food packaging!

Google Translate

Trip Plans

If you plan your next vacation with me, youโ€™ll receive a link to download the Trip Plans app. This app will allow you to view your custom itinerary that Iโ€™ll create for you, all of your trip confirmations, my tips, and more. It will even automatically update if your flight times change.

Trip Plans

Your Airlineโ€™s App

Always download you airlineโ€™s app before you depart. This will allow you to get updates on your flights, view your boarding pass, make changes, etc.

Your Resort or Cruise Lineโ€™s App

Before you depart also download the app for your resort or cruise line if available. Many resorts now have apps where you can view the resortโ€™s map, restaurant hours and menus, activity schedules, request room service, and more. For cruisers, having your cruise lines app is a must. With so many activities onboard, you wonโ€™t want to miss your favorites and their app is the best way to get information.

Traveling has never been easier thanks to these fantastic gluten-free and travel apps. Whether you're a meticulous planner or a spontaneous adventurer, these apps will make your next vacation stress-free. So, pack your bags and embark on your next adventure, knowing you have the best travel apps by your side. Bon voyage!

Have a favorite app that you donโ€™t see on my list? Please send me a note to let me know.

5 Reasons Why Traveling Should Be Your Top Priority

Are you feeling burnt out from your daily routine and need a break? Or maybe you want to explore new cultures and create lasting memories with your loved ones. Whatever your reason, traveling should be at the top of your priority list. If you need more convincing, here are my top five reasons to travel:

At one of my favorite resorts in Punta Cana enjoying Shrimp Fra Diavolo. So good!

Delicious and Gluten-Free Travel

Being gluten-free shouldn't stop you from exploring the world and trying new foods. I've worked with all-inclusive resorts and cruise lines that provide my clients with safe and delicious gluten-free meals. While traveling, you can enjoy mouth-watering pizza, tacos, pastries, and even pasta. One of the many reasons to travel is that you deserve to have a worry-free vacation without sacrificing your dietary needs.

It's an opportunity to Immerse Yourself in Different Cultures

One of the most important reasons to travel is that it helps you appreciate the diversity of our planet and broadens your understanding of different ways of life. By getting to know others better, youโ€™ll better understand the world around you โ€“ but also yourself.

Traveling Is Good for Your Health โ€“ Both Physical and Mental

Traveling is not only a great way to disconnect from our daily routines, but it can also positively impact our physical and mental well-being. When we travel, we expose ourselves to new experiences, meet new people, and see new places, all of which can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. One of the most compelling reasons to travel is the significant impact it can have on our mental health. People often report feeling more relaxed, less anxious, and more content after returning from a trip, proving that travel is not only a way to explore the world but also to take care of ourselves.

In addition to its positive impact on mental health, traveling can also benefit our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as hiking, swimming, or walking around a new city can contribute to our overall fitness levels and help us maintain a healthy weight.

Traveling Is a Great Way to Bond With Your Favorite People

Traveling with your favorite people is an excellent way to strengthen relationships and create new memories. You'll have the opportunity to experience new things and create stories you'll cherish for years. Traveling with your partner on a romantic getaway can be a great way to reconnect and deepen your understanding of each other. Family vacations with the kids can be a wonderful way to share new experiences, learn new things, and have fun together.

Traveling with friends can also be a fantastic way to connect, no matter whether you are exploring a new city or going on an adventure. To be honest, regardless of who you travel with, the experience of sharing new adventures and making memories together will strengthen your relationships and create a bond that lasts a lifetime.

You Can Cross Off Your Travel Bucket List

We all have a travel bucket list, right? Whether it's swimming with sharks or hiking the Inca Trail, traveling is the perfect opportunity to make those dreams a reality. And the more you travel, the more places you want to visit. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your next adventure!

There are countless reasons to travel, but one thing is for sure: it's a life-changing experience that should be at the top of your priority list. The benefits of traveling are endless โ€“ from expanding your horizons and enriching your experiences to bonding with loved ones.

So let's work together to plan a trip you'll treasure forever!

7 Tips for Flying Gluten-Free

I have to admit it, my least favorite part about traveling is flying. Getting to the airport on time, figuring out what to eat, etc., can all be stressful.

I travel internationally frequently (every other month) and there are a few things that I do to make my travel day less stressful. Below are my top tips for anyone flying that has celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity.

Tip #1 - Take Extra Gluten-free Snacks

Many airlines have eliminated meals and only provide them for long international flights. If youโ€™re headed to the Caribbean or Mexico, expect to have drink service and pre-packaged snack options. However, you canโ€™t guarantee that the snacks provided by your airline will be gluten-free.

Youโ€™ll need to pack your own gluten-free snacks (or even an entire meal). My favorite snacks to pack are Kind Bars, Chomp beef sticks, trail mix, gluten-free pretzels, etc.

Note the following:

  • Purchasing snacks at the airport - Most airports will have gluten-free snacks available to purchase, however, they will be much more expensive. Expect to pay 2-3 times the cost compared to purchasing snacks at your local grocery store.

  • Snacks provided by your airline - Do NOT rely on your airline to provide gluten-free food options (even if they say theyโ€™ll be available). Do NOT eat items provided by your airline unless they are packaged and labeled as gluten-free.

  • Pack more food than you think youโ€™ll need - Make sure you have enough snacks in case your flight is delayed.

  • Packing fresh fruit - Do not take fresh fruit unless you plan to consume it on the plane. Some governments donโ€™t allow travelers to bring fresh fruit or vegetables into their country because it could introduce a new pest or disease into the local environment.

  • Packing liquids - If you plan to pack any liquids in your carry-on, note the following:

    • All liquids in your carry-on must be in 3.4 oz containers or smaller and must all fit into a single clear quart size bag. Make sure it is accessible in case it needs to be checked.

    • Salad dressings, yogurt, etc. are considered liquids. You can purchase these in the airport once you are through security.

    • Most airports have water bottle filling stations. Bring an empty water bottle and fill it once you are through security.

  • Packing ice packs - You can take ice packs in your carry-on as long as they are frozen solid. Please note, you may need to bring your ice pack home in your checked luggage because you might not be able to refreeze it at your resort.

Most major airports will have gluten-free granola bars, candy, snacks, etc. available to purchase, but youโ€™ll pay more for them at the airport. At this stand in Jamaicaโ€™s MBJ airport I purchased three candy bars and it cost $12 (2-3 times the cost at the grocery store).

Tip #2 - Check Your Airport's List of Restaurants Ahead of Time

Before you depart, determine if there will be restaurant options available for you at your airport and where they are located. However, I do NOT recommend trying new foods at the airport or eating at restaurants you arenโ€™t familiar with. Being sick on a plane is a horrible feeling and isnโ€™t worth the risk of trying a new food.

Tip #3 - Pack a Carry-on

Always take a carry-on with essentials needed for your first day. If your room isnโ€™t ready, your resort will hold your luggage and youโ€™ll be able to access items in your carry-on easy and enjoy the resort.

Always pack the following:

  • Prescription Medication

  • Hand Sanitizer / Sanitizing Wipes / Masks

  • Headphones

  • Valuable Jewelry

  • Eye Mask / Ear Plugs / Neck Pillow

  • Bathing Suit / Change of Clothes

  • Snacks (extra Gluten-free Snacks!!!)

  • Pen & Paper

  • Glasses / Sunglasses

  • Emergency Contact Info

  • Magazines / Books

Tip #4 - Arrive Early

TSA recommends getting to the airport 3 hours prior to departure for international flights and 2 hours prior to departure for domestic flights. Donโ€™t start your trip by being stressed - get to the airport early!

A look back at that time I arrived at the airport and realized that all of the travel advisors I was traveling with also packed jean jackets. Lol!

Tip #5 - Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Getting TSA PreCheck and / or Global Entry can make your travel day much less stressful! It also means that you wonโ€™t have to take all of your liquid snacks out of your luggage and have them scanned separately.

TSA PreCheck - departures from US airports

  • If you fly frequently, I highly recommend getting TSA PreCheck, which is for departures from US airports. It allows you to have a shorter wait in security lines and you wonโ€™t need to remove your shoes, belt, laptop, liquids, and jacket.

  • To qualify, you must apply online and schedule an appointment at an enrollment center near you. The entire process is easy, however, appointments can be difficult to get and you might need to schedule a few months in advance. At your appointment they will take your fingerprints, scan your passport, etc. (take less than 5 minutes!).

  • Cost: $78 for 5 years

Global Entry - entering US airports from international flights

  • Global Entry provides a reduced wait time at Customs when entering the US from an international flight. It also includes TSA PreCheck and I highly recommend this for anyone that travels internationally.

  • To qualify, you must also apply online and schedule an appointment at an enrollment office.

  • Cost: $100 for 5 years and also includes TSA PreCheck

My pick - get Global Entry. For only $22 more you can get TSA PreCheck AND Global Entry.

To choose the best program for you and to apply, go to https://ttp.cbp.dhs.gov/.

Tip #6 - Reserve a Gluten-free Meal

This tip is only for those flying on a long international flight (800+ miles). Some airlines will still provide meals on these longer flights and you can request a gluten-free meal. Simply contact your airline immediately after booking to notify them, call again 48 hours prior to departure, and confirm again with a ticket agent at the airport. Once you receive your meal, confirm again that it is gluten-free.

Note, gluten-free meals are NOT guaranteed. Even if you request a meal and the airline says that they can provide one, do not assume you will get a gluten-free meal and always pack your own food just in case.

Personally, I donโ€™t try new foods prior to or during a flight. To me, there isnโ€™t anything worse than being sick on a plane. I recently even had a friend travel with a major airline, was given a meal labeled โ€œgluten-freeโ€, was glutened, and was sick during the first 24 hours of her trip. Not worth it to me!

Tip #7 - Flying Home

If you are departing from the the Caribbean or Mexico, know that many smaller airports don't have a lot of dining options. Donโ€™t plan for your departure airport to have gluten-free hot meals available, but most will have snacks or candy.

ALWAYS plan to eat before you leave your resort and bring your own snacks. Some resorts will even pack you a meal to-go if you ask. Just make sure your to-go meal doesnโ€™t exceed the amount of liquids allowed through security.

Although flying can be stressful for those with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, you can safely fly as long as you are prepared. I hope these tips will help you on future travels!

Why Iโ€™m Gluten-free

โ€œWhy are you gluten-free?โ€
Itโ€™s one of the questions I get asked all the time. And if youโ€™re already gluten-free, you probably knowโ€”itโ€™s usually not a choice.

For me, going gluten-free completely changed my life.

In 2018, I was diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoidosis, a rare inflammatory disease that affected my lungs. I was dealing with shortness of breath, constant fatigue, and a string of strange symptoms that would come and go without warning. I felt like my body was spiraling, and nothing was in my control.

My doctors recommended long-term prednisone, but something in me hesitated. I wasnโ€™t ready to rely on medication without exploring other options. Thatโ€™s when I began researching ways to reduce inflammation naturally. With the guidance of a functional medicine doctor, I started a strict elimination dietโ€”cutting out gluten, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol and focusing only on whole foods.

It was hard.

When one of my doctors first suggested giving up gluten and switching to whole foods, I broke down in her office. I loved foodโ€”especially dining out, socializing, and savoring pizza, tacos, pasta, and pastries. Honestly, I couldnโ€™t imagine my life without them.

But thankfully, that decision turned out to be life-changing.

Gradually, the granulomas in my lungs disappeared. My energy came back. I started to feel like me again. I never needed to take prednisone, and today, Iโ€™m considered in remission.

Over time, Iโ€™ve been able to reintroduce some things into my life (hello, coffee!), but Iโ€™ve stayed 100% gluten-free. I feel my best this way, and I canโ€™t imagine ever going back.

Enjoying gluten-free Shrimp Fra Diavolo in Punta Cana!

Do I miss gluten?

Not really. Iโ€™ve found so many amazing substitutes that satisfy my cravings.

But what I do miss? Convenience. I miss being able to grab a slice of pizza or a soft pretzel when Iโ€™m on the go without thinking twice.

Why did I start Gluten-free Vacations?

When I first started eating gluten-free, I was self-conscious every time I ordered at a restaurant. I felt like a burden. That experience opened my eyes to how hard it can be to travel and eat out with dietary restrictions.

In 2021, I launched Gluten-free Vacations to help other gluten-free travelers. The good news? There are incredible resorts that truly understand gluten-free travelโ€”and yes, they even have indulgent options that are safe and delicious.

About 95% of my clients have celiac disease, but Iโ€™m here to support anyone avoiding gluten or managing food allergies. If thatโ€™s you, youโ€™re not aloneโ€”and Iโ€™m here to help you travel confidently, deliciously, and safely.

How I Visited 21 Resorts in Jamaica

Last week, I completed site inspections at 21 resorts throughout Jamaica. Yes, it was as crazy as it sounds! Over the course of 5 nights, I stayed at 4 different resorts and visited properties in Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.

You might be wondering: What exactly are site inspections? What do I look for when I visit resorts? And whatโ€™s my schedule like during these trips? Let me take you behind the scenes to explain why site inspections are so important for travel advisors and, ultimately, for youโ€”the traveler.

What are site inspections?

Site inspections are guided tours that allow travel advisors to visit resorts, explore their amenities, and meet with the management team. These visits are essential because they provide firsthand experience and insight that simply canโ€™t be captured online.

For me, site inspections are all about ensuring that I can confidently recommend resorts to my clients based on their unique needs. Theyโ€™re a crucial part of my job as a travel advisor.

Why are site inspections important?

Even the most luxurious resort can evolve over time. Thatโ€™s why I revisit resorts, even those Iโ€™ve been to before, to check for updates, improvements, or changes.

When youโ€™re investing in a vacation, you want confidence in the recommendation, whether itโ€™s about the quality of the rooms, the dining experience, or the overall atmosphere. Site inspections help me ensure that every detail is up to par.

What do I look for on site inspections?

Here are some of the key factors I evaluate:

  • Cleanliness: This is a BIG one for me. Iโ€™ve found that resorts with excellent cleanliness standards are often better at accommodating dietary restrictions like celiac disease and food allergies.

  • Maintenance: Is the property well-kept? I check for ongoing upkeep like fresh paint, replaced furnishings, and well-maintained grounds. Photos online can sometimes be misleading.

  • Vibe: Each resort has its own atmosphereโ€”some are perfect for a quiet retreat, while others cater to a lively crowd.

  • Staff: Especially when it comes to food and drink service, I assess how well-trained staff are in handling dietary restrictions.

  • Dining: I pay close attention to the variety and quality of dining options, including how they manage dietary needs.

  • Drinks: I always keep an eye out for gluten-free drink options like Titoโ€™s vodka.

Taking a quick break in Negril. Love the crystal clear water!

Are site inspections like a vacation?

Not at all! While I get to visit beautiful properties, relaxing by the pool or beach is rare.

For example, on this trip, my days started at 6 AM to capture photos of the resort before guests were up and about. Then Iโ€™d spend the day touring multiple resorts, followed by dinner with my team or resort staff. By the time I returned to my room, it was time to catch up on emails for my clients.

Although these trips are demanding, I canโ€™t complain. I love my job, and seeing the world beats sitting in an office in Maryland any day.

Do I rate resorts?

Absolutelyโ€”and Iโ€™m very selective.

Of the 21 resorts I visited in Jamaica, I would only recommend 7 for travelers with celiac disease, gluten sensitivities, or other food allergies. Cleanliness, staff training, and dining options are critical factors in determining whether a resort meets my standards.

Enjoying some time with my team! I am affiliated with Shoreline Destinations, which provides opportunities to do site inspections and I get to work with an incredible group of advisors.

Which resorts would I recommend?

It depends on your preferences and budget! Jamaica offers an incredible variety of resorts, from family-friendly options to boutique luxury retreats for couples. If youโ€™re considering a trip to Jamaica, Iโ€™d love to help you find the perfect resort for your needs.

If youโ€™re planning a vacation to Jamaicaโ€”or anywhere in the Caribbeanโ€”let me take the stress out of the planning process. Iโ€™ll help you choose the ideal resort for your dream getaway.

8 Tips for Cruising Gluten-free

If you have celiac disease, a gluten sensitivity, or wheat allergy, you might be worried or anxious about cruising. Thankfully, many cruise lines have a wide-range of gluten-free offerings, dedicated preparation areas, and additional training for staff. However, all of the gluten-free options available to you might not be on the menus or on display in buffet areas.

If youโ€™re planning to cruise, follow the tips below on how to have an amazing gluten-free cruise vacation.

#1 - Notify Your Cruise Line

Notifying your cruise line that you have celiac disease or are gluten-free should be done before your boarding date. It gives the ship notice of how many people will need gluten-free items and the ability to order larger quantities of gluten-free foods to have on hand. Many cruise lines offer bread, pizza, pasta, etc.

If you book your cruise through me, Iโ€™ll take care of this step for you.

#2 - Navigate Restaurants

  • Main Dining Room - Once you board the ship and are settled, head to your main dining room and ask to speak to the maรฎtre d'. Explain that you are gluten-free and then ask what options are available. Many maรฎtre d's will ask you to place your order the day before. Gluten-free foods are prepared at a separate station and giving the staff notice allows them to make sure they have the right ingredients.

  • Specialty Dining Restaurants - If you plan to go to a specialty dining restaurant, meet with the maรฎtre d' the night before to preorder your meal.

  • Buffets - Many cruise ships will have a gluten-free station or will have foods labeled that are gluten-free. Note, MANY additional gluten-free foods might not be displayed in buffet areas. During your first time at a buffet restaurant, ask the maรฎtre d' what additional items are available. They'll often have bread, pasta, pizza, etc. all prepared in dedicated areas.

  • Coffee Shops - Some ships will have gluten-free pastries in their coffee shops. Make sure these items are stored separately from other pastries and ask the staff if there is any chance of cross-contact.

A few of my favorite gluten-free foods on the Celebrity Summit.

#3 - Know Where to Dine

You'll find the best service and attention to detail is at specialty restaurants and in the main dining room. These areas have a lower server/chef to passenger ratio than the buffet restaurants and can create more custom dishes. For example, many main dining rooms can prepare gluten-free waffles or pancakes if you let them know the day before.

#4 - Make Friends!

Most maรฎtre d's and servers will want to make sure you have a great experience. Make sure to introduce yourself to the maรฎtre d' wherever you dine during the first 1-2 days. The staff has access to all of the kitchens and are usually more than happy to get you a special food if needed.

Celebrity Cruises Summit Gluten-free

My first day on the Celebrity Summit I asked Serkan if a dish was gluten-free and he immediately called the chef (and it was!). For the remainder of my cruise he was always a friendly face checking in on me.

Celebrity Cruises Summit Gluten-free

Ashly on Celebrity Summit was notified by the chef at the pizza station that I ordered a gluten-free pizza. Once he knew I was gluten-free, he also checked on me when I dined at Oceanview Cafรฉ.

#5 - Take Ziploc Bags

Many cruise ships offer gluten-free muffins or pastries. Grab a few extra and store them in Ziploc bags in your stateroom. They can come in handy when you need a late night snack.

#6 - Pack Snacks

Although your cruise ship will always have gluten-free items available, pack some convenient snacks that you can take into port or on excursions. Most excursions won't have gluten-free items so make sure you eat on the ship before you depart and take snacks with you.

#7 - Know Your Alcohol

If you plan to order alcoholic drinks, please make sure your server or bartender knows you are gluten-free. Most wines are gluten-free (be wary of wines that contain added flavorings) and you might also consider drinks with brandy, rum, tequila, or gluten-free vodka.

#8 - Take Medications

Always pack any medications you might need in case you are glutened. If needed, you can always speak with the staff in the onboard medical facility.

Considering booking at cruise?

Book your next cruise with me and I help you find the perfect stateroom, provide detailed information on your cruise, help plan all of your excursions, and more!

Meet Gluten-free Blogger Sharon McCaskill

Last year I had the chance to get to know Sharon McCaskill and was blown away by her story.

In 2012 she married her husband Tyler, who has Celiac disease, and decided to learn about all of the foods he could and couldnโ€™t eat. But, she didnโ€™t stop thereโ€ฆ

Next, she created the blog The Helpful GF to provide gluten-free resources to others, which is now full of recipes, reviews, and guides. Sharon also decided to pursue a Masters in Nutrition and Dietetics to become a Registered Dietitian.

Wow! Itโ€™s crazy to think about how Sharon simply started learning about Celiac disease and has turned it into a career of helping others through her blog and as a dietitian. (Sharon, thank you for all you do to help the gluten-free community!!)

Check out my interview with Sharon to get her advice and to find out what her favorite vacation spot is.

Sharon McCaskill

Sharon McCaskill is a registered dietitian nutritionist who specializes in celiac disease and gluten-related disorders. She runs a virtual private practice, Sharon McCaskill Nutrition, offering personalized nutrition counseling in over 10 states. 1. Why did you decide to start The Helpful GF?

My husband has Refractory Celiac Disease, and as people we knew would need to transition to gluten-free they would all come ask us for advice. I decided to start The Helpful GF back in spring 2018 because honestly, I thought it would be easier to point friends to it and say 'do this' or 'this is what we eat.'  I started it as a hobby and didn't really expect it to turn into a business.

2. We know that traveling while gluten-free can be tough, what advice do you have for other gluten-free travelers?

Traveling gluten-free can be so hard-- but I'm so thankful it's better today than it was 10 years ago! I think the biggest thing is to plan ahead.  Before you book tickets or a hotel, investigate gluten-free options available and make a plan. Don't leave it to chance or wing it, you'll likely be disappointed.

3. Are there any items you recommend that gluten-free travelers take with them?

All the snacks!  But seriously though, be sure while traveling you have packed shelf-stable gluten-free snacks. It can be tricky to find options at airports/train stations/rest stops (and if you do, they are likely way overpriced). You also want to be sure that you bring over the counter medicine (like Imodium and ibuprofen) in the unfortunate case you get 'glutenedโ€™.

4. Whatโ€™s your favorite vacation spot that you would recommend to gluten-free travelers?

Honestly, if traveling with your family, Disney is an amazing option. Pretty much every food location at Disney understands how to take care of allergies and dietary restrictions. Even the ice cream shop went the extra step. When I simply asked the person taking orders what flavors were gluten-free, the manager came out to get our order personally, and suggested that she scoop the ice cream out of a brand new tub in the back with a clean scoop to ensure there wouldn't be any cross contact with gluten.

Large cities like New York, LA, and Chicago also have really great gluten-free restaurants (many are 100% dedicated gluten-free locations).

5. If you could plan a trip anywhere, where would you go?

If I could go anywhere, I would cruise around the Mediterranean docking at the different countries.  It would be amazing!

Vacation Planning Tips for Gluten-free Travelers

When I first starting eating gluten-free, I made some pretty big mistakes while traveling (see #3). So today, Iโ€™m sharing my top tips for traveling when you are gluten-free!

Tip #1 for gluten-free travel: Pack snacks

Make sure you pack plenty of your favorite snacks just in case you get stuck in a situation where gluten-free foods arenโ€™t available. Fruit like apples, bananas, and oranges are easy to transport, but make sure you pack some more filling foods like Kind Bars, Larabars, gluten-free pretzels, nuts, trail mix, beef jerky, etc.

Tip #2 for gluten-free travel: Take gluten-free translation cards

If you are traveling internationally, youโ€™ll want to make sure you take a gluten-free translation card to communicate your dietary restrictions to your restaurant server. I recommend Equal Eats translation cards and you can purchase physical or digital cards. Equal Eats also offers custom translation cards for those with multiple allergies.

Tip #3 for gluten-free travel: Speak up at restaurants

When I first started eating gluten-free I felt embarrassed asking my server what items were gluten-free. However, I quickly learned that many restaurants were very accommodating and sometimes even had gluten-free menus available. Donโ€™t be shy - ask your server what items are gluten-free or can be prepared gluten-free. This might even require you to ask if a menu item can be prepared in a separate pan.

Also, donโ€™t forget to speak in phrases that are easy to understand, especially internationally. You might have better luck saying, โ€œIโ€™m allergic to gluten, which includes wheat, barley, and rye, etc.โ€ instead of โ€œI have celiac diseaseโ€ or โ€œI eat gluten-freeโ€. Also, donโ€™t forget to confirm with your server that your items are gluten-free when they are brought to your table.

If you are still concerned after speaking to your server, ask for the manager or stick to naturally gluten-free items.

Tip #4 for gluten-free travel: Request a microwave or mini-fridge

Many resorts will provide a microwave or mini-fridge in your room if necessary. Check with your resort prior to travel or have your travel advisor make the request for you. This will allow you to purchase snacks or other items when out and to store / prepare them in your room if needed.

Tip #5 for gluten-free travel: Call your resort ahead of time

Resorts have made great strides in offering menus for gluten-free travelers. For example, Beaches and Sandals Resorts even offer a Culinary Concierge desk that is centrally located and is ready to assist guests with special dietary requirements or food allergies. When you book with Gluten-Free Vacations, we will contact your resort for you prior to travel to address all of your concerns.
