Gluten-free Translation Cards: Eat Safe While Traveling

Traveling abroad can be a challenging experience for those who have dietary or allergy restrictions. Eating out, ordering food, or picking up groceries can be a stressful experience when you're in a new country!

To help make this process easier, I recommend having translation cards while traveling.

What are translation cards?

Translation cards are small, laminated cards that are the same size as a credit card, that provide documentation on any dietary or allergy restrictions that you have. You can have these cards translated into the language of the country you plan on traveling to. So the card will be English on one side and the foreign language on the other side.

Traveling to another country with dietary restrictions can be disheartening for those who don't speak the local language. And so, these handy translation cards help ensure that servers are aware of any particular limitations and can accommodate them appropriately.

I don’t leave home without my gluten-free translation card. It came in handy during my last trip to Mexico while visiting Playa del Carmen.

What is included on the translation cards?

There is plenty of helpful information on these cards that you can share with your server or restaurant staff. Using celiac disease as an example, cards will list foods that contain gluten like bread, pasta, or sauce. There is also a note on cross-contact, providing a warning that eating foods with cross-contact can make you very ill.

For travelers with celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, translation cards can be a lifesaver! You can request a custom translation card too for purchase if you have multiple allergies and require a card to explain them at the restaurant.

Purchase Cards from Equal Eats

Equal Eats offers translation cards for individuals with dietary restrictions. Equal Eats was founded by Kyle Dine after traveling throughout Europe. He has multiple food allergies and is dedicated to helping other eat safer while traveling.

Whether it's a peanut allergy, celiac disease or a diabetic diet, Equal Eats provides cards in 50 different languages! All cards are professional translated and custom cards are available too.

Tips for purchasing translation cards

  • If you have multiple food allergies, make sure they are all included in your order so everything will be listed on your translation card.

  • Order your cards ahead of time so you can be sure that they will be delivered to you before you travel. I prefer the printed cards just in case my server needs to share my card with the chef. If you do purchase the digital version, make sure you have it on your phone and print a copy too.

  • To safeguard against the possibility of losing your card, ensure that you have at least two copies of it (one on hand and another stored in your hotel room should you lose your card).

Let us turn your dream vacation into reality!

When you work with us, you’ll get the following:

  • Recommendations for destinations, hotels, and cruises based on your needs

  • Custom document package mailed to you with your itinerary, confirmations, travel tips, and more!

15 Ways to Travel Like a Pro

As a travel advisor for gluten-free travelers, I want to help people travel smarter, smoother, and with confidence, no matter where they're headed. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or getting ready for your first big trip, traveling like a pro means being prepared and staying flexible, especially when managing dietary restrictions.

In this blog, I’m sharing practical tips and gluten-free strategies to help you navigate your journey with confidence. From smart packing to handling travel delays and finding safe food options, these tips will help you stay stress-free and enjoy the adventure.

1. Don’t Get Hangry

Travel days can be unpredictable, so always pack snacks and a full gluten-free meal as a backup. It may take some time to get settled at your destination or find safe gluten-free options at your resort or hotel. Having a full meal and a few snacks on hand will give you peace of mind and help you get through long travel days comfortably.

If you’re flying, be sure to check the latest TSA regulations before packing food. I recommend bringing whole fruits and dry snacks for your flight. Items like yogurt, salad dressings, and dips can be tricky since there are restrictions on how much liquid or gel you can carry on. The good news is that you can always purchase these items after passing through security and bring them on the plane with you.

Some of my favorite travel snacks:

  • Fresh fruit such as oranges, apples, and bananas*

  • KIND Bars or Larabars

  • Gluten-free pretzels

  • Nuts or trail mix

  • Beef jerky (I love the Chomps brand!)

  • Rice cakes

  • Gluten-free cookies

  • Candy

*If you’re traveling internationally, keep in mind that some countries do not allow travelers to bring fresh fruits or vegetables across borders, as they can introduce pests or plant diseases. In those cases, it’s best to purchase produce once you’ve arrived at your destination.

2. Pack in a Carry On

International baggage claims can take up to an hour, or worse, bags can get delayed. That’s why I always recommend packing in a carry-on suitcase and bringing a backpack or large tote with essentials like medications, food, a change of clothes, and a swimsuit (in case your room isn’t ready when you arrive). I haven’t checked a bag in over 10 years, and I travel with two kids! They each bring their own carry-ons, and yes, it is possible. Packing light makes for a smoother, stress-free start to your vacation.

3. Purchase Travel Insurance

Even a small accident abroad can cost thousands, and most personal medical insurance plans don’t cover international expenses. On top of that, many hospitals in other countries require upfront payment before providing care.

If you don’t purchase travel insurance, you will need to make sure you have quick access to a large sum of money in case of an emergency. Travel insurance gives you peace of mind, protects your health and wallet, and can truly save the day when the unexpected happens. We recommend Travel Insured International.

4. Take Gluten-free Translation Cards

Clear communication is key when you're traveling gluten-free, especially in countries where you don’t speak the language. Gluten-free translation cards can help you explain your dietary needs accurately and avoid cross-contact. We highly recommend Equal Eats, their cards are professionally translated, easy to carry, and a great tool for stress-free dining abroad.

5. Stay Connected

Make sure to get international cell phone service before your trip, you’ll need it to access travel details, use apps like Find Me Gluten-Free, Google Translate, maps, and more. And don’t forget to pack a power bank or portable charger to keep your phone powered throughout busy travel days. Staying connected means staying prepared, informed, and safe!

6. Make your bags traceable

I highly recommend using Apple AirTags or similar tracking devices when you travel. Whether it's checked luggage, carry-ons, or even your kids' backpacks, having a tracker gives you peace of mind. If a bag goes missing or an item gets left behind, you’ll have a much better chance of quickly locating it, saving time, stress, and potential vacation headaches.

7. Download the Mobile Passport Control MPC app

If you don’t have Global Entry, the Mobile Passport Control (MPC) app is a great alternative, and it’s free! You can upload your passport info and complete your customs declaration right in the app, allowing you to use a shorter line when going through U.S. Immigration. It’s a simple way to save time and make your return home smoother.

8. Pack a Portable Carbon Monoxide Detector

Many countries don’t require carbon monoxide detectors, so I always travel with a compact one for peace of mind. I recommend this one because it’s small, easy to pack, and reliable. Just don’t forget to take it with you when you leave!

9. Take pictures of your passports

Take clear photos of your passports and store them in a secure, accessible place, like emailing them to yourself or uploading them to a cloud service. If your passport gets lost or stolen, having a copy can make it much easier to get assistance and replace it while abroad.

10. Bring your own over-the-counter medicine

It’s always smart to pack your own over-the-counter medications when traveling, just in case you need them and can’t find the right products abroad. I personally use this one, it is small and can hold several types of medication.

11. Book excursions prior to arrival

To ensure you’re able to join the excursions you’re interested in, please make sure to book them before you arrive. You can find and reserve your excursions through Project Expedition.

12. Keep your valuables safe

Leave expensive jewelry at home and only bring what you truly need. For important items like passports, credit cards, and extra cash, always use the safe in your hotel room or cruise ship cabin to keep them secure when you’re out and about.

13. Thank the Staff

Resort and cruise staff work incredibly hard, long hours, often with limited time off. In places like Mexico, where the minimum wage is only about 278.80 MXN (around $13 USD) for an 8-hour day, tips can make a huge difference. Even a few dollars can greatly impact their livelihood and often lead to warmer, more attentive service. A little gratitude goes a long way!

While tipping is appreciated, there are many other meaningful ways to show gratitude:

  • Compliment staff members directly - praising their help costs nothing but means a lot!

  • Let their manager know about outstanding service.

  • Write a positive review on sites like Tripadvisor, and mention the staff member by name.

For example, one client was so thankful for a server who carefully handled her gluten-free meal and ensured they knew how much they appreciated them. The server later surprised her with freshly made gluten-free muffins. When guests are kind and appreciative, staff often go the extra mile to make the experience unforgettable!

14. Pack a Positive Mindset & Patience

Having a positive outlook doesn’t mean ignoring challenges or frustrations, but rather being prepared to handle them calmly and see them as opportunities. As a frequent traveler and advisor, I’ve seen delays, cancellations, and other setbacks happen regularly. Sometimes meals take longer than expected, or weather changes plans. Being open to these situations can help reduce stress and even turn unexpected changes into worthwhile experiences. For example, a client had their flight from London cancelled during a layover and chose to spend the day exploring the city instead of getting upset, turning a setback into a memorable part of their trip.

*Remember, a customized meal may take a bit longer to prepare. This isn’t because of slow service, but because the staff is taking extra care to ensure everything is done safely and correctly.

15. Book with a travel advisor who specializes in vacations for gluten-free travelers

Working with an advisor who understands gluten-free needs can make a world of difference. They can recommend trusted resorts and vetted restaurants that accommodate your dietary needs, so you can relax, eat safely, and fully enjoy your vacation without the stress of worrying about food.

Google Translate Tips Every Gluten-Free Traveler Should Know

When you're traveling internationally with celiac disease or a strict gluten-free diet, communication can be one of the biggest hurdles, especially in a country where you don't speak the language. Menus become mysteries, questions feel awkward, and even reading ingredient labels can be overwhelming.

Whether you’re traveling to Italy, Greece, Spain, or France, the Google Translate App can help! It's one of the best free tools out there for gluten-free travelers, and when used well, it can help you feel more confident and prepared wherever you go.

Here’s how to make the most of it.

Download the Google Translate App Before You Go

Google Translate App

Don’t rely on Wi-Fi or data when you’re standing in a busy restaurant. Before your trip, download the Google Translate app and the language packs you’ll need for offline use. This way, you’ll always have translation access, even when you don’t have internet.

To do this:

  • Open the app

  • Tap your profile picture or the menu icon

  • Select “Offline translation”

  • Tap the download icon next to any language you need for offline access

Ways to Use the Google Translate App

Here are practical ways you can use Google Translate while traveling abroad to make communication smoother.

1. Instant Text Translation

Use you the Google translate app to translate menus

Use the camera feature to translate restaurant menus, grocery labels, or signs. All you need to do is point your phone at the text, and you can instantly read the text in your language. You can also do this with the live camera translation.

This is a lifesaver for:

  • Restaurant menus that don’t offer English versions

  • Ingredient lists on packaged foods

  • Grocery store signage

Tip: If the translation is a little awkward, try taking a photo and using the "scan" or "select text" feature to manually highlight and translate specific words or sections.

Check out our video on how to translate food packaging.

2. Voice Translation for Conversations

Ordering food in the restaurant and want to ensure something is gluten-free? Use the microphone feature for two-way voice conversations. You speak into your phone, and it speaks back in the local language, for example you can:

  • Ask if a dish contains gluten

  • Explain your dietary restrictions

  • Say thank you

Voice Translations also makes it easier to save common phrases such as:

  • “I have celiac disease and cannot eat any gluten.”

  • “Does this contain wheat, barley, or rye?”

  • “Can I see the ingredient list?”

While Google Translate is useful for in-the-moment communication, it’s also smart to travel with a printed gluten-free translation card.

Final Thoughts…

While Google Translate isn’t flawless, it’s an incredibly powerful tool that helps bridge the communication gap for travelers with dietary restrictions, especially those who need to eat strictly gluten-free.

When in doubt:

  • Use the camera and typed text to double-check.

  • Combine translation with visual cues (packaging symbols, kitchen setup, staff knowledge).

  • Trust your gut. If something doesn’t feel safe, skip it.

From reading menus and ingredient labels to explaining gluten-free in another language, Google Translate adds a layer of safety and peace of mind that can truly make or break a trip. It’s not a substitute for preparation or research, but it’s a valuable companion that empowers us to travel with greater confidence, one gluten-free meal at a time.

Safe travels, and happy gluten-free exploring!

Enhance Your Jamaican Travel Experience with Club Mobay

Heading to Jamaica with your flight and resort already booked? There’s one more detail you won’t want to overlook: Club Mobay. If you're flying into Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, this premium airport service can save you time and make your airport experience less stressful.

What is Club Mobay?

Club Mobay is a VIP airport experience designed to take the hassle out of both your arrival and departure. This includes VIP Fast Track through immigration and customs and access to their VIP lounge.

If you are looking to save time and want to upgrade your airport experience, I recommend Club Mobay.

Who Should Book Club Mobay?

While anyone can benefit, Club Mobay is especially ideal for:

  • First-time visitors to Jamaica

  • Travelers during the busy season (December–April)

  • Families with kids or elderly travelers

  • Honeymooners or special occasion travelers looking for a smooth, luxurious experience from start to finish

Is it worth the additional cost?

In my opinion, Club Mobay is a great option if you’d like VIP Fast Track and lounge access, but I don’t recommend booking it for their gluten-free food options (details below). You will most likely want to purchase gluten-free food in the airport or bring your own food with you.

Club Mobay Services

Whether you're arriving in Jamaica or heading home, Club Mobay offers a seamless, VIP experience that takes the stress out of airport travel. Below is a breakdown of Club Mobay options:

Arrival Experience – VIP Fast Track

The moment you land at Sangster International Airport (MBJ), your vacation begins. A friendly Club Mobay representative will be waiting for you at the designated meeting point, holding a sign with your name.

From there, you’ll be personally escorted through:

  • The Fast Track immigration line (skip the crowds!)

  • Assistance with luggage at baggage claim

  • An invitation to relax in the Club Mobay arrival lounge while you wait for your ground transportation

This arrival experience is ideal after a long flight, giving you a stress-free welcome to paradise.

How much time will VIP Fast Track save you? The exact amount of time can depend on the number of arriving flights, time of day, and need for declarations. During peak times, immigration and customs can take 1-2 hours, while only 15-30 mins with Club Mobay.

Departure Experience – VIP Fast Track & Lounge Access

Leaving Jamaica is never easy, but Club Mobay makes it more enjoyable. After checking in with your airline, you’ll receive:

  • Expedited security clearance

  • Access to the luxurious 11,000 sq. ft. departure lounge

  • A complimentary bar, light bites, snacks, and non-alcoholic beverages

  • A peaceful, quiet space to relax before your flight

  • Optional spa services (additional cost)

  • A family zone and business center for your specific needs

Whether you're traveling solo, with family, or on a romantic getaway, the departure lounge gives you the perfect send-off.

VIP Lounge Features:

  • Comfortable Seating

  • Free Wi-Fi

  • Expedited Security (Fast Track)

  • Flight Information and Boarding Announcements

  • Private Restrooms and Showers

  • Spa Services

  • Complimentary Phone Calls

  • Free Food and Beverages

  • Adults-Only Lounge Area

  • Kids' Play Area (Pickney Place)

  • Newspapers and Magazines

Gluten-free Options

While Club Mobay in Sangster International Airport (MBJ) has a variety of gluten-free items, we still recommend being cautious. The buffet at the departure lounge clearly labels gluten-free options and has fresh fruits, salads, and snacks.

Travel Tip for Celiac and Gluten-Sensitive Guests:
Like many buffets, there’s always a risk of cross-contact. To stay on the safe side, it’s best to speak with a staff member directly about specially prepared gluten-free options that may be available or choose prepackaged snacks, like chips.

Also, consider planning ahead by asking your resort concierge or room service if they can arrange a gluten-free snack or meal for your journey to the airport. A little preparation goes a long way in ensuring your travel day stays stress-free and enjoyable.

Below are some gluten-free options that were available during my last visit. Items with a green card were considered gluten-free.

Cross-Contamination Versus Cross-Contact: What’s the Difference?

If you're new to gluten-free living or have recently been diagnosed with celiac disease, you may have heard both "cross-contact" and "cross-contamination" used when talking about food safety. While they’re often used interchangeably, they actually mean different things—and understanding the distinction is important when dining out or preparing meals at home. So, which is the correct term, and what is the difference?

What is cross-contamination?

“Cross-contamination” is a term used in food safety to describe the transfer of harmful bacteria (like Salmonella or E. coli) from one surface or food to another. This is a concern when handling raw meat, unwashed produce, or improperly cleaned cooking tools. If this happens, you get a foodborne illness.

Here are some common examples:

  • Cutting raw chicken and then vegetables on the same board

  • Employees handling food without washing their hands

  • Equipment contaminated with bacteria in factories or restaurants

While cross-contamination is a big deal in any kitchen, it’s not specific to gluten.

To prevent cross-contamination and the spread of bacteria, always use a separate cutting board for raw meat and wear gloves when handling it.

What is cross-contact?

“Cross-contact” occurs when food allergens or gluten are accidentally transferred from one food or surface to another that is intended to be allergen-free or gluten-free. For people with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, even a tiny trace of gluten from “cross-contact” can cause serious illness.

Here are some common examples:

  • Using the same knife to cut a regular sandwich and then a gluten-free one

  • Toasting gluten-free bread in a shared toaster

  • French fries cooked in oil that was also used to fry breaded items containing gluten

  • A chef using the same gloves or cooking surface for both gluten and gluten-free meals

Even a crumb of gluten can trigger symptoms and intestinal damage in someone with celiac disease. That’s why cross-contact must be taken seriously.

To prevent gluten cross-contact in a fryer, use separate equipment and fresh oil dedicated to preparing gluten-free food. This means using separate fry baskets, utensils, and even dedicated fryers. Always ask your server or chef if a fryer is truly gluten-free before ordering fried food.

Quick Comparison

Cross-Contamination Bacteria & Pathogens Foodborne illness Cooking will kill the bacteria and/or pathogens

Example: Raw chicken touching salad

Cross-Contact
Allergens or proteins
Immune reaction
Cooking will NOT kill off the allergens or proteins

Example: Gluten crumbs on a gluten-free plate

Why are these terms used?

Many people are unfamiliar with celiac disease and gluten sensitivities, and even fewer understand what “cross-contact” means or why it can make someone with an autoimmune condition seriously ill. However, the term “cross-contamination” is more widely recognized, especially in the context of food safety and allergies.

Since food service workers often receive training in food preparation to prevent illness, those in the gluten-free community sometimes use the term “cross-contamination” simply because it's better understood (and seems to be taken more seriously). It’s similar to how, when asked if we have an allergy, we say “yes” when ordering food, even though celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder. This shows the ongoing need for education and awareness about gluten-related conditions in the food industry and beyond.

We get it…

While the technically correct term for gluten transfer is “cross-contact,” we completely understand why many people say “cross-contamination” instead. As mentioned above, “cross-contamination” is often more widely recognized and taken seriously in restaurants.

So go with whatever feels most comfortable and gets the point across, especially when speaking with servers or chefs. We’ve said it ourselves, “I’m allergic to gluten and can’t have any cross-contamination.”

Say whatever you need to say to ensure your meal is safe!

Why I Love Scape Park in Punta Cana

If you're heading to Punta Cana and want something fun, adventurous, and totally unique to add to your trip, let me introduce you to one of my absolute favorite places: Scape Park in Punta Cana.

I've been there twice now, and honestly, I would go back again in a heartbeat. It's just that good. Whether you're traveling with kids, teens, or a group of adults looking for some excitement, Scape Park has something for everyone.

While I love Scape Park, it's definitely NOT because of their gluten-free food options. Find out why I love this park and how to prepare if you are a gluten-free traveler.

So, What Is Scape Park?

Scape Park is this amazing eco-adventure park tucked away in Cap Cana, which is a gorgeous and upscale area in Punta Cana. The park is huge—think jungle trails, hidden cenotes (natural freshwater pools), ziplines, caves, and even animal encounters.

It’s the kind of place where you can spend the day doing as much—or as little—as you want. Want to zipline through the trees? Go for it. Prefer to chill in a hammock over the water or swim in a magical cenote? That’s an option too. You get to set the pace and create your own perfect day.

Great for Adventure Lovers & Families

What I love most about Scape Park is its versatility. When I visited for the first time with my kids, there were so many activities they could safely enjoy—like swimming near the waterfall, trying out the lower hammock ziplines, and exploring the scenic trails.

The second time, I went with a friend, and we leaned into the more adventurous stuff—ziplining, cave exploration, and hiking to the Blue Hole. It’s a place where everyone can find something that fits their vibe for the day.

What to Wear to Scape Park

Trust me—what you wear to Scape Park can make a BIG difference in how comfortable you are throughout the day. Since you'll be hiking, climbing, ziplining, swimming, and probably getting splashed more than once, the key is comfort and quick-drying clothes.

You’ll be wearing a harness for the zipline, so the more coverage you have, the better—it helps prevent any rubbing or chafing.

Based on my visits, here’s what I recommend:

  • For women and girls: A full-coverage swimsuit paired with quick-dry, waterproof shorts.

  • For men and boys: Swim trunks and a rash guard or quick-dry athletic shirt.

  • Water shoes: Waterproof shoes that are also sturdy enough for walking and light hiking. Think closed-toe water shoes or sandals with good grip. These water shoes are my favorite.

Whatever you do, leave your flip-flops at the resort—they’re not great for ziplining or walking on paths.

What to Bring to Scape Park

  • A lock - There are lockers at the entrance that I recommend using to store all valuables. If you don’t have a lock, they sell them for $5.

  • A towel – Lightweight and compact is best. If you are staying at a resort, you can take one from there, but always remember to return it.

  • A change of clothes – Especially if you're heading back to your resort in the shuttle and don’t want to sit in wet clothes.

  • Sunscreen and bug spray – Always bring more than you think you’ll need.

  • A waterproof phone case – This is a must to get some great pictures! I recommend one that you can wear around your neck and also fit a credit card or cash in for snacks or drinks. This waterproof phone case is my favorite.

Getting to Scape Park

Whether you’re staying at a nearby resort or a bit farther away, there are several convenient transportation options to choose from.

Included Shuttle
One of the things I really love about Scape Park is how easy it is to get there. When you purchase your tickets, round-trip transportation from most Punta Cana resorts is included. A shuttle will pick you up in the morning and drop you off after your adventure-filled day—super convenient, and no need to stress about logistics. Note, the shuttle does stop at other resorts on the way, which can add to your transfer time.

Taxis
That said, if you're staying in Cap Cana, I actually recommend skipping the included shuttle and taking a quick taxi instead. Most Cap Cana resorts are just a few minutes from Scape Park, and a taxi typically costs around $4 plus a tip. Just ask the bellman at your resort to call one for you. This gives you way more flexibility—you can arrive and leave when you want instead of waiting on the group transfer.

When you’re ready to head back, just stop by the info desk inside the park’s main store and they’ll call a taxi for you. I don’t recommend hopping in one of the taxis waiting outside—better safe than sorry.

Private Transfers
If you're staying outside the main resort areas or just prefer to handle your own transportation, there are also plenty of private transfer options available. Your concierge can easily help you book one.

All in all, getting to and from Scape Park is a breeze, no matter where you're staying—so you can focus on the fun, not the commute!

Pro Tip - Arrive early! When the shuttle buses get there, lines can form at the entrance. Consider taking a taxi or private transfer and arriving 15–20 minutes before the park opens to beat the crowd.

My Favorite Areas at Scape Park

Here are a few of my favorite spots in the park—but be sure to check out the park map for a full list of activities!

Saltos Azules

This area is basically a water playground with a waterfall, zipline jump, and hammock ziplines (great for younger kids!).

Hoyo Azul (aka the Blue Hole)

This is hands-down one of the most beautiful swimming spots. It’s a crystal-clear, bright turquoise cenote tucked beneath a cliff. The water is cold (which feels amazing on a hot day), and the whole hike to get there is just gorgeous.

Pro Tip: The hike along the wooded trails takes about 15–20 minutes, so be sure to wear comfortable water shoes. Keep in mind, the distance of this hike might be a bit much for younger children.

Ziplining Through the Jungle

This isn’t your typical zipline course! If you're craving a bit of adrenaline on your vacation, this experience won't disappoint. Choose from several exciting options, like the Eco Splash that sends you zipping through water or the Super Ride, where you soar headfirst in a flat-flying position.

Pro Tips:

  • Determine ending location - The ziplines wind through the jungle, with some returning to the starting point and others ending in different areas of the park. If you're with a group and some members aren't ziplining, be sure to ask the staff where they should meet you afterward.

  • Don’t plan on pictures - Since most of the ziplines run through or above the trees rather than over walking paths, it's difficult—if not impossible—for others to get photos of you while you're ziplining.

  • Do the Super Ride last - This zipline begins near the waterfall at the back of the park and ends up front by the lockers. If you choose to do it mid-visit, just keep in mind you'll need to walk all the way back through the park to return to other areas.

Animal Encounters

We got to see monkeys, parrots, and iguanas—my kids loved this part. It’s a great break between the bigger adventure stuff.

Cultural Route & Cave Swim

On this nature walk, you’ll get to check out real-life replicas of homes once lived in by the Taino Indians, Spanish conquistadors, African slaves, and Dominican peasants. After that, take a dip in a hidden cave spring and experience the refreshing water that ancient natives once used for sacred rituals. It’s a great way to connect with nature and soak up some culture at the same time.

Gluten-free at Scape Park

As someone who eats gluten-free and helps others do the same while traveling, I always go into day trips like this with a little bit of a plan.

The downside? Scape Park does have a restaurant and snack areas, but there’s VERY limited information about allergens and cross-contact precautions. Therefore, I do NOT recommend eating any of the prepared foods at the snack stands (pizza) or at the restaurant (burgers, fries, etc.). You’ll find packaged snacks like drinks, candy, and chips available for purchase.

The upside? You can enjoy a day at Scape Park while staying gluten-free—it just takes a little preparation.

So if you have celiac disease or are sensitive to gluten (like me), I’d recommend bringing your own food for the day.

Here’s what worked well for me on both of my visits:

  1. I ate a big breakfast at the resort before heading out, and then planned to return in the early afternoon for a late lunch back at the resort. I love this park because you really can go for a half day without feeling rushed.

  2. I packed my own gluten-free snacks like granola bars, beef jerky, and candy for quick energy throughout the day.

  3. I bought drinks at their snack stand (they had Gatorade, soda, and bottled water—plenty of safe options there).

If you're going to stay all day and need more than snacks, you could easily pack a gluten-free lunch in a small cooler bag. Many resorts will prepare a to-go meal if you request one through room service or the concierge.

Now technically... snacks from outside aren't allowed in the park, but I’ve never had an issue. I recommend bringing a gluten-free translation card in Spanish just in case you need to show it to a staff member.

So if you're looking to add a little adventure to your Punta Cana vacation, Scape Park is a must. From ziplining through the jungle and swimming in crystal-clear cenotes to exploring cultural trails and spotting wildlife, this park really does have something for everyone. It’s fun, flexible, and packed with unique experiences you won’t find at your resort.

And if you’re gluten-free like me, with a little planning, you can still enjoy the day without stress. Whether you're traveling with kids, friends, or just looking for something different to do, Scape Park is absolutely worth the trip—I can’t wait to go back again!

My Favorite Vacations for Gluten-free Families

Traveling safely when you or someone in your family needs to be gluten-free is stressful! That’s why I’m excited to share some of my favorite vacations for families with gluten-free needs. As a travel advisor, I've helped countless families with children who have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity find the perfect vacation spot. And as a mom of two (ages 11 and 13), I know just how crucial kid-friendly food options are, especially for picky eaters.

While travel can sometimes be stressful, there are countless ways to make it easier for you and your little ones. The good news? Many amazing resorts and cruise lines fully understand the importance of offering various gluten-free food options and preventing cross-contact.

If you’re ready for a stress-free getaway with your family, check out my top 3 vacation picks for gluten-free families: all-inclusive resorts, Disney World, and cruises. Each offers safe and delicious gluten-free dining options—and I’m sharing exactly why they’re my favorites below!

All-Inclusive Resorts

I absolutely love all-inclusive resorts, and here’s why: they take the stress out of vacation planning, which allows you and your family to relax and enjoy your time together. With a wide variety of dining options, I never have to worry about what my family can eat—it’s all taken care of with top-notch cuisine that caters to our dietary needs. Plus, all the activity options and amenities mean there’s something for everyone, from lounging by the pool to fun excursions. It’s the ultimate hassle-free vacation. We can focus on making memories, not planning meal plans.

However, not all all-inclusive resorts are equal!!!

I’ve personally visited over 60 all-inclusive resorts, and honestly, there are many that I would never recommend for anyone with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity. But the good ones that really focus on food quality and service? They can give you an amazing vacation experience! You'll get delicious, safe gluten-free options that'll let you relax and enjoy your trip without any worries.

My favorite all-inclusive resorts offer the following:

  • Wide Variety of Gluten-Free Options: Some of my favorite resorts offer gluten-free bread, pizza, pancakes, French toast, burgers, French fries, pastries, etc. For once, you can finally go on vacation and indulge!

  • Understanding Cross-Contact: These resorts understand the importance of preventing cross-contact. When you check in with the hostess at a restaurant, they’ll ask you if anyone in your party has allergies so they can notify your server. They also have dedicated prep areas and a knowledgeable staff to ensure meals are safe. Chefs and kitchen staff undergo specialized training and often use separate utensils and cooking stations to prevent gluten exposure.

  • Stress-Free Experience: To me, there is nothing worse than spending your vacation researching where you'll have your next meal. At an all-inclusive resort, all restaurant staff receive the same training, so you can dine worry-free at any of the on-site restaurants.

  • Unlimited Dining: The beauty of all-inclusive resorts is that you can order as much food as you want. Have a picky eater who didn’t like their dinner? No worries—just order something else! Want to mix things up? Try appetizers at one restaurant and dinner at another. I often do this myself because I need to sample a variety of gluten-free items for my clients (tough job, right?). I’ve even had nights where I hit up multiple restaurants for dinner—rumor has it, I once dined at five different places in one evening (never doing that again, though!).

Whether you’re lounging by the pool or splashing in the ocean, you’ll never have to worry about what’s for dinner. Think about those afternoons with a refreshing cocktail in one hand and a gluten-free snack in the other while the kids are off enjoying supervised activities. Bliss, right?

Disney World

Disney World Gluten-free Travel Agency

Ah, the magic of Disney! For those of us who need to eat gluten-free, Disney is extra magical! We can enjoy everything the park provides, as well as safe gluten-free food. The best part is they have “kid-approved” food. As a family that must have gluten-free options, we not only plan our day around rides and experiences, but also where we can get the best gluten-free foods. Gluten-free churros, anyone?

Why I love Disney World vacations:

  • Comprehensive Menus: Most restaurants offer a separate section outlining gluten-free items, making it easy to choose safe and delicious meals. Whether you're dining at Cinderella’s Royal Table or grabbing a quick bite at a food cart, gluten-free choices are clearly marked so everyone can enjoy the parks!

  • Kid-Friendly Options: Think gluten-free chicken tenders, pizza, and even Mickey-shaped treats that the kids will love. Yes, your little ones can still enjoy all their favorite theme park foods without any worries! Even classics like churros and popcorn have gluten-free versions.

  • Trained Staff: Disney’s staff is highly trained in preventing cross-contact. As an extra measure of safety, they place a skewer in your food that says "allergy." This is reassuring for those with allergies. Not only can you have fun, but you don’t have to constantly be worrying about your food.

  • Ability to Bring Your Own Food: Especially for young children or picky eaters, I understand the importance of being able to have familiar foods while traveling. Thankfully, Disney allows you to bring your own food to the parks and even a small cooler. If you're staying at a nearby hotel, I highly recommend using Walmart or Instacart for a grocery delivery order. This way, you can have all your favorite food items ready and waiting for you the day you arrive. It’s a game-changer for making your trip stress-free!

  • Erin McKenna’s Gluten-free Bakery: A trip to Disney World isn’t complete without a stop at Erin McKenna’s Bakery in Disney Springs.
Pro Tip: On the day you arrive in Orlando, head to Disney Springs for dinner (The Boathouse is my personal favorite). Afterward, swing by Erin McKenna’s to load up on gluten-free donuts and pastries to enjoy throughout the week. It’s the perfect way to start your vacation!

From character breakfasts where the kids can meet Mickey and friends to dinners lit by fireworks, Disney World ensures magical and safe dining experiences for everyone. There’s something so comforting about knowing that your food is safe, so the entire family can focus on having a great time, whether that's meeting Elsa or soaring through Space Mountain.

Cruises

Cruise Gluten-free, Travel Agency

Set sail on an adventure without the worry of finding safe meals. Cruises are a fantastic choice for gluten-free travelers:

  • Diverse Food Options: Main dining rooms and specialty restaurants offer a wide variety of gluten-free dishes—from breakfast to dessert. Whether you're enjoying gourmet dining or a casual meal, the choices are plentiful and delicious.

  • Dedicated Server: In the main dining room, you’ll have a dedicated server each night. They know your dietary needs and ensure every meal is safe. This means you will not have to explain your dietary restrictions each time you eat! It sounds so simple, but for those of you who have dietary restrictions, you understand what a big deal this is! Having the same server enhances your comfort and trust in safe food.

  • Ability to Explore: Enjoy new destinations and ports knowing you’ll have a safe place for breakfast and dinner. You’ll only need to figure out where to eat lunch or you can pack something to take with you into port.

Cruising means you get to explore multiple destinations while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with dedicated gluten-free dining. Imagine exploring the ruins of the Caribbean during the day and indulging in a multi-course gourmet gluten-free meal as you watch the sunset over the sea.

Final Thoughts

Traveling gluten-free doesn't have to be stressful. From all-inclusive resorts to Disney World to cruises, these destinations offer stress-free, fun-filled experiences with safe dining options. Each destination is prepared to make your vacation an unforgettable family experience by ensuring everyone’s dietary needs are met effortlessly.

So, pack your bags and let’s make some unforgettable memories! Adventures await you where gluten worries are left behind.

Have questions or need help planning your next gluten-free family vacation? I’m here to make it all smooth-sailing!

Happy travels!

Should You Tip at an All-Inclusive Resort?

Planning a vacation at an all-inclusive resort? While most meals, drinks, and activities are included, one question that comes up often—especially for gluten-free travelers—is: Should I tip? The answer isn’t always straightforward, as tipping customs can vary by resort and destination. In this post, I’ll walk you through when and how to tip, how much cash to bring, and why tipping can make a big difference—particularly when staff go out of their way to ensure your meals are safe and your experience is unforgettable.

This is especially important in destinations like Mexico, where the minimum wage is low—just 278.80 MXN (about $13 USD) for an entire 8-hour workday—tips can make a big difference. Even a few dollars can significantly impact someone’s livelihood and often lead to even better service.

Is tipping included at all-inclusive resorts?

While tipping isn’t always required at all-inclusive resorts, it’s often appreciated, especially when someone goes the extra mile to make your stay safe and comfortable. This is especially true for gluten-free travelers, where personalized service can make all the difference in your dining experience and vacation.

Important Note: Some resorts, like Sandals and Beaches Resorts, have a strict no-tipping policy (except for spa staff and butlers). Be sure to check your resort’s guidelines in advance.

Who should you tip at an all-inclusive resort?

Tipping can encourage continued excellent service throughout your stay. While you don’t need to tip after every meal or drink, it's expected to tip:

  • Restaurant Servers

  • Beach / Poolside Servers

  • Spa Services

  • Transfer Drivers

  • Tour / Excursion Guides

How much cash should you bring?

A good rule of thumb is to carry $150–$300 USD in small bills to make tipping simple and convenient. U.S. dollars are widely accepted throughout the Caribbean and Mexico, though exchanging some cash for pesos in Mexico is always a thoughtful gesture and often appreciated.

I typically recommend bringing $100 in $1s, $100 in $5s, and $100 in $10s. Make sure your bills are clean and undamaged—bills with tears, markings, or excessive wear may be refused.

Recommended Tipping Amounts

DINING

  • Buffet Meals Servers: $1–$2 per table
(especially if they ensure you have safe gluten-free options from the kitchen)

  • Buffet Station Chefs: $1
(especially if they prepare a custom gluten-free dish for you)

  • À la Carte Meal Servers: $5-$10 per couple

  • Bartenders: $1–$2 per round
Insider Tip: Stick with the same bartender throughout your trip—they’ll get to know your preferences (including gluten-free drink requests) and often provide even better service.

When you travel with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, dining out can feel risky. But a little gratitude can go a long way. Tipping the staff who take care of your gluten-free needs encourages careful, attentive service throughout your stay.

Whether it’s a server double-checking your order, a chef preparing your food separately, or buffet staff retrieving safe items from the kitchen, these small acts of care can mean the difference between getting sick and an amazing vacation experience. Recognizing their effort with a tip not only shows appreciation, but it also motivates them to continue prioritizing your safety.

SERVICE

  • Concierge: $5–$10, depending on your usage

  • Room service: $5–$10 depending on complexity and time of day

  • Housekeeping: $2 per day (leave on pillow)
Insider Tip: Want more bottled water or wine instead of soda in your fridge? Leave a $2–$5 tip with a written request.

TRANSPORTATION

  • Bag Attendants: $1 per bag or per room visit

  • Private Transfer Drivers: $5–$10 per person, depending on distance

  • Bus Drivers: $1–$2 per couple

  • Tour / Excursion Guides: $5 to $10 per person. For smaller groups or longer tours, you can consider tipping 10% to 20% of the total tour cost.

By tipping those who go the extra mile, you’re more likely to receive consistent, high-quality service, making your trip less stressful and more enjoyable. You’ll spend less time worrying about cross-contact and more time relaxing.

The takeaway: If someone helps you eat safely, tip them—your stomach (and peace of mind) will thank you.

9 Reasons You Should Use a Gluten-free Travel Agent for Your Next Trip

I don’t think there’s a single person that doesn’t get excited about planning a vacation. It’s a fun and relaxing experience that helps you take a break from your daily obligations and enjoy a faraway destination. But, for people dealing with food allergies and gluten intolerance, planning a trip is harder than it seems. Simply trying to choose a destination that will align with their diet requirements is very stressful. And this is just one of the reasons why you need to use a travel agent / advisor for your next trip (that’s me!).

I am here to tell you that you don’t have to do this on your own. Getting help from a travel advisor, particularly one specializing in organizing vacations for people who suffer from food allergies or celiac disease, will be very helpful for you. And if you’re interested to discover more than just a single reason why you should hire one, take a look at the list I provided below.

1. Travel Advisors Have Experienced It All

Being one of those people, I can say that we know all the ins and outs of travel planning. Thanks to their year-long experience with helping people plan their dream vacation, advisors can suggest everything from great resorts to visit-worthy attractions. They also make sure to pick those resorts that understand the danger of cross-contact and that are sure about the meals they deliver. This all promises you’ll have a vacation of a lifetime.

Moreover, every travel agent has something they specialize in. And since my area of expertise is gluten-free vacations, I often travel to inspect different resorts and destinations and also talk with the staff and try various gluten-free meals. For example, I visited a total of 21 resorts during my trip to Jamaica, doing detailed site inspections over the course of 5 days. I can say that what we do can be quite exhaustive, but it’s the only way to ensure you get first-hand experience. And I am honored to be the one that can promise you complete safety and satisfaction!

2. Saves You Time

Another reason to use a travel agent when planning your next trip is that they will save you time. You just need to rely on their skill and knowledge to plan your whole trip - from resorts and flights to numerous activities. This means that you won’t have to spend much of your valuable time planning and organizing everything because you’ll have an expert to do it for you.

3. Saves You From Stress

If you’re still asking yourself, “Should I use a travel agent?”, hear this: instead of stressing about your itinerary and budget, they will organize everything for you. This will reduce the amount of stress you’ll experience if you have to organize everything by yourself. And hiring them will assure you that every aspect is well-taken care of, which means that you get to enjoy your vacation completely.

4. Provides Personalized Service

Is there a better reason to use a travel agent than the fact they’ll give you the most personalized service ever? This means they’ll work hard to design an itinerary that meets your needs. So, whether you’re looking for a resort fit for a family or a place where you can spend some relaxing time as a couple, they got you. More importantly, if you have specific dietary needs that must be met, you can rest assured that they will be.

5. Provides Expert Recommendations

Online booking often makes things more confusing than they should be. There is sometimes too much or too little information for you to be able to decide whether a resort is the right pick for you or not. But since a travel agent is an expert in the field, they can suggest the best options and give you expert insight that will be really useful for your travel.

6. Helps You Choose the Best Destination

Maybe you already have an idea about where you’d want to go for your next vacation, but with so many options out there, it can be hard to come up with a final decision. One of the greatest reasons to use a travel agent is because they’ll give you valuable advice on both location and resorts. Since every place has its pros and cons, you can really benefit from their knowledge to suggest which one will work the best for you.

7. They Can Deal With Unexpected Situations

No plan works flawlessly every time, and this is true for travel plans, too. From flight delays and changeable weather to lost luggage and whatnot, your advisor can help you overcome these all. If something goes wrong, they’ll assist you in making any unnecessary itinerary changes.

8. Books Everything For You

Not only will your agent suggest the best destination, but they can also book the accommodation, airfare, transportation, excursions, etc. They will even provide their recommendations for travel insurance. This saves you time, stress, and unnecessary hassle, as they will take care of all the details on your behalf. In addition, they often have connections with the resort staff and various tour companies, allowing them to get better deals or upgrades. When you decide to use a travel agent, all that’s left to do is be as excited as you can about your upcoming adventure!

9. Saves You Money

Speaking of great deals, one of the answers to “Why should I use a travel agent?” is that they will help you save money. Such a person will provide you with the right connections, which can ultimately make your trip significantly cheaper than if you’d planned it on your own. A travel advisor has exclusive access to offers and promotions, and they can also advise you on the best time to book your travel, as well.

I think I have been clear enough with this list of reasons why your decision to use a travel agent for your next trip will probably be the best one you can make. From suggesting destinations to picking resorts that meet your diet requirements, such an expert will relieve you from all the hassle of planning a vacation on your own.

Travel Insurance: A Must-Have for Your Vacation

Planning a trip is always exciting, but there’s one important step you should never skip: purchasing travel insurance. While it might seem like an unnecessary extra, travel insurance can save you from a world of trouble. Imagine getting sick before your trip, your flight being delayed, or your luggage getting lost. With travel insurance, you’re covered and can enjoy your adventure without worry. It's a small investment for a lot of peace of mind. Here’s why travel insurance should be a non-negotiable part of your travel plans.

Who Should Purchase Travel Insurance?

Anyone traveling, whether domestically or internationally, can benefit from travel insurance. It’s especially recommended if you have the following travel plans:

  • Domestic Trips

  • International Trips

  • Multiple Trips in a Year

Top Reasons to Buy Travel Insurance

Travel insurance can cover a range of unexpected events. Here are the key areas to ensure you have covered:

  • Cancellation Protection

    • Trip Cancellation for a Covered Reason: If you need to cancel your trip due to reasons like sickness, natural disasters, or a family emergency, your travel insurance will reimburse you for non-refundable expenses.

    • Optional Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR): This add-on allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and still recover up to 75% of your costs. It's crucial to purchase CFAR within 10-15 days of your initial deposit.

  • Trip Interruption/Delays

    • Coverage for delayed or missed flights can save you from additional costs and inconvenience.

    • If your trip is interrupted due to illness or quarantine, insurance can cover extra expenses like extended hotel stays and meals.

  • Medical Protection

    • Domestic health insurance often doesn’t cover medical expenses abroad. Travel insurance ensures you receive necessary medical care without bearing the full cost.

  • Personal Belongings

    • Coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items can save you from significant disappointment and financial loss.

  • In-Travel Support

    • Most travel insurance policies offer 24-hour emergency medical services and assistance, providing invaluable support in a foreign country.

Purchasing Travel Insurance

  • When to Buy

    • Ideally, purchase travel insurance within 10-15 days of your initial trip deposit to include CFAR coverage. However, you can still buy insurance up until your departure for medical and in-travel protection.

  • Buying Options

    • If you’re working with Gluten-free Vacations, we will provide a quote for travel insurance. Alternatively, you can purchase travel insurance directly online through the link below.

  • Read Your Plan Details

    • Carefully review all terms and conditions. If you have any questions, contact your insurance provider. Understanding your policy fully can prevent unpleasant surprises.

By securing travel insurance, you ensure a smoother, stress-free trip, knowing you’re protected from the unexpected. Don’t leave home without it!

My Must-Have Travel Apps

Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or embarking on a month-long journey, there's an app for every step of the way. As a travel agent who specializes in planning vacations for gluten-free travelers, there are several apps that I rely on frequently. These apps help me find the best restaurants, track flights, communicate with tour guides, and more.

Download the apps below and you'll be well-equipped to travel with confidence and ease. So, pack your bags, charge your devices, and let's dive into the world of apps that every gluten-free traveler should have in their arsenal.

Gluten-free Apps

With these apps, you'll have an easier time finding gluten-free food on your travels. Several different apps are fantastic resources for finding food and restaurants on a gluten-free diet. In addition, some of the following app options also have desktop versions available online.

Find Me Gluten Free

With this app you’ll have the ability to put in the location you're going to and instantly find restaurants vetted by others who are gluten-free. Rated by the safety, taste, and variety of food, reviewers can also leave a photo of their food or the restaurant's menu. Establishments that are dedicated gluten-free are marked by a green check mark. You can filter by the bakery, chains, brunch, lunch, takeout, delivery, pizza, beer, dessert, dairy-free, and kid-friendly.

In addition, the app also allows you to save restaurants and group them as you like by city. So when you're traveling, you can bookmark restaurants before you go on your gluten-free adventure! The paid app adds more features, so if you're a traveler, it's an excellent investment in finding safe gluten-free food!

Pro Tip: On the Find Me GF app, click “More” at the bottom, then “Airports”, and you’ll see restaurant ratings for most major airports.

Find Me Gluten Free

GF Scanner

The Gluten Free Scanner allows you to scan the barcode on a product. After scanning the barcode, this app will tell you if the product is gluten-free. If the product is not found or is missing ingredients, you can contribute by leaving product feedback.

When traveling, this app is great if you are at a grocery store or the airport and aren’t sure if a package item is gluten-free.

GF Scanner

GlutenDude

Gluten Dude provides a directory of 100% gluten-free restaurants and restaurants that are also gluten-free friendly. The founder vets the restaurants on the app, and new restaurants are added daily. He also has a list of gluten-free beer brands and stores that sell gluten-free beer.

For travelers, this app also offers a directory of airports with a list of every eatery at the airport and ratings on the gluten-free availability of foods.

GlutenDude

Travel Apps

WhatsApp

If you’re visiting another country, WhatsApp is a MUST. WhatsApp allows you to make calls or text over wi-fi and is important when you don’t have access to cell service. For those traveling to the Caribbean or Mexico, most resorts and tour / transportation companies use WhatsApp to communicate through this app.

WhatsApp

Google Translate

Google Translate is a lifesaver when you encounter languages you don't understand. You can translate text, spoken words, and even images. The conversation mode allows you to have real-time, two-way conversations with someone speaking a different language.

This app is so important for gluten-free travelers who don’t speak the local languages. While in some Spanish-speaking countries you might be able to simply say “sin gluten”, you might also need to communicate with more detail at times.

PLUS - if you use the camera feature, it can even translate food packaging!

Google Translate

Trip Plans

If you plan your next vacation with me, you’ll receive a link to download the Trip Plans app. This app will allow you to view your custom itinerary that I’ll create for you, all of your trip confirmations, my tips, and more. It will even automatically update if your flight times change.

Trip Plans

Your Airline’s App

Always download you airline’s app before you depart. This will allow you to get updates on your flights, view your boarding pass, make changes, etc.

Your Resort or Cruise Line’s App

Before you depart also download the app for your resort or cruise line if available. Many resorts now have apps where you can view the resort’s map, restaurant hours and menus, activity schedules, request room service, and more. For cruisers, having your cruise lines app is a must. With so many activities onboard, you won’t want to miss your favorites and their app is the best way to get information.

Traveling has never been easier thanks to these fantastic gluten-free and travel apps. Whether you're a meticulous planner or a spontaneous adventurer, these apps will make your next vacation stress-free. So, pack your bags and embark on your next adventure, knowing you have the best travel apps by your side. Bon voyage!

Have a favorite app that you don’t see on my list? Please send me a note to let me know.

5 Reasons Why Traveling Should Be Your Top Priority

Are you feeling burnt out from your daily routine and need a break? Or maybe you want to explore new cultures and create lasting memories with your loved ones. Whatever your reason, traveling should be at the top of your priority list. If you need more convincing, here are my top five reasons to travel:

At one of my favorite resorts in Punta Cana enjoying Shrimp Fra Diavolo. So good!

Delicious and Gluten-Free Travel

Being gluten-free shouldn't stop you from exploring the world and trying new foods. I've worked with all-inclusive resorts and cruise lines that provide my clients with safe and delicious gluten-free meals. While traveling, you can enjoy mouth-watering pizza, tacos, pastries, and even pasta. One of the many reasons to travel is that you deserve to have a worry-free vacation without sacrificing your dietary needs.

It's an opportunity to Immerse Yourself in Different Cultures

One of the most important reasons to travel is that it helps you appreciate the diversity of our planet and broadens your understanding of different ways of life. By getting to know others better, you’ll better understand the world around you – but also yourself.

Traveling Is Good for Your Health – Both Physical and Mental

Traveling is not only a great way to disconnect from our daily routines, but it can also positively impact our physical and mental well-being. When we travel, we expose ourselves to new experiences, meet new people, and see new places, all of which can help reduce stress and promote relaxation. One of the most compelling reasons to travel is the significant impact it can have on our mental health. People often report feeling more relaxed, less anxious, and more content after returning from a trip, proving that travel is not only a way to explore the world but also to take care of ourselves.

In addition to its positive impact on mental health, traveling can also benefit our physical health. Engaging in physical activities such as hiking, swimming, or walking around a new city can contribute to our overall fitness levels and help us maintain a healthy weight.

Traveling Is a Great Way to Bond With Your Favorite People

Traveling with your favorite people is an excellent way to strengthen relationships and create new memories. You'll have the opportunity to experience new things and create stories you'll cherish for years. Traveling with your partner on a romantic getaway can be a great way to reconnect and deepen your understanding of each other. Family vacations with the kids can be a wonderful way to share new experiences, learn new things, and have fun together.

Traveling with friends can also be a fantastic way to connect, no matter whether you are exploring a new city or going on an adventure. To be honest, regardless of who you travel with, the experience of sharing new adventures and making memories together will strengthen your relationships and create a bond that lasts a lifetime.

You Can Cross Off Your Travel Bucket List

We all have a travel bucket list, right? Whether it's swimming with sharks or hiking the Inca Trail, traveling is the perfect opportunity to make those dreams a reality. And the more you travel, the more places you want to visit. So, what are you waiting for? Start planning your next adventure!

There are countless reasons to travel, but one thing is for sure: it's a life-changing experience that should be at the top of your priority list. The benefits of traveling are endless – from expanding your horizons and enriching your experiences to bonding with loved ones.

So let's work together to plan a trip you'll treasure forever!

7 Tips for Flying Gluten-Free

I have to admit it, my least favorite part about traveling is flying. Getting to the airport on time, figuring out what to eat, etc., can all be stressful.

I travel internationally frequently (every other month) and there are a few things that I do to make my travel day less stressful. Below are my top tips for anyone flying that has celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity.

Tip #1 - Take Extra Gluten-free Snacks

Many airlines have eliminated meals and only provide them for long international flights. If you’re headed to the Caribbean or Mexico, expect to have drink service and pre-packaged snack options. However, you can’t guarantee that the snacks provided by your airline will be gluten-free.

You’ll need to pack your own gluten-free snacks (or even an entire meal). My favorite snacks to pack are Kind Bars, Chomp beef sticks, trail mix, gluten-free pretzels, etc.

Note the following:

  • Purchasing snacks at the airport - Most airports will have gluten-free snacks available to purchase, however, they will be much more expensive. Expect to pay 2-3 times the cost compared to purchasing snacks at your local grocery store.

  • Snacks provided by your airline - Do NOT rely on your airline to provide gluten-free food options (even if they say they’ll be available). Do NOT eat items provided by your airline unless they are packaged and labeled as gluten-free.

  • Pack more food than you think you’ll need - Make sure you have enough snacks in case your flight is delayed.

  • Packing fresh fruit - Do not take fresh fruit unless you plan to consume it on the plane. Some governments don’t allow travelers to bring fresh fruit or vegetables into their country because it could introduce a new pest or disease into the local environment.

  • Packing liquids - If you plan to pack any liquids in your carry-on, note the following:

    • All liquids in your carry-on must be in 3.4 oz containers or smaller and must all fit into a single clear quart size bag. Make sure it is accessible in case it needs to be checked.

    • Salad dressings, yogurt, etc. are considered liquids. You can purchase these in the airport once you are through security.

    • Most airports have water bottle filling stations. Bring an empty water bottle and fill it once you are through security.

  • Packing ice packs - You can take ice packs in your carry-on as long as they are frozen solid. Please note, you may need to bring your ice pack home in your checked luggage because you might not be able to refreeze it at your resort.

Most major airports will have gluten-free granola bars, candy, snacks, etc. available to purchase, but you’ll pay more for them at the airport. At this stand in Jamaica’s MBJ airport I purchased three candy bars and it cost $12 (2-3 times the cost at the grocery store).

Tip #2 - Check Your Airport's List of Restaurants Ahead of Time

Before you depart, determine if there will be restaurant options available for you at your airport and where they are located. However, I do NOT recommend trying new foods at the airport or eating at restaurants you aren’t familiar with. Being sick on a plane is a horrible feeling and isn’t worth the risk of trying a new food.

Tip #3 - Pack a Carry-on

Always take a carry-on with essentials needed for your first day. If your room isn’t ready, your resort will hold your luggage and you’ll be able to access items in your carry-on easy and enjoy the resort.

Always pack the following:

  • Prescription Medication

  • Hand Sanitizer / Sanitizing Wipes / Masks

  • Headphones

  • Valuable Jewelry

  • Eye Mask / Ear Plugs / Neck Pillow

  • Bathing Suit / Change of Clothes

  • Snacks (extra Gluten-free Snacks!!!)

  • Pen & Paper

  • Glasses / Sunglasses

  • Emergency Contact Info

  • Magazines / Books

Tip #4 - Arrive Early

TSA recommends getting to the airport 3 hours prior to departure for international flights and 2 hours prior to departure for domestic flights. Don’t start your trip by being stressed - get to the airport early!

A look back at that time I arrived at the airport and realized that all of the travel advisors I was traveling with also packed jean jackets. Lol!

Tip #5 - Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Getting TSA PreCheck and / or Global Entry can make your travel day much less stressful! It also means that you won’t have to take all of your liquid snacks out of your luggage and have them scanned separately.

TSA PreCheck - departures from US airports

  • If you fly frequently, I highly recommend getting TSA PreCheck, which is for departures from US airports. It allows you to have a shorter wait in security lines and you won’t need to remove your shoes, belt, laptop, liquids, and jacket.

  • To qualify, you must apply online and schedule an appointment at an enrollment center near you. The entire process is easy, however, appointments can be difficult to get and you might need to schedule a few months in advance. At your appointment they will take your fingerprints, scan your passport, etc. (take less than 5 minutes!).

  • Cost: $78 for 5 years

Global Entry - entering US airports from international flights

  • Global Entry provides a reduced wait time at Customs when entering the US from an international flight. It also includes TSA PreCheck and I highly recommend this for anyone that travels internationally.

  • To qualify, you must also apply online and schedule an appointment at an enrollment office.

  • Cost: $100 for 5 years and also includes TSA PreCheck

My pick - get Global Entry. For only $22 more you can get TSA PreCheck AND Global Entry.

Tip #6 - Reserve a Gluten-free Meal

This tip is only for those flying on a long international flight (800+ miles). Some airlines will still provide meals on these longer flights and you can request a gluten-free meal. Simply contact your airline immediately after booking to notify them, call again 48 hours prior to departure, and confirm again with a ticket agent at the airport. Once you receive your meal, confirm again that it is gluten-free.

Note, gluten-free meals are NOT guaranteed. Even if you request a meal and the airline says that they can provide one, do not assume you will get a gluten-free meal and always pack your own food just in case.

Personally, I don’t try new foods prior to or during a flight. To me, there isn’t anything worse than being sick on a plane. I recently even had a friend travel with a major airline, was given a meal labeled “gluten-free”, was glutened, and was sick during the first 24 hours of her trip. Not worth it to me!

Tip #7 - Flying Home

If you are departing from the the Caribbean or Mexico, know that many smaller airports don't have a lot of dining options. Don’t plan for your departure airport to have gluten-free hot meals available, but most will have snacks or candy.

ALWAYS plan to eat before you leave your resort and bring your own snacks. Some resorts will even pack you a meal to-go if you ask. Just make sure your to-go meal doesn’t exceed the amount of liquids allowed through security.

Although flying can be stressful for those with celiac disease or a gluten sensitivity, you can safely fly as long as you are prepared. I hope these tips will help you on future travels!

Why I’m Gluten-free

“Why are you gluten-free?”
It’s one of the questions I get asked all the time. And if you’re already gluten-free, you probably know—it’s usually not a choice.

For me, going gluten-free completely changed my life.

In 2018, I was diagnosed with pulmonary sarcoidosis, a rare inflammatory disease that affected my lungs. I was dealing with shortness of breath, constant fatigue, and a string of strange symptoms that would come and go without warning. I felt like my body was spiraling, and nothing was in my control.

My doctors recommended long-term prednisone, but something in me hesitated. I wasn’t ready to rely on medication without exploring other options. That’s when I began researching ways to reduce inflammation naturally. With the guidance of a functional medicine doctor, I started a strict elimination diet—cutting out gluten, sugar, caffeine, and alcohol and focusing only on whole foods.

It was hard.

When one of my doctors first suggested giving up gluten and switching to whole foods, I broke down in her office. I loved food—especially dining out, socializing, and savoring pizza, tacos, pasta, and pastries. Honestly, I couldn’t imagine my life without them.

But thankfully, that decision turned out to be life-changing.

Gradually, the granulomas in my lungs disappeared. My energy came back. I started to feel like me again. I never needed to take prednisone, and today, I’m considered in remission.

Over time, I’ve been able to reintroduce some things into my life (hello, coffee!), but I’ve stayed 100% gluten-free. I feel my best this way, and I can’t imagine ever going back.

Enjoying gluten-free Shrimp Fra Diavolo in Punta Cana!

Do I miss gluten?

Not really. I’ve found so many amazing substitutes that satisfy my cravings.

But what I do miss? Convenience. I miss being able to grab a slice of pizza or a soft pretzel when I’m on the go without thinking twice.

Why did I start Gluten-free Vacations?

When I first started eating gluten-free, I was self-conscious every time I ordered at a restaurant. I felt like a burden. That experience opened my eyes to how hard it can be to travel and eat out with dietary restrictions.

In 2021, I launched Gluten-free Vacations to help other gluten-free travelers. The good news? There are incredible resorts that truly understand gluten-free travel—and yes, they even have indulgent options that are safe and delicious.

About 95% of my clients have celiac disease, but I’m here to support anyone avoiding gluten or managing food allergies. If that’s you, you’re not alone—and I’m here to help you travel confidently, deliciously, and safely.

How I Visited 21 Resorts in Jamaica

Last week, I completed site inspections at 21 resorts throughout Jamaica. Yes, it was as crazy as it sounds! Over the course of 5 nights, I stayed at 4 different resorts and visited properties in Montego Bay, Negril, and Ocho Rios.

You might be wondering: What exactly are site inspections? What do I look for when I visit resorts? And what’s my schedule like during these trips? Let me take you behind the scenes to explain why site inspections are so important for travel advisors and, ultimately, for you—the traveler.

What are site inspections?

Site inspections are guided tours that allow travel advisors to visit resorts, explore their amenities, and meet with the management team. These visits are essential because they provide firsthand experience and insight that simply can’t be captured online.

For me, site inspections are all about ensuring that I can confidently recommend resorts to my clients based on their unique needs. They’re a crucial part of my job as a travel advisor.

Why are site inspections important?

Even the most luxurious resort can evolve over time. That’s why I revisit resorts, even those I’ve been to before, to check for updates, improvements, or changes.

When you’re investing in a vacation, you want confidence in the recommendation, whether it’s about the quality of the rooms, the dining experience, or the overall atmosphere. Site inspections help me ensure that every detail is up to par.

What do I look for on site inspections?

Here are some of the key factors I evaluate:

  • Cleanliness: This is a BIG one for me. I’ve found that resorts with excellent cleanliness standards are often better at accommodating dietary restrictions like celiac disease and food allergies.

  • Maintenance: Is the property well-kept? I check for ongoing upkeep like fresh paint, replaced furnishings, and well-maintained grounds. Photos online can sometimes be misleading.

  • Vibe: Each resort has its own atmosphere—some are perfect for a quiet retreat, while others cater to a lively crowd.

  • Staff: Especially when it comes to food and drink service, I assess how well-trained staff are in handling dietary restrictions.

  • Dining: I pay close attention to the variety and quality of dining options, including how they manage dietary needs.

  • Drinks: I always keep an eye out for gluten-free drink options like Tito’s vodka.

Taking a quick break in Negril. Love the crystal clear water!

Are site inspections like a vacation?

Not at all! While I get to visit beautiful properties, relaxing by the pool or beach is rare.

For example, on this trip, my days started at 6 AM to capture photos of the resort before guests were up and about. Then I’d spend the day touring multiple resorts, followed by dinner with my team or resort staff. By the time I returned to my room, it was time to catch up on emails for my clients.

Although these trips are demanding, I can’t complain. I love my job, and seeing the world beats sitting in an office in Maryland any day.

Do I rate resorts?

Absolutely—and I’m very selective.

Of the 21 resorts I visited in Jamaica, I would only recommend 7 for travelers with celiac disease, gluten sensitivities, or other food allergies. Cleanliness, staff training, and dining options are critical factors in determining whether a resort meets my standards.

Enjoying some time with my team! I am affiliated with Shoreline Destinations, which provides opportunities to do site inspections and I get to work with an incredible group of advisors.

Which resorts would I recommend?

It depends on your preferences and budget! Jamaica offers an incredible variety of resorts, from family-friendly options to boutique luxury retreats for couples. If you’re considering a trip to Jamaica, I’d love to help you find the perfect resort for your needs.

If you’re planning a vacation to Jamaica—or anywhere in the Caribbean—let me take the stress out of the planning process. I’ll help you choose the ideal resort for your dream getaway.
